I posted in the thread last night why I thought SH2 was a step down (I played them all in order for the first time last year/this year).

-less enemy variety
.smaller world map with less to explore and find
-opening area is waaaaaaaay too long and dull in SH2, which really sapped my enjoyment jumping in

By the time you are FINALLY finishing up the apartments in SH2, comparatively speaking in SH1 you will have explored the opening area of the town and discovered the keys, made your way into the school, and probably made your first trip into the otherworld, if not already beating the area and moving on to the next town section - Three distinct, memorable experiences that throw a lot of new sights, sounds, and plot at the player to unnerve them.

I really loved SH2 but it takes too long to really hit its stride, and even then it has a few unfortunate limitations (perhaps signs of a rushed development?) compared to the two games its sandwiched between.

>>381904040
A lot of posters here (myself included) are broken records about it, but yes. It's an awesome game, and best to go into it blind. It's personally my favorite of the four.

It's best to go in without spoilers, but all I will say is that important items and locations are easily missable if you don't explore the maps. They won't stop you from beating the game, but it might affect the ending you get. Go play it! It's a great game!

Silent Hill 2 is so good and it aged so well but the best way to play it is either on a PS2 or if you want HD then PCSX2. The PC version now has a shit ton of mods to fix some of the fuck ups but the PS2 version still the superior.

The PS2 version has superior fog effects, which is a deal breaker in a game where there's fog everywhere, and it's the only version where the CGI is encoded at 60fps which made the game feel more creepy. The PC/Remaster/Xbox version also have worse audio quality and pre-recorded music, so you'll gonna notice when the music ends and restarts.
>>
>>381904531
>>381905043
I understand your points, but i still think 2 is better simply because of the story and characters. James is the best protagonist in the series in my opinion.
The "leave" and "in water" endings gave me a lump in the throat. None of the other games managed to make me care like that.
I also liked how every enemy and location had a reason to exist instead of just being thrown in there because they look spooky. The prison is probably my favorite location in the series.

>>
Was origins really that bad? Is it worth a playthrough?
>>
>>381907193
The roads were blocked. I dont think he couldve avoided any locations.
There was no other way to reach the hotel unless he jumped into the water and tried to swim across the lake

I also think that SH2 is the best story of the original run of games. It's very well-told, filled with emotion and symbolism, and is an amazing ride start to finish.

I just think of the way the game is designed and feel like I would rather play SH1 or 3, which either offer more satisfying combat, maps, and locations. But when I want to replay SH2 it is solely to experience the story again.

>muh story canon but nobody cares
nah come on now.

The story in SH is half the fun, and the plot of origins is soooo lame. It's deflating to see characters like Dahlia dressed like some white-trash tramp, when your only reference to her is this mysterious, cryptic old lady dressed like a nun in SH1. Not to mention Dr. Kaufmann, a small-time crook in over his head, turns into a scientific mastermind badguy with eeevil poison gas booby traps.
>>
>>381909094
each to his own,I had a blast with the gameplay it simply felt like something SH needed it as a franchise.
>>
>>381908707
It's because Origins not only sucks but it only adds bullshit to the lore. If it added some cool stuff that preceded the events of SH1 and Alessa. If it was just some trucker experiencing some weird stuff and that the otherworld is ancient and existed way before Alessa's ritual, i would have no problems with it. The problem is that it attaches itself to SH1 in the worst way possible and keeps doing fan service for no reason instead of doing it's own thing and having original characters.

Homecoming has the Pyramid Head fanservice and rips a lot of stuff from the movie, but at least it takes place outside of Silent Hill.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Also give the new PGXP emulator a shot for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

This. SH1 > all the rest.

-Largest, most interesting and varied town sections.
-Best pacing out of the whole series; the slow beginning and Apartments in SH2 really grind people's gears.
-Great, varied major locations (School, hospital, sewers...)
-Better enemy and boss variation, all of 'em are fairly dangerous
-Nicely balanced difficulty, both action & puzzles.
-Scary as fuck, full of mindfuck parts as well
-Great visual design, full of small details.
-Awesome soundtrack and audiowork in general.

