Is rain world any good ?

A friend of mine keeps babbling about how it is the greatest thing ever made.

Also pic related.
>>
>>381894549
Hollow knight is pretty good. I've heard rain world's got pretty frustrating balance when it comes to difficulty.
>>
>>381894549
Hollow Knight is just really damn solid all around. Combat, exploration, pacing - it's not the second coming of Christ or nothing, but it did stick an admirable landing in a glut of Metroid/Castlevania-clones.
>>
>>381894549
rain world is good, what people doesn't understand is the world is simulated, you're basically playing as an animal in the wild, you need to feed and run from other animals that want to feed on you, all creatures behave like actual animals, you need to outsmart them if you want to survive, but there are times when you can't do anything but die when you lure too many predators, but the atmosphere is great.
>>
Rain world is fucking terrible though. Watching long ass death animations over and over gets really irritating.
>>
Ori is great babby's first linear metroidvania.
>>
>>381895204
That doesn't sound fun at all.

Meta was never that good but it really has gone completely to shit now that we can get reviews from people who own the game.
>>
>>381894404
Wasn't this game hyped like five months ago r something? Didn't everyone here say it looked phenomenal?
>>
>>381895649
I was going to reply with "graphics can't carry a game" but then I forgot that's literally what Ori does.
>>
>>381895330
it's not, hence literally who status and garbage reviews, you have to be a contrarian to like it
>>
>>381894745
It does, the art and sound directions are amazing, the game itself is just made extra difficult so not a lot of casuals can learn it, still enjoyed it.
>>
As much as I do love Rainworld, Ori is a better game.
>>
>>381896034
Ori has a proper game design. Rain world is basically "here's your world, fuck you"
>>
>>381896540
>This game doesn't hold your hand therefore it's bad

>>
Ori is cute
>>
Fucking neo/v/ on display once again.
Rain World was a small student project turned passion project with a budget of a bag of cheetos.
They made something unique.

But keep comparing it to something it isn't that was made with by a staff and published by M$.
>>
>>381896034
Personally i thought Ori's art along with the music and story just came off as pretentious as fuck and brought the game down.
>>
>>381896034
>>381896540
Pretty much this. Ori and Rain World both have really great design, but Ori follows rather fundamental and already laid out game design that works, and makes the entire bullet hopping/pushing really dynamic. Rain World on the other hand gives you someone who already has awkward controls, and everything else is a threat that wants to kill you in some fashion or another, feeling like 'YWTBTG' at times of trial and error till you learn each little thing to watch out for and how to lure things so you can continue without dying yet again. It's 'new' gameplay with vexing controls that while once you learn it does offer an interesting experience, is far harder to get into and that road block can and will turn many away from it.
>>
>>381894549
Hollow knight is a damn good game that rewards exploration, meat boy level platforming and great bosses.

Only thing I have to complain about is more of a personal thing, which is that the contact damage is a little too unforgiving.

How the game was made and how many people worked on it doesn't matter one bit. The only thing I care about is if the game is good. I don't care if Big Rigs was coded in twenty minutes by a blind, one armed, illiterate monk. It's still a shitty game.
>>
>>381894404
I unironically enjoy Rain World more. The whole immersive world with wild animal enemies that will attack each other if hungry or threatened leads to some really unique moments if you decide to go full retard attract a lot of attention.
>>
>>381896837
Priced the same, judged the same.
That being said, I'm not making any judgements as I haven't played Rain World yet.
>>
>>381897558
That's idiotic.
If I make an asset flip in 10 minutes and throw it on Steam, you can put it in the same ballpark as a triple A? You'll judge them on the same values?

No, you can't. You take what the intent was and how it was made into account as well as the game's content itself.
>>
>>381895204
i would be fine with this if the controls werent garbage
game is a mess
>>
>>381898606
Retarded. You go by price, and both of them are $20.
>>
>>381894404
Nothing against Ori, but for impatient reviewers who'd rather "play" movies Rain World was just too hard and punishing for them.

It only occasionally RNG-fucks you, otherwise I was just fine at beating it.
>>
Literally who
>>
>>381894549
If you're patient enough to actually learn how to get around enemies, Rain World's a damn nice game that feels satisfying to beat. Great visuals and animations too.

You're gonna fucking hate the tentacle cysts though.
>>
>>381894404
>It's not fair
It's a good thing ratings don't matter when the content is enjoyable to you.
>>
>>381895330 >>381896075
Haven't played Rainworld but you guys sound like you just don't like survival games, which is fine, there's nothing wrong with being a casual.
>>

yes you have, that comment was the go to generic reply to anyone who critiqued this game in the threads this game got a while ago when it was released

Yes I fucking can. There are plenty of indie games with small teams I like way more than the biggest budget triple A games, just look at Risk of Rain, Undertale, and many others.

Theres a really good Jackie Chan quote that sums up what I mean, of course hes talking about movies bu the principle is the same.

https://youtu.be/Z1PCtIaM_GQ?t=8m16s Unfortunately the original interview source was taken down but the quote is here.
>>
>>381901685
Public reception does matter. People like something you like, you can expect a sequel which could improve on what you liked; people don't and nobody bothers making this type of the game again.
>>
>>381901912
Maybe it's the 'go to generic reply' because you guys don't even try to hide how casual you are?
I've only barely heard of Rainworld in passing, this thread is the most exposure I've had to it, but calling people contrarians for liking something that's clearly not for everyone makes you look like some scrub faggot that just blew in from reddit
>>
>>381894549
Hollow Knight is just overall a solid game with plenty of charm, if you enjoy Metroidvania-esque exploration and progression you'll probably enjoy it.
>>

I played the game after the patches, so I can probably attest that most of those reviews are justified in saying the game released like shit. The difficulty wasn't even some sort of Polygon-tier whining, but legitimate game ruining things like being locked inside of a dungeon for hours because you lost all of your karma due to a bug (or quitting the game) and tribal death squads spawning in just the wrong place every time you reloaded the game.

Game's actually pretty fun right now if you're not a complete retard who can't handle the controls.

The remaining five or so hours is solid gameplay with a total of maybe three little cutscenes at two minutes each

Also, if you don't mind me asking, what does Rain World have to do with MaZe?

i honestly only ever saw one thread up at a time; idk if the guy making them was one of the devs, but i don't think it's beyond possibility that it was just one turboautist that liked the game. people are so quick to cry shill, but like rain world had what, three people making it? it started off as one guy's experimenting with animation, and turned into an actual game. i really value passionate developers, and i think they're worth valuing. i was yammering on in a bunch of hollow knight threads, too, before it got popular. there are enough indie titles nowadays that a lot of good ones just get lost in the tide.

A contrarian is a person that takes up a contrary position, especially a position that is opposed to that of the majority.
>>
>>381894549
Rainworld had a lot of interesting ideas but a very poorly executed sense of progression. I get it, you're on an alien world and they want you to figure things out, but there's no way to know you're actually figuring anything out and so you'll eventually just resort to a guide to tell you what the fuck they want you to do because communicating with extremely vague pictures you see in a dream once is not how you inform the player they're making progress. Once you use a guide, the game is just a mediocre platformer.

Rainworld managed to capture a beautiful world while also making it absolutely brutal. Captured that childhood feeling that Abes Odyssey also had and quickly became one of my favorite games of this year. The audio design is also top-notch. Didnt play Ori because it didnt capture that downtrodden world feel.
Anyone who could get past at least Shoreline in Rainworld shouldnt really speak on it, until then the interactions with the world are fairly limited and your just headed in one direction
