Westerners created the style of RPG that Dragon Quest apes back in the early 80s, so nearly 40 years later they are less enthusiastic about playing the same type of game when so many already exist.

Never catched on with the western masses, while the few of its gaijin fans and all of Japan love the series for remaning consistent and mostly unchanging throughout its history the bigger western crowd wants the ever changing and cinematic stuff that pours out in the market, hence why Final Fantasy became a giant in the west, it tries to please to a larger crowd instead of DQ which remains faithful to its solid fanbase.

Dragon Quest is a garbage series that hasn't changed meaningfully since the first game, which was a shitty copy of western CRPGs made years before it. It is the most simplistic, braindead "RPG" I've ever seen. Why the fuck would we want to play a game with gameplay from the 80s? Just because all of the characters look like Dragon Ball characters?

The same goes for all of those dungeon crawlers. They're fucking copies of Wizardry 1-3 and haven't evolved at all. The actual Wizardry series evolved a whole fucking lot, Wiz8 in particular is phenomenal, yet all of these japanese spinoffs and me-too titles like Etrian Odyssey play just like shit I played when I was a kid.

Japan has its head up its ass with these "traditional" games.
Final Fantasy is more popular than DQ everywhere outside of Japan because it tries new shit with each game, its spinoffs are even more experimental, and even the shittiest FF is better than any DQ. I'd rather play Mystic Quest over any DQ.

I bought dragon quest builders to play it with my little cousin, he's 8. But in the second chapter they suddenly started talking about maggots carwling under their skin and then they started scratching it off. The game looks pretty child friendly and it wasn't very graphic but the language is pretty unfitting for the game. Especially later when they bring up prostitution or when everyone is depressed because mankind has almost gone extinct.

It's a fine game series, but it's all japan ever talks about as far as fantasy goes. Practically every fantasy game, anime, or tv series is just a derivative of the Dragon Quest story. It's just like the west and Tolkien.

Instead of one really good story you get over the course of the whole game, you get about a dozen smaller, kind of boring stories that never really lead anywhere and are full of cliches, with no real connection.
