find a flaw
>>
I just reached Ape Escape 1 in my backlog actually, I'd say its biggest flaw is the camera. Also some of the controls feel like Mario Party minigame controls, but they're not annoying in practice.
>>
The first game had completely shit draw distance and terrible voice acting. The psp version at least fixes that but makes my ears bleed whenever Pike talks ever and there's some stupid typos and errors including one cutscene they completely forgot to redub for some reason.

It reminds me of why people always say Nintendo's shit is more polished.
>>
Double jumping is so pointless, they should've just given you one big jump. Also having to constantly use the hoop/copter is ridiculous and they should've just integrated that with the character's default movement kit

The names are changed in the American version but no effort is put into it. The PAL version had more fun with the monkey names despite keeping the Japanese names for the humans.

Voice acting is bad on both sides of the pond. The American dub has absolutely no consistent VAs between any games.

There isn't an Ape Escape 4.

Ape Escape 2 didn't do anything that exciting with the level design and is mostly an expansion of 1. At the same time? It's not really a negative. 1-3 are all consistently excellent games.

2 had Monkey Soccer which is the best

>Website pretending to be an official source of news about the series was never truly fact checked.
>One of the main characters was brought into a weird crossover to show what the series actually was, only to be one of the weakest characters and get a shitty looking model.
>A trailer for Puppeteer celebrarting the history of Japan Studio showed some of their games, with Ape Escape being only represented by the last game, which was the shitty PS Move title, rather than the first game, which might as well be the studio's first game ever.
>A true sequel was planned since the third game and 10 years later, it was the year of the monkey, making Sony do a little jab and AE, only to end the year with a reveal for a sequel to a series nobody likes.
>That planned fourth sequel fans keep asking for was dropped in favor for the shit spin off that was the last game in the series.

So, if anything, Ape Escape was incredibly "hidden" from these people.

It's annoying as hell getting forced out of a level after you've caught the specified amount of apes, even though you can easily catch more.

They're also very "shallow", they just kind of introduce a gimmick per level and then immediately drop it without ever requiring you to do something interesting with it beyond the basics.

Could a Pipo Monkey fall in love with a human?
>>
>>381889724
Uh.. yes
>>
Guess I'll list a couple of nitpicks I have about the games

AE1: voice acting isn't very good on either US or PAL, PS1 has very rare framedrops and some draw distance but that's standard fair for the 5th gen game looks great graphically though, kind of steep learning curve and could possibly turn people off I guess, boss battles (except the Specter fights) don't feel like legit boss battles

AE2: the 3 new gadgets feel kind of situational and don't feel fleshed out enough in comparison to the other gadgets, robo pipochi moves a bit too slow, backtracking in the later levels for monkeys can go on a bit longer than they should, level themes could be more creative, no easy way to buy health or ammo for slingback shooter

AE3: transformations (while cool) can make some parts easier than they should have, not a rock solid 60/50fps (if PAL) like AE2 was 100% of the time but in exchange has some more added graphical effects

It needs it's own "N-Sane Trilogy" (all 3 games fully remade and bundled together) so it can make a comeback before they make a proper AE4 I imagine. I'm glad it's happened for Crash, so maybe it'll happen for Spyro and Ape Escape at some point.

That's wrong though, the swimming, bosses and frame rate all improved and some minor AI tweaks to the pipo monkeys in how they look and act. Also 3 is composed by Terada and I guess the camera isn't the best but the center camera button makes it a non issue most of the time.

>The friends whom I try to recommend the game to that say it's bad just because it controls different

Not him but my problem with 2 was there were just too many gadgets, which is fine except half of them didn't get used very often, like the watergun or banana-bait.

I think they could have fixed this by having some of the other gadgets act as weapons or just combining their roles into less gadgets. the transformations in 3 did this (sort of) an I think it made for a more enjoyable game.

Also having Spike playable once you've 100 percented the game feels fucking pointless to me. 2's still a fun game, but I feel it's the weakest out of the 3.

Hmm yeah it is the weakest if I try to look at it with no bias I actually played it for the first time last year via emulation since I only grew up with 1 and 3 but it did at least set the bar for 3 to improve on even more also I don't recall having to 100% the game unless you mean just catching all the monkeys because in that case yeah he shouldn't have been locked behind that.

