Why did VR fail, /v/? Cost? Not enough games?
btw. I kind of like running around with it.
>>
an 800 dollar price point tacked on to the price of a computer that is VR ready (~1300 bucks) and than on top of that theres really no games worth the price
>>
Hardly any games.
I stopped being in denial and tossed my PSVR in the closet a few weeks ago.

I'll start using it again when Superhot VR comes out though.
>>
>>381876892
It's an impossible sell. You can't show someone what VR is like unless they've got the damn thing on their head. You can't take the output and just broadcast it to people because it looks like any vidya now only a bit off. You can't hire actors to smile and laugh and pretend to bowl like it was the wii. The wii did well because the consumer could look at a family playing wii sports on tv and think, "Yeah, that could be our family." Nobody is going to look at some asshole flailing around with a bucket strapped to their face and want to be them.
>>
>>381876892
Because it's a gimmick.
>>
>>381876892
Why the fuck is the ceiling so low in that room?
>>
>Requires a PS4 or expensive PC
>The VR itself is expensive
>Needs a large room size
>Almost no games
>The games they do have are shit
>>
It hasn't yet
>>
Because the devs weren't willing to make porn apps for them. Making waifus real was literally the only reason anybody even donated to the damn VR kickstarters, but then the guys who were running the show sold the whole con to the likes of Zuckerberg and Sony and made a shitload of money in exchange for optimism and hope: destroyed.

>>381876892
It hasn't failed, but it will be a slowly growing market for the first few generations until it's affordable enough.

What it did fail is to live up to the extreme hype people came up with
>>
>>381876892
No good content = why buy a headset
Not enough headsets = why go out and build content

we're still in the early days, nobody's gone all-in on a big killer app for VR and the marketplace is super fragmented, and on top of that a bunch of autists thought it was going to be the coming of the fucking singularity and got butthurt they couldn't ascend into the matrix
>>
>>381876892
who is this? what is this?

?????

It's stupid gimmicky bullshit

It didn't have anything going for it. It was banking on the idea that things would be more "immersive" but the simple fact is that most of the games were nothing more than walking simulators, shit horror games, or a "touch everything in the room" kind of game. People have realized, or will realize very soon, that playing a game with a controller in hand and on a screen that isn't attached to your eyes makes for a much more enjoyable experience than the awkward experience that is having a VR machine attached to your dumb head. It's expensive as hell, has no good games, and is inherently nowhere near as fun as playing games in the traditional way.

So essentially, >>381878965 is on the mark. It's just a shitty fad.

if you're going to post a smug anime girl i'm just going to skip your post or sage it. i don't even know what your post is about, but if i read it i wouldn't be able to take you seriously.
>>
>>381877978
A killer app isn't even possible. You can do niche games well, like racing or flight sims that have you in a cockpit or first person dungeon crawlers with grid movement. You can't do the kind of game that'll sell millions. RE7 had to gimp itself in VR to not make you throw up. Other retards are trying to have you stare at your feet or hands as you move. There is no system seller without WASD and there's no WASD.
>>
>>381876892
It is essentially a gimmick.

I have a Vive relegated to dust collecting. There is no motivation to play with this concept. It's not about the games or the technology, even if you solved those two problems the idea is not attractive beyond the first few days.
>>
>>381879806

>>
>>381876892
Cost. Then games, no one wants to invest into making any because the audience is too small.
I hope it will take on in some years, when VR sets should get cheaper

Remember when they said tablets were a gimmick?
>>
>>381876892
I would have to pay 800 dollars to use it on one or two flight sims, and I still don't know if I'll get sick or not.
>>
It's not a failure, but it's certainly priced out of the normie market for the time being, even the PSVR, so it's going to be kept afloat for the next few years by early adopters until the next iteration, where the tech will be improved (higher resolution, wireless, etc), and it will likely be cheaper. It's one of those experiences where even a rushed store demo doesn't do it justice, and the only people jumping on right now are those with a disposable income, and a willingness to take a chance.

I've got Oculus and PSVR, and I've yet to demo it to anyone who wasn't blown away, but "I wish I could afford it" was the unanimous conclusion they all came to. Personally, I love it. At its best (horror, racing, cockpit sims, shooters), it's fucking amazing.
>>
It's still too inconvenient, there's many people who would have never touched a game if it wasn't capable on their phones. You think you're gonna get the masses with overpriced headsets to be connected to expensive PC rigs with all those wires and shits? Also there's no games.
>>
No vidya, too expensive, high spec barrier for entry.
>>
>>381879920
Except for that part where none of that is true anymore. Vive has trackpads and Rift has analog controls on their motion controllers, PSVR can be played with a dualshock controller. All the 'safety' options in RE7 can be turned off. Farpoint on PSVR plays like a regular FPS with the left stick doing forward/back and strafe, and in its options you can enable camera rotation with the right stick.

I mean that's really cool that you read some stuff about VR from like four years ago but it's not relevant anymore.
>>
Lack of good VR porn
>>
>>381881518
Why are you talking about the types of controls when the problem is how those control commands are translated into the game? Does turning off RE7 safety options change enemy movement? Does it allow them to flank you, forcing you to turn your head or do they still move toward or away from you only? Shit is still fucked. It will never be unfucked.