>>381910118

Man, of all the new SH downpour had the best chance to do something interesting and it totally fucked it up. After hating Origins and Homecoming I tried to be open minded with Downpour, and like in all honestly if someone put a gun to my head and said "You need to play a SH game after 3 or I will murder you." I would probably have to pick Downpour, but I still wouldn't be happy about it.
Shit just had so many wasted opportunities. You had a neat idea with using Murphy as the Cop's bogyman, which was a neat concept brought back from 2 with the people's different nightmare's blending. The problem is that is never worked out, you had guy who killed kids on accident, but it never goes into that, you had D.J. Black Guy, who it never goes into besides a fucking phone call from the town. And you have wheelchaircop, who, is he even in silent hill? Why is he there, did the town create him? Can girlcop see him? Oh right, THE GAME NEVER FUCKING TELLS YOU.

>>381914532
At least Homecoming tries to be Silent Hill, with an industrial otherworld and enemy design that looks grotesque. Downpour's monsters are literally pale crazy women, pale guys, Auschwitz prisoner, juggalos and gas mask man.

Not to mention the fact it turns Silent Hill into a literal purgatory where the people can never leave until they've paid their sins. Since when Silent Hill has been about paying for your sins? And If you don't pay for your sins you have to keep delivering mail for all eternity.

I think 1's town gets a lot of points for dogs and fucking pterodactyls chasing you around. There was a real sense of urgency to figure out where to go and get the fuck off the streets for most of the time. The rare enemies in the streets of SH2 also aren't very fast, meaning you can wander around pretty much unhindered and explore, which was obviously the intent as there's more to see. I think both of these designs has merit, and SH3 went yet another why by having nearly no time in the streets.

this is my least favorite thing about SH3. It felt like it was constantly shuttling you from one location to another, without any downtime to decompress.

This needs to be a pastebin and not a png. No, I'm not gonna do it.

>try to explore a little bit of the town
>Heather goes "oh i shouldn't be going this way"

SH3 is full linear. SH2's resort and rural areas are relatively small, but at least you could fully explore it and there were healthy drinks scattered in every corner.

>>381921164
I forgot about the text-boxes preventing you from exploring. That was pretty frustrating. I am not really sure why they felt the need to make everything so linear in SH3. I didn't mind it at first, but by the time you were exploring the second or so shopping/apartment complex with no real break in the action it got very fatiguing. The game needed more breathing room.

Pros:
Per pixel lighting flashlight beam just like the PC version. On the PS2 version the flashlight beam is blocky.
Dynamic lighting has soft shadows just like the PS2 version. PC lacks this.

Cons:
Fog is dramatically reduced just like in the PC version, but PC version has a mod that lets you have even more fog than the PS2 version.
Sound quality is inferior to the PS2 version, a little bit better than the PC version.
>>
>>381923579
for me, the sound quality might be the deciding factor, but honestly, all the differences are so minor that you aren't missing out with either version of the game.

Those silky smooth shadows in the Xbox version are pretty sexy though.

She was a teenager and probably trying to rebel against her pick up and go lifestyle in hiding. Kids don't typically take well to that kinda stuff so it's not unreasonable for her to be angsty. Harry wasn't a bad father, it's probably because he was such a good father but she didn't understand what was going on that she was so pent up and trying to find an identity for herself.

What's with all these Silent Hill threads lately? At least the spike in Resident Evil threads made sense, with RE7 and the movie coming out, but what provoked this? Not that I mind, of course.

>>381924331
Playing through it now, it's pretty great. It definitely has a bit of a Silent Hill-ish feel. There's an obscure local religion, it's heavily implied your in some fog world instead of the real world (characters often remark on places that "shouldn't be here"), and most puzzles are solved with mundane items. The similarities with Silent Hill pretty much end there, however.
There's an ability called sightjack in the game, which allows you to see through the eyes of enemies. Overall, the game is way more stealth-focused than Silent Hill. Also, instead of following the story of one person, you constantly bounce between 10 playable characters, as well as bouncing between different times (such as going from old guy in the morning to little girl last night). This kind of makes it pretty hard to follow the story, and overall it feels like there's more emphasis on the backstory than the main story. Also, unlike Silent Hill, as you bounce between characters you're given a mission and a pretty small map to explore. So you might run around half of a hospital before the mission ends and you're somewhere else. And since these maps are re-used quite a bit, they get kind of old after a while. Nearly every mission has a second mission to complete instead, but the requirements are usually pretty damn obscure, and due to the broken-up timeline it's hard to tell what you need to do to meet the requirements of the second mission.
Don't mean to make so many complaints, just want you to know what you're getting into. It's a pretty damn great game, and anyone who's into horror games will probably like it. Takes a little while to get used to, though.
>>
>>381924781
given how attached Heather is to Harry, it's hard to call him anything but #1 dad. Her room in her apartment says it all: cutesy, pink and cozy, with stuffed animals lining the wall. Her home (wherever it was) was her sanctuary.

