In that particular example the left is overdesigned as shit and the right is simple but stylish

But that isn't to say that fantastical designs can't be good, the artist just needs to know when to stop drawing

Plus real life designs can get pretty kooky looking, pic related

Well, playable characters in games tend to be high-status so there's a lot of room for high degree of ornamentation in the armour and fancy fabrics worn over it while still maintaining historicity

I like both.

Generally though, fantasy wins most of the time for me since I like fantasy genre the most. There is just simply more to do in Fantasy games in general, and realistic games tend to over do it with the realism that it affects the fun, or it's buggy as hell and easily exploitable that it turns out strange.

>>381891864

If you have a flat surface on a helmet or piece of armor, you can absorb concussive force more easily and it's easier for pointed weapons to puncture. Most helmets except shit ones like the early crusader helms (that were eventually replaced) were domed for this reason, the points on the face serve a similar purpose. Imagine trying to puncture the face plate on that pointed helmet or getting a clean hit with a hammer or something. All your blows are going to be deflected off.

I suppose it helps at deflecting downward blows and on impact there's more space for the helmet to move down on its fabric cradle before skull contacts the metal.

But I guess it's also fashion to extent.

Nah Toby Capwell just switches armor like unerwear; he used to have a german gothic suit and sold it before getting a new suit of armor; the black/golden english armor is now in a private collection in south africa. Apparently the new owner had the black surface polished off in favor of the stereotypical shining white surface.
>>
I'm a big fan of historical and borderline realistic designs, but I also like the overexaggerated look of Darksiders 2 or WoW. I tend to hop between the extremes on this subject because it's seemed really hard for devs to pull off the middleground and stay interesting.

Fantasy with some amount of realistic aspect or at least taking into account how one would even wear it. Dark Souls 1 captures this perfectly, with armor sets that could be real but have enough personality to set them apart.
If its too realistic, for me at least, it tends to get boring. If its too fantasy, most designers don't know when to stop and end up visual messes. Lords of the Fallen comes to mind for overdesigning. Everything in that is so literally edgy that its ugly to look at. Give me an Artorias set or Elite armor any day.
Also good looking masks are instaboner for me.

also take a look at the armors displayed on this museum and notice how many of them have a bullet dent on the breastplate, that means the armoursmith that made them tested if it was bulletproof by firing on it

I don't think you would have enough ammunition to do anything yourself. That said if you could get to a king and show him the uzi and somehow manage to create ancient uzis for his army, then yes.
>>
>>381893314
Depends on the size of the battle. One goober with an uzi isn't going to spearhead a siege of Jerusalem.
>>
>>381893948

Ok, i admit i was wrong, but nowadays people who main handguns are either cops or low end criminals.

Does not change the fact that most guns will shit on armor, even if power armor was a thing, a 50. could still end it.
>>
>>381886882

Fantasy designs in fantasy settings and realistic designs in games with a historical setting.
I like bikini armors in JRPGs and a milanese plate armor would look a bit out of place.
Overall I prefer a mix between functional and fantasy; it needs to look like something you can put on (visible leather straps, pins or cords) and move around in (articulation; textured or animated; no pauldrons that look as if they have been cut out from a WW2 tank, only little clipping).

A good rifle will harm armour more than a handgun. Guns did contribute greatly to the decline in use of full plate.
>>
>>381893948
To my understanding modern smokeless powder allows substantially higher muzzle velocities than black powder does so breatplates capable of stopping balls from black powder handguns might not fare as well against modern firearms

But of course, the point you make is entirely valid, firearms didn't obsolete armour overnight

I dunno. I think the idea of power armours just doesn't work too well because of the cost attached to them. Even if they were thick enough to stand up to several bullets from an AK, they'd still get knocked out by a simple RPG, and what would they be doing that planes or tanks already can't? Making plate strong enough to withstand bullets isn't really the issue; it's how practical it is.

I might be misremembering but I think there's kevlar armor equivalents with ceramic because they're lighter and can spread out the damage better without it being fatal.
If you're in a tank, you might as well make it from the toughest material possible, mostly disregarding weight which can be countered with better and stronger engines. A human can only withstand so much weight/efficiency ratio.

Modern tanks tend to have composite armour (a combination of metal, ceramics, plastics and other materials). I looked at Wikipedia for Third Generation Main Battle tanks and the first ten tanks listed (I didn't bother looking further) all had composite armour such as Chobham armour.

Fantasy style for larger than life heroes, realistic style for organized military.

In most games, once your hero gets his strength past 10 or 50 or the usual average, they basically stop being human. It makes sense that they can run full sprint in heavy armor and swing a great sword with one hand.

