Don't be pussy and start with 1.

You can literally start anywhere, although 7 is personally my least favorite, so I don't recommend starting there.
I just started with 1 on Android and played them chronologically from there. The mobile ports are really good (don't mind people bitching about MUH MOBILE CANCER). The ports of 4 5 and 6 are essentially the DS versions but with higher resolution and better audio.

I started with DQ Mondters, then years later played 8. Both really good entries i feel. While the older ones are still good, I feel like it's safer to start somewhere like 8 to really determine if you're into the series or not.

4, 5, 8 are pretty good starting points. I personally recommend 4 as its designed to get your feet wet slowly in the DQ formula

Either start with 1, and go chronologically, start with 4, and play 5 and 6 afterwards, or pick one from 7, 8 or 9.

There's so many places to start, it really does not matter.

4 or 8, take your pick. Doesn't matter which version or remake or whatever.

everyone who tells otherwise is a fucking idiot who need to kill himslsef right now.

VIII is easy to get started and the 3DS version has no ranDUMB encounters. However, if you want a legit DQ game you can't go wrong by starting with IV for the DS. Or IX, that one's really good too. Of course, if you own a GBA you can always start with the GBC ones, I and II were one one cart, III on another. They're called Dragon Warrior, though.

ragnar's chapter at the start of dq4 is the probably the simplest and most straightforward way of getting introduced to the series

desu while 9 is good in it's own right it's quite a bit different to other games in the series, partially due to how it was designed to be a psudo mmo

If you do start with 1, play the GBC version. The SNES version is uggo, and while I think the NES version has the best presentation out of the three, it's a grindfest like none other.