It's a little minor detail, but I wasn't a fan of how Harry, as portrayed in SH3, had serious doubts and reservations about Heather - and even was tempted to kill her as a baby.. It just seems so out of character for him, especially after the touching (good) ending of SH1 where he runs from the collapsing otherworld with the baby.

I've always wanted to try out the other Team Silent games, like Silent and Shadow Memories (w/e it's called).

Is there a fix for the inferior PC sound?

video related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E5Nt8ahZRk
>>
>>381927665
WOW, it's fucking nothing.
>>
>>381927845
Clearly you are mad about something but rest assured I did not mean offense, I was merely curious if there were mods to replace the PC sounds with the PS2 ones because as show in that video, the PS2 version has the better sounds.
>>
>>381927985
I'm merely pointing out that the differences aren't significant. I'm sorry I hurt your fee-fees.
>>
>>381928154
>muh fee-fees

I think you need to get your ears checked.
>>
>>381928154
C'mon dude. No need to be a dick about it.

>>381927985
I think it's just down to programming. Since the game was programmed to play the sounds from a PS2, they probably had some extra audio manipulation going on that was entirely absent in the PC/Xbox release, which probably just plays the "raw" sounds or something. It doesn't make a huge difference unless you are looking for it, at least.
>>
>>381927665
>>381927985
Like said many times before, that video's both exaggerating and very biased. The difference is NOT that major when actually played, and without such stark side-by-side comparison, you would not realize the difference.
>>
>>381928572
Yeah, even though it probably doesn't make that much of a difference it wouldve been nice to mod that stuff into the PC version so the PC version has even more merit.
>>
>>381903224
Why fight when you are correct? 1 is the weakest of the original three games, and by a wide margin. Nostalgia is the only reason people rank it so high. Even in 1999 it wasn't scary.
>>
>>381928824
You're wrong on all statements.
SH1 is the strongest, most balanced and impressive game, and easily one of the scariest games out there.
>>
>>381928669
>exaggerating and very biased

He didn't link a Crowbcat video, shit turd. That is an honest comparison that shows the PC version is inferior in the sound design, deal with it. Small difference or no difference, it's all in the numbers, fuckwad. Just because you've been pissing and moaning about it "many times" doesn't unfuck the shitty sounds, pissant. God, I hate holier-than-thou shitters.

Horror is subjective, I guess, but playing SH1 for the first time a little over a year ago had plenty to make me freak out.

It's not just about jump-scares, or knowing that enemies are coming for you. It's a combination of mood, atmosphere, and in-game events designed to throw you off your guard. The opening of the game in the alleyway is scary because, if you are just starting, you don't know what is happening, you don't know if there's a way to defend yourself, and you will likely be panicking trying to find an exit while the enemies swarm you. Combine that with the eerie camera angles and POV shots that lead up to it, and you have a very tense encounter.

That's just one example, but SH1, outside of obvious loud noises at vulnerable moments, plays tricks with the player and that puts them on edge, if not outright scared. Since part of crafting horror is exploiting the fear of the unknown, SH1 does that pretty well, from the fog covering the town, hearing enemies before seeing them, and pulling the rug out from under their feet when they don't expect it.
>>
>>381907775

i enjoyed it. the mirrors was a neat trick. no where near as good as the others, but i'd say it's worth a play through. the puzzles were also fun.
>>
>>381929109
The audio experience depends on your sound hardware, your settings, your volume, etc. My game sounds nothing like that game in real life.

I actually own both PS2 and PC versions, and the difference absolutely ain't that big.