I find DS armors design extremaly overrated, like is realy good if you compare to shit like WoW but seriously only 1 in 10 sets manage to look good, and saying that it is realistic and well desingned is a bit too much.
Just look at the Elite Knight set, the guy wear an high quality 16th century armet but cant afford a pair of gauntlets, wear some floating greaves like if it was 13th century, and cant afford a breastplate, Elite knight my ass.

Some women were famous for fighting besieging soldiers off, in the 100 years war a lot of french women were sainted for fighting off english soldiers (and dying) for instance. Also Saxon women were given 'weaving knives' which were long knives to protect the household with, usually against Danes. It happened but it wasn't effective, and they usually didn't have any kind of armour.

Realistic only if the game is attempting to be realistic. Considering people never even hunted bears with a broadsword, I don't understand LARP autists getting their crusty pillows in a not because someone is using fantasy armor and weapons on a dragon.

If you have a shield then your arm is already protected. The arm that needs extra protection is the one that's going to be exposed to the enemy i.e. your weapon arm.

But wasn't plate armour mostly useless? A longbow hit would kill one and go right through a knight. A longsword shot to the rib full swing. A spear.

I always thought plate armour and chain mail, or any variant was just there to give the soldiers confidence to engage and only mild protection.

most women historically did not fight period

there are some famous examples like Joan of arc but crucially they where killed. It was not the norm and was not a position you wanted your daughter to be in.

To illustrate the the siege of Constantinople in 1453 had less than 7000 men defending the walls women did not rise up to defend the city

The main motivator is usually their children an invader would be unlikely to indiscriminately kill unless you gave them reason such as oh lets say attacked them with kitchen knives.

its usual to appease an invader when in a position of weakness such as Rome paying off the Celts when their army was defeated in 390 BC.Fighting to the last and getting your women killed would spell doom for any people.
>>
>>381913681
I know its fiction but a particularly large sword, be it longsword or a zweihander would clearly cut through a full plate if given enough force no? OR at least crack a rib or two, long enough to keep bashing them to death.

>>
>>381913879
maybe some roid rage fucker could cut it but a normal person with a longsword, i doubt. not sure about a zwei. the force could fuck you up a bit or knock you down. people in heavy armor normally would have to be taken down first, grappled with for a bit and stabbed with a dagger or something between the plates
>>
>>381914428
Bulletproof vests aren't purely for show and can stop individual bullets. But take an automatic, shotgun or particularly strong piece of arms and it will tear through the armour. Motorcycle helmet can work but its not fully preventive if your body goes flying or crack your neck.

My logic isn't "Its completely, absolutely useless" but that they don' provide full on protection. I.e bulletproofs do not make you bulletproof, only bullet resistent. You are not entirely immune to small arms or military grade weaponry, you can take small pistol level shots and it still badly hurts you or cracks a rib.

It was poorly written but armour is useless in the sense "this will provide me with a slightly increased chance of survival of the norm" vs "I am completely immune to sword swings, spears and conventional weaponry".

I just like it when women have face-covering helmets on them.

The only thing that really reliably works against full plate is blunt weaponry to bash plates out of shape followed by piercing weaponry slipping between the bashed plates. However, blunt weapons capabe of providing that much directed force tended to be expensive and thus relatively rare. So yes, full plate harness was very effective.

I do not disagree, but there were examples of women fighting en masse. Russia/USSR is one of the examples. Women batallions were used both in WW1 and WW2 with varying degrees of success. Most women snipers in WW2 survived the war, actually.

Fantasy, but only if it's not ridiculous and full of pointless extra details. A good example of what I don't want is endgame armor for literally EVERY MMO; spikes, frills, sudden buzz saws coming out of your flaming shoulders, and so on. A good example of fantasy armor is the Nord armor from Skyrim's Dragonborn DLC; it's a good mix of fur and metal while not looking like some kid vomited and traced the shape to design a suit of armor.

The women batallions of WW1 were used by the provincial government of Russia to shame the men into fighting harder. They were practically useless on the battlefield as anything but a propaganda tool.

No idea how efficent the batallions of WW2 were though. Didn't they put women in tanks and planes too?

You can do both good, but there are too many cases where "realistic" seems to translate into "Extremely boring, under-detailed, and without actual thought into the design", and "Fantasy" translates to "Absolute full retard mess of overly thick plates and skulls and glowing runes etched into metal". If there is coherency in the design, it can be good. If the design is identifiable and visually pleasing, it can be good. If the design is at least somewhat practical when glanced at, it can be good.

I think the efficency of crossbows is grossly overrated. They're good mainly because a peasant soldier can pick one up and learn how to use it with ease whilst longbows required A LOT of practice to use them properly, let alone draw them properly. There are plenty videos of high-powered crossbows shooting at plate armour made the old way and the bolts just make a dent at best.

