The "tone" of his voice is a bit weird, but so is with most people in the japanese VA, but that's what makes them authentic.

I like Dunban's nip VA because I think it suits his personality better.
The English one sounds too much like the seasoned warrior who's calm and composed and is there to guide the young heroes.
That might sound like what Dunban is and that is indeed part of his character, but in reality he's also has a short temper at times and his even more passionate and impulsive than the other characters.

I think the japanese VA conveys this nuanced personality better.

Well, first of all that's irrelevant.
Even if his character isn't unique, the point is that the japanese VA delivers that character better.

But even then, I wouldn't say that's a defining characteristic of any other character.
I'd say Reyn is impatient and Sharla sometimes becomes desperate, but Dunban is impulsive according to his passion, like when he grabs the Monado in the intro, when he goes after the Emperror or when he fights Mumkar.

Imo, the japanese VA delivers those kinds of scenes better. That impulsive passion is just not there in the english version.