>>381929126
it's the scariest of them all and always was.
SM ain't scary, but it's a great game.

>>381907775
yes, it's horrible.
No, I wouldn't wish it to even my worst enemy.
>>
>>381929109
That video is bullshit nonetheless. It's comparing Vanilla SH2 PS2 vs Director's Cut SH2 PC. The PS2 Director's Cut has the same exact gunshot sounds as PC but in higher quality, while that video uses vanilla PS2 version to make the difference sound much bigger than it really is.

James's footsteps on the PS2 version produce too much echo by the way, it sounds like James is running inside an hangar even when outdoors.
>>
>>381930095
The mirror idea would be better in a different game unrelated to Silent Hill. Because in Silent Hill it doesn't make any sense.
>>
>>381931448
The games stopped caring about making sense after 3.
>>
>>381932364
You mean after 4.
Because just like in all past TS games, there was clear rules and evidence for EVERYTHING in SH4, and it even kinda fits the past games' set of rules too.

Why are PS3 collections so comfy? There's something cool about having 2-4 classic PS2 titles of he same franchise in one physical box.

I'm thinking of getting the Prince of Persia PS2 trilogy next, I own Jak 1-3, Sly 1-3, Ratchet 1-3, DMC 1-3, Metal Gear 2-PW, God of War 1-2 and God of War origins 1-2.

How's the Splinter Cell collection?
>>
the HD collection is ultimately offensive. but i own it, i waited in line when it came out, and it does have crisper lines and colors while maintaining the grain/noise effect. but why revoice? and FORCED new voices????? the person responsible for that should be shot. not to mention the *biggest offense* sign. but all that considered : i love putting the disc into my ps3 and seeing the HD SH background before booting. i remember when i got the HD collection and that menu decor made me feel happy.

Being the biggest fan nowadays equals actually thinking that it's a great idea to change a masterpiece. Rewrite dialog. Clean up textures. Hire amateur voice actors to do a piss poor job, not calling the original voice actors. Using an alpha version of the game as a base and only figuring that out months later and so on.

I hope the fuckhead killed himself.

are you fucking kidding me.

Shadow of the colossus is a disgrace. The whole game is fucked and the player character stumbles around like a fucking moron. It's almost unplayable and makes me rage.

What's worse is that the fuck heads at Sony though it would be a brilliant idea to make a Limited Edition for the Japs. But then not include the Japanese making of on the fucking 2 discs in Nippon. I guess there was not enough space on those discs left.

Nope, instead put those making of videos onto the US disc. And give Europe the middle finger aka digital download codes.

Or adding those stupid speed run trophies to Ico. Yeah, great idea.

Or what about removing developer commentary from Sly Cooper.

Or what about removing TONS of content from Metal Gear Solid 2+3 collection.

Or the ton of bugs in Prince Of Persia collection. Or 2 out of 3 games running like ass in the Splinter Cell collection. So you are literally paying for Chaos Theory HD.

Hitman collection was sorta fine though.

Most of those collections are hack and rush jobs.

For the Jak&Daxter collection they could have ugh idk, maybe fixed the broken as shit turret part in hero mode. But nope, can't be bothered.

It has problems but it also has some of the best art in the whole series and some of the spookiest moments, best soundtrack and 2nd best story as well. It's almost as a massive downgrade compared with MGS3 than what GTA IV was to San Andreas.

Sure, tons of videos, because gotta fill up dat blu-ray. But why bother with codec conversations? Tons of eastereggs? Tons of actual content? Nah. Also add stupid installations and then try to be funny saying that blu-ray is soooo advanced that you do not have to change discs anymore. Instead you now have to wait 5+ minutes for a single chapter to install.

The "game" was actually a big fuck you to MGS fans.

Go back to Shadow Moses - good idea
Execution however? Yeah put those fucking stupid tiny robots everywhere. Those are not annoying at all.
don't be consistent with the level design, because fuck the fans.
And then add a boss with terrible AI to the mix.

Silent Hill 4 is so good that it's my Mom's favorite game. Yes, she got out of her 40 year old mom-doings when it came out to play it. It fucking caught her for some reason. My dad played 1 through 3 only, in retrospect.