Most modern body armor is made of ceramics because its lighter than steel plates. However, ceramics break, and steel doesn't , which is why there's no reason to use it on tanks.

A full set of plate armour practically made you fucking immune to the peasant levy and their shitty weapons unless they wrestled you to the ground and stabbed you in your soft bits. The usefulness of plate and mail armour has been incredibly understated by all forms of media since forever. Sword won't pierce a plate armour piece, nor will an arrow from a longbow or a bolt from a crossbow. Shit was OP, man.

This.
If plate armor was as useless as films made them out to be, then they wouldn't have been in use for as long as they were in history.
Some European cavalry regiments were still using plate armor as late as the 1700s, and even into the Napoleonic era, though mostly for ceremonial and bling purposes.
>>
>>381919808
Semi-practical fantastical armor. That Lagia plate doesn't look TOO offensive, and since they aren't ever fighting other humans, they need the extra armor layering. Not to mention that aside from the waist...plates(?), it seems like it wouldn't even be all that heavy.

The napoleonic cuirassiers were used into the opening battles of World War 1, my man. They even dressed the way they did a hundred years earlier, breastplate and all.

I still think WW1 plate armor is fascinating.
It shows how inept the military leadership was at the time, that they even resorted to making clunky and heavy armor for infantry because they were so desperate to figure out how to counter the artillery barrages, which in turn lead to the clusterfuck that is trench warfare.
It was the whole 'its so crazy, it just might work' line of thinking.

>>381920402
To be honest, MH armor has no reason to waste its time on being overly realistic and practical. What is a body being covered by steel plate armor do when a 20-foot reptile dives into lava and pops out just to shoot you with a laser, or when a unicorn decides to pounce forward and shower you with lightning? After a certain point, it just has to be assumed that either the armor is strong enough to handle it, and thus all of the extra armor plating (which is always rather fair unless it's Duramboros or Uragaan armor) is necessary, or it's all aesthetic, in which case it can be as pretty and ceremonial as desired.

>even the most basic of handguns makes armor useless.
Depends on the gun, depends on the plate.
Following the popularization of firearms plate started becoming better and thicker.
To counter that, arquebuses became longer, better (which soon ended in muskets by the end of the 16th century), and powder was better manufactured and stored.
While plate remained in use during the 17th, its presence on the battlefield slowly dwindled.
And from there we all knows how this story ends

I do! Also, you learn a hell of a lot about how people fought back then just by wearing their clothes. I had a sallet and a bevor on one of the days (a full visor helm with a separate mouth guard piece like you see in "gothic" armour) and I could barely see shit out of it. Likewise, during one of the fights we did for demonstration, I had to throw it on really quick and didn't have a chance to buckle the chin strap. So when I made my first jerky movement, the whole helmet moved and left me blind.

So yeah, I don't know if the face protection is worth it.

Closer to realistic. If properly researched and designed it can look really good and appealing. If armor is more in the realm of very obviously raising the question of how it even moves/articulates and/or is obviously less good than just going nude in that particular situation due to foreseeable pain, injury and inconvenience to the wearer then I don't like it and fantasy tends to often include both of those (Though admittedly so does an attempt at realistic armor by someone who didn't do research and also can't design for shit). kingdom come deliverance is going to feature actual authentic european armor and the witcher had at least one or two cool armors. but yeah western fantasy usually looks very bland and lacks detail and I don´t know how else to say it "weight" dark souls armor really looked it had a long history to it.

I think the big thing is that european developers take what's mundane to us (ie, typical european armour) and then just make it more fantasy because they think the realistic option is boring. The japanese don't do this because european armour is already exotic as is for them.

My answer is why not both. As long as you have both realistic and fantasy style armors that are viable end game (and don't obviously clash) no one can really complain.

In a way, yes. Lords of the Fallen is a good example of "standard armor is boring, add spikes everywhere because it looks cool", not realizing that no one thinks its cool.
There's an interesting thing with Dark Souls that, for them, the european armor looks exotic while for us, their take on european armor looks exotic. So the game and its armor end up world wide successes because it appeals to everyone by not really belonging anywhere.
I've tried to design a few armor sets, just for fun, and as a European, I definitely see the trouble in it. Realistic just looks boring to me, while trying to take influences from a culture I've never belonged in, outside of whatever piece of media I get from there, ends up looking wrong.

Dark Souls is very much an example of viewing our own culture and history through the lens of a foreign culture. It's fantastic and provides some perspective we'd otherwise lose out on.

Pic related is amusingly close to some real life ceremonial armours (I think it might've been Chales V of Austria's), even if it strays a little bit into fantasy territory. It remains anchored in european symbolism.