Bosses are shit in the second game. Final levels are fucking terrible, too much use of the magnet, which is just waiting and waiting and waiting for platforms to line up. Also the game doesn't control as well as I remember. You're very slow and jumping has no momentum. Did you know you can do a long jump by pressing both shoulder buttons at the same time?
>>
>>381893768
He really did, when he was revealed I was hype as fuck but then the game was kinda lackluster overall. I think enough time has passed that just a new next-gen coat of paint would suffice. Although if you're talking new mechanic-wise, I'm sure someone's thought of something new during this 10 year development hell process AE4 seems to have undergone.

>>
>>381909304
I didn't really think the PS Move game's story was canon. (or it was an just alternate universe) they gave Specter a completely different backstory and everything.

I need to go back and play that. Hopefully it wasn't as bad as I remember...
>>

I know Million Monkeys might be a different timeline, but i still like the idea of a game that combine all the games, even if it ruins the continuity of Ape Escape.

>>
>>381909716
Pumped & Primed and Million Monkeys didn't exactly ruin the continuity, they were just spin-offs. I remember them actually acknowledging the events of AE2 in there.

P&P had various fan letters from monkeys in AE2, plus Red and Pink Monkey from the FM5 as assists.

Nothing directly storywise, but take that how you will
>>

It came out a year after AE3, but it doesn't reference it in any way. Probably because development times were too close together.

I just look at it as P&P sequel. Same gameplay mechanics, characters, and art style.
>>
I wish they kept making them in Japan. Ape Escape is so straight forward, you don't need a translation I played through Million Monkeys and beat it without a guide. That game was fucking weird.

...that's what I meant, Anon.
>>
>>381894005
Game may have sucked, but it was fun playing with Spike and seeing them use a lot of the gadgets.
>>
>>381944929
At least that meant they had better knowledge of the series than Sony themselves
>>

Unless game proportions are a design choice, she should be at least 12 or 13.
>>
>>381945071
I thought those proportions were intended
>>
>>381943507
I'd say that's kinda cheating

Is much of the original AE dev team still at Japan Studio? Might well be the reason the franchise is dead; it's got no one actually batting for it internally anymore.

>MCMICHAEL claimed this post was a joke
>>
>>381946278
That's an excellent question actually. No clue.
>>
>>381946278
I thought Ape Escape as a series was poorly managed, where Yoshida snorted a lot of coke and looked up to the Rabbids for inspiration.
>>
>>381946278
There was that twitter pic of the team taken on a restaurant, i think.
>>
>>381946717
Rabbids were a thing in late 06...
>>
>>381946830
That was taken in like late 2015 iirc
>>
>>381946278
I think Mark Cerny has most of them under captivity working on Knack 2.
>>
>>381948418
Fuck Cerny.
>>
>>381948418
Japan Studio has like 600 employees.

Man I remember how much of a boner I had as a kid for her. She really did things for my dick even though she barely appeared and didn't have a character

>Ape Escape 1
Camera

>Ape Escape 2
Bananarang
Movement
Protagonist
That hoop thing is unreliable on slopes
Some of the hidden monkeys are in absolute bullshit spots. Fuck those two in that Egyptian level
The jumping
The RC-car is slippery
The story is shit
Lackluster music for most levels
That fucking dispenser machine with collectables

>Ape Escape 3
Never played it.

What's wrong with Jimmy/Hikaru?
>>
>>381952912

What isn't wrong with him? The closest he was to actually being likeable was his friendship with that little monkey.
>>
>>381952912
Yeah I gotta agree with >>381953168

Jimmy is pretty much the Ash Ketchum of Ape Escape They even have the same VA
>>
>>381953168
Eh he might be clumsy kid but he means well, any idea on when you're going to play AE3 or no?
>>
>>381953714

When they finally release it on the PSN Store for PS4
>>
>>381953820
Blame Konami for that taking so long.
It has that MGS minigame in it.
>>
>>381954005
It doesn't take 2 years just to remove some side minigame.
>>
>>381955770
Then what do you think the hold up is?
>>
>Sony
>>
>>381955770
they can't remove it unless they remake it.