I tried installing the Fog fix, and it isn't complicated to do so I can't imagine I fucked it up, but my fog looks less thick than it does in this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iaOSAj2aC0

Do you think they changed the settings to make it thicker, or maybe they used an older version, or what? I don't think it was even that thick in the PS2 version (though it's hard to tell from videos because of the lower quality).

This user Nekorun found out that there are many different fog models and behaviors in the game. See if one of them matches the type of fog that you're talking about:

It was such a great way to tell the story, through the letters under the door, looking through holes in walls, checking the radio, etc. It feels different to all other SH games but fits in perfectly IMO.

Eh, I played the PS2 PAL version even.
Trust me, the piece of shit HD collection does not work like even the PAL version. NTSC was piss easy. PAL wasn't, but player character didn't act like a stupid retarded mongo all the time.

In the HD collection sometimes the monster doesn't even MOVE at all and the fucking moron still stumbles around.

If what you are saying was true, then the trophy percentages wouldn't be as bad as they are. Almost no one beat all the time trials. On PS2, even PAL, those weren't difficult at all. You simply had to know what to do. HD collection however, good fucking luck. I knew exactly what to do, and #3 or so took me hours to finally be lucky. I tried my PS2 tactic and it didn't work at all. I had to do some crazy shit, like jump directly to the belly, then be lucky to get a few stabs in. Then jump like a mad man onto his back. Pure RNG luck. No skill to be found.

btw. I actually got platinum on it. But the HD collection made me hate both Ico + SotC. Yorda wasn't meant for speedruns. Her AI wasn't meant to do that, but nope some moron thought it would be a great idea to add speedrun to a game, that wasn't designed for it.
>>
>>381946419

Agreed, but I'd be disappointed if it didn't. It was always great at not taking itself too seriously. I haven't played anything after origins but I'm guessing they lost an important balance there.

But I'm in the US and clearly remember it being sold separate. It was the Saga DVDs that were packed-in with certain preorders.

This.
I remind buying this game almost on a whim to try out this "resident evil" clone, little did I know what I was in for.

The game was a masterpiece, I loved how he managed to make scary again childhood fears (like the darkness) and how much more relatable the locales were, only added to that.

A school, a hospital a mall are much more reletable location as a teen than a huge ass mansion or a police precint (Unless you're a nigger)

I loved how in SH1 I thought the town was creepy at first, then I shat my pant when ti became dark and when I went to "otherworld" for the first time I was totally disturbed.

I still remember how elated I felt when after defeating the first boss, you could see that soft white light filtering from the windows, I was super happy it was foggy again. What a game.

Again it's sort of hard to tell because of the quality but mine most closely resembles the type at 1:04. Right now I'm at the beginning where you encounter the first monster, and the tunnel makes the difference between my game and the videos I linked most noticeable. Not a huge or anything, hence why I'm not even sure the fix isn't working, but mine seems a bit less full and in-the-foreground (obviously my screenshot's the one without the YT shit).

Play the fucking games, you fucking mongoloid.

Do you really want to say that Dark Souls is an easier game than Shadow of the Colossus? Because trophy percentages look like it is. Way more people have gotten platinum of DS than of SotC.

Do you fuckhead believe that GTA IV is literally the 3rd best game ever made? Did you buy the Silent Hill HD collection, because IGN said 9.5/10 or 10/10 or whatever the fuck the paid shills "rated" the turd? Because that's what gaming journalism does. They want you to buy games, that the publisher paid marketing dollars for. That's what they are there for.

Can you find any "journalist" complaining about for example the PS3 X/O problem? You know region free and all those lies. Can you find any "journalist" complaing about the expensive Ico + SotC Japanese versions missing out on content compared to the western releases? No? Well I am totally in shock.

The thing is that SH4 was produced alongside SH3, so all critical members were working on SH3.

Team Silent was already composed of Konami's leftovers, so SH4 was literally developed by leftovers of the leftovers. The end result is a weird game that turns into a escort mission halfway through and forces the player to backtrack every single level, the same exact levels with no changes or anything.

Also this:
fog_transparency_layer1 = 160 // original value 128;
fog_transparency_layer2 = 160 // original value 128;

fog_layer1_x1 = 0.750 // original value 0.125;
fog_layer1_x2 = 0.750 // original value 0.125;