No, in fact you weren't killing shit with a long bow most of the time other then peasants in leather and cloth unless you caught someone in the eyes or joins of his armor. You'd be better off trying to knock him out with those blunt arrows then holding him hostage with a dagger to the eye hole, You'd even make a lot of money this way.

>>381924262
I think like the other anon said, european armor is exotic to the japonese which is an immeditae appeal, which serves as a base for adding their own spin to it. WoW and LotF devs likely grew up on western media, where the comic book heroes tend to be powerhouses, towering over everyone else, so that mentality of bigger=stronger ends up with those designs. Just a thought but for me it feels like its the type of design the west makes when inspired by the west.
>>381924560
Exactly. I do love the very difficult to get balance they achieved with the series. Realistic in that you could imagine a real life armor like it, fantasy enough without going overboard and making it seem like it does belong to some other world.

What the fuck is "realistic" armor? Literally every conceivable nonsense fantasy armor you see can be found in some element of history. Look at this mess of an armor suit.
>Just fuck my peripherals up senpai
>Gigantic spaulders because style baby

>Almost entirely exposed arms because shields and protection are gay nigga lmao
>All of that flare and color beyond that

This entire design would fit perfectly in a Final Fantasy title, and you faggots would call it retarded weeaboo shit when it's a recreation of something that happened in real life. Literally the only time a fantasy armor is absolutely unrealistic is when it's that garbage overly segmented skull and spikes armor you see every WRPG demon having, or when it's shitty boobplate. There is so much variance in real life and "realistic" armor that it's ridiculous that this has even become such a widespread concern of so many people. Historical armor? Sure. Armor based on historical armor? Sure. "Realistic"? Fuck off.

This. Armor is actually really good to have over cloth for innumerable reasons beyond simply eating a bullet, but it's much, much easier to just make a firearm that can penetrate armor and field 50 times as many dudes as the guy who spent his fortune on full plate armor for small unit of knights he "trusts". Although full plate honestly would still be better to have than some cloth rags, it's just dramatically more expensive to produce and maintain than pantaloons and a hauberk.
>>381934784
He wore those antlers to make sure he would always be recognized on the frontlines, because technically nobody else wasted the time making gigantic antlers, so knowing who he was, and knowing how Samurai did war, they'd just listen to shouting orders, try to find the antlers in that direction, and take them.

>The point is that, if culture allowed, women could be drafted into armies and perform well too.

it wasn't culture, it was the sheer shortcomings of life.

child-rearing was orders of magnitude more dangerous, mantaining a steady population was difficult and horrible wars, pest, famine, disasters and other events made it worse, a kingdom or state could not under any circumstance call any of it's female subjects expendable.

People would complain about that unironically even if we weren't talking about video games you know.
Uneducated people that is.
Also I can't remember outrageous armors from my last RPG's but the japs are usually not the worst offenders

"There are never been female warriors in history" is incorrect

"Female warriors have been extremely rare in history is better" is correct.

I don't care, but it needs to have a cape, tabard, robe, or some kind of flowy bits.

For Honor has a Byzantine armor set for their Roman Centurion character that just came out.

Too bad despite being a Centurion he doesn't carry a shield, wears a cavalry mask, and acts like a gladiator.
But the basic version of the armor looks nice, they just ruin it with spikes and shit later as it gets "upgraded".
You can still wear the nice looking set though.

But, it's possible a religion or something simmilar that made women fight despite it being a semi-optimal idea could exist.

>But, it's possible a religion or something simmilar that made women fight despite it being a semi-optimal idea could exist.

it would have to prove to be an extremely fertile and overpopulated civilization either way, because once women die out, any conflict is reduced to tribalistic shit flinging between isolated settlements.

of course i love sexy fantasy women wouldn't change it for the world.
The problem is when fools like >>381937270 expect their fantasies to be supported in history and try to present this contrarian debunking nonsense as the norm.

Do you ever wonder what armor and weapons would look like if guns were never invented?
Because there is a clear progression that gets cut off in Medieval/Renaissance European warfare when gunpowder weapons finally come of age.
It would be interesting to see how formation/strategy/tactics eventually progress over time into some sort of pinnacle.

You wear a gambeson below the armor and some mail in certain places to protect gaps (doublets?)

Your severe butthurt leads you to make assumptions that aren't supported by the facts. Some of them are specifically mentioned to have outperformed the men. Many more were apparently treated as equals, at least insofar as the performance of their duties were concerned. Many also don't mention their relative performance.

as i recall the provisional government was disappointed in their performance and they were moved to the back lines. This was an unfortunate consequence of them being propaganda battalions.