Why did you post a normal picture on Reddit but strip down to your underwear on /v/? That's kind of gay.
>>
>>381876892
>VR failed
things don't become true just because you post them a lot

Oculus Rift CV1 could be considered a failure, but only because they had insanely high over-expectations (seriously believed they would sell tens of millions of units in the first year, and would be able to use that install base to launch a viable Steam competitor). Every other commercial venture in VR so far has been an unqualified success, and there are only ever more and more new future ones being announced.

Second-generation HMDs will 4k per eye and natively wireless. They will be viable monitor replacements. This is what will knock VR adoption into a cellphone-like curve.
>>
>>381876892
Casuals don't understand it, they get sick from it, and no good games came from it so there's no market appeal.
>>
>>381879920
>selling millions
>there arent even a million high end HMDs out there

okay man
>>
>>381876892

It failed because everybody who straps all that shit to their face and flails around looks like a fuckin retard. Plain and simple.
>>
>>381877318
Nintendo was also smart to pack-in Wii sports with every Wii to get everyone, even Grandma, to play something easy to enjoy themselves.
>>
>>381880313

Yeah they are. I don't know anyone with an Android tablet. Everyone has an iPad though cause Apple sheeple.
>>
>>381883395
>Second-generation HMDs will 4k per eye and natively wireless.
Good luck with having high enough wireless broadband and graphical power for that.
>>
>>381876892
Few games support it, that's bad enough.
The reason I'm not into the craze is because it's too expensive, as I've found a few games that I'd like to play with it. I don't remember what it's called but there's this really neat looking space dog-fighting game that I'd give 40 dollars for if I could play it in VR.
>>
>>381880313
Tablets didn't need to be wired to a high end PC and had the basic uses of a computer without the heft of the laptop and better portability.

VR still needs to get over the hurdle of price and having some games/programs that are must haves that will get people into it.
>>
>>381881804
>>381877557
Porn is the only reason why people would actually buy a VR headset.

Even then it's over priced
>>
>>381885698

>Checks out vrgirlz

It's finally happening bros. Soon our expensive mantlepieces will be worth it and all our wizard friends will be jealous.
>>
To be honest VR just needs more games like the star trek game or other games where it is all about doing things with your friends.
VR is second to none when it comes to gestures and body language.
Those are going to be the best games.

Also i would love for a Persona waifu type game in VR. I can only see that as bringing the atmosphere across even better than before.
>>
>>381876892
but it's still growing every year
>>
>>381876892
Why is that guy so big? His head almost hit the ceiling. That's proportion is really weird. Also that mask makes the whole scene looks like a 2008 movie.
>>
The problem with VR is controls.

My prediction is that it won't take off until we have some kind of control option where we just use our minds or something
>>
>>381885358
It probably* won't be possible to drive full 8K high-fidelity 3D experiences for a long while, but the point is to make HMDs viable monitor replacements. Virtual monitors aren't terribly resource-intensive (they're not insignificant, either, but won't be a barrier in this case), especially ones implemented by the OS itself (which is coming to both Windows and SteamOS).

Wireless is not a problem. Misapprehending this was probably the #1 failing of the first-gen VR HMD manufacturers (if they had know just how quickly it would possible to get wireless going they would have just done it). High-frequency wifi is a well withered technology that has just been waiting for the right use-case, which VR happens to fit PERFECTLY. The current wireless adapters being shown off at all the trade shows are specifically targeting 8K@120hz@<5ms - because this is what the next-gen HMDs will be. It can be made to go higher still.

*There are major advancements coming in the next-gen game engines (idTech 6 and Source 2) which actually might make it so (voxels, adaptive quality, foveated rendering, etc.). For VR specifically, where 'full' resolution (max fidelity) isn't necessarily required so long as the right elements in the screen/world are.
>>
>>381876892
>big guy
>mask
Is this?
Dare I say it????
>>
>>381876892
I expect high quality experiences for something that would cost me like 2 to 3 consoles, if it doesn't have any worthy games, then I'm not gonna buy it. I've been doing fine with traditional porn for years, I can wait a little longer until these things become trending.
>>
>>381876892
>>381881896
T-there wouldn't happen to be a THIRD picture, would there?
>>
Well I for one as a fellow gamer can't wait to buy fallout 4 vr (pre-orders available at your local retailer) and skyrim vr which is psvr first as they payed us-urh *cough* I mean Bethesda a lot of money. In fact I'm going to preorder right now! let's see how much we can pre order guys.
>>
>>381881896
So is this a cute submissive fuccboi of this big guy >>381876892 ?
I wonder how big is oppics dick haha
>>
I want to take off his shorts and give him a good sucking while he's busy in the VR world
>>
>>381876892
post the next one fag
>>
>>381876892
Someone should photoshop a wife getting fucked by a nigger on that couch while loser hubby is playing games like a manchildren.
>>
>>381880313
I remember when they said 3DTVs were a gimmick too.
>>
I have not tried either VR sets yet. But I just want something that let's me be the characters eyes and see what they see without staring at a TV screen the whole time. THAT'S IT!

I'm not sure why these things are "failing" according to what certain groups on the internet are saying. But all of these glorified standalone "VR demos" that are being released are probably what is pushing this thing back from selling good. Just give us the option for VR on the mainstream games that are all out.
>>
VR will be cool if omnidirectional treadmills become something viable for a consumer to own.
