Sales of each game are following a linear trend downward from PSP titles with temporary increases for each new numbered game. Japanese make up a minimum of half of all sales for any title that eventually sees localization and the japanese predominantly play games on portables or handhelds. Western sales have been steadily increasing but I doubt the non-japanese market has enough interest in monster hunter for the game to recoup its budget (which is clearly much more than any prior monster hunter).

Seeing a game in a store that has a big fat sequel number slapped on it would make people who've never played the series before be less interested in buying it. Calling it "Monster Hunter World" makes it feel fresh and new and will help encourage interest in it from this new western audience that Capcom are hoping for while old western fans will already buy the game anyway. The hope in Japan is that the nip monhun fans will buy more PS4s to play World, which is why Sony payed Capcom to make it PS4 exclusive in Japan so they can make a big push.

It's honestly a coin flip whether or not this strategy will actually work or not and I see it mainly depending on how well uninitiated western gamers respond to World as it's own individual game, rather than as a part of the MH series conversely, in Japan it will depend on how desperate Japanese MH fans are to play the new MH game, enough to buy PS4s.

So basically, to succeed, World will need to strike a perfect balance between being a good part of the MH series and being a good game completely separate from the MH series. If it works, it will make a crazy amount of money for Capcom and Sony, if it doesn't work, it'll probably make a small amount of money for Capcom and no money for Sony.

Luma has input redirection now? I haven't actually done any CFW updates in a while, been lazy about the b9s bullshit, everything works as it is so why go fucking it up.

I'm using InputRedirection for NTR, the accompanying PC client, and a wifi hotspot run through Windows which is sharing an internet connection with the 3DS so it's a direct link for minimum input lag. To guarantee a particular connection is used on the 3DS you just add a '1' to the SSID of whichever connection you're not currently using so it's unfindable.

Overall it works well, but of course it's still on that tiny shitty 3DS screen so it's still not great and you need to have a good place to prop the 3DS up against so you can see both screens. There's no noticable input lag or anything. I tried using 'kitkat' to stream the video output to my PC as well but it looks like garbage and runs poorly. Not worth it.

The series might have began it's life as a PS2 title, but there is definitely a reason as to why the series main focus shifted to the PSP and later 3DS titles. With the way the quest system worked, it was super easy/fun to bang out a few quick hunts on your way too and from work. Or in my case specifically, it was Uni, but still. It was a big part of the appeal for me.

Monster Hunter doesn't have "western" appeal. Souls games only appeal to the west because "you will die" and it was compared to Skyrim nonstop. Everything was compared to Skyrim for some fucking reason (Farcry, Borderlands). Word of mouth, review scores, and aesthetic contributed as well.

The new changes aren't going to magically have new customers praising mechanics they never knew about. Most gamers have never heard of Monster Hunter. The word monster isn't even a good description of what you fight, and has odd connotations (probably why Pokemon is a word). So these changes aren't to draw in a crowd, but to ease the introductory hours of the game (which can be 50+). It's slightly more accessible.

The games were fine and perfectly playable on the 3DS, hell 4U is arguably one of the best Monster Hunter games out there period and it's 3DS (240p) exclusive.

The game being 1080p 60fps (which it won't even be unless you play the PC version) won't drastically alter the gameplay. And much like those people who will turn down the settings in order to get optimal framerates, I'd rather not bother with cutting edge graphics if it means playing the game in the way I think it's best enjoyed.

Be it on the PSP, 3DS, on the Vita even though it never actually happened, or the Switch when I eventually get one.

It's cool that there's a Monster Hunter on Console/PC, and I'll get it on the PC when it comes out, but to dismiss the lack of any kind of portable incarnation as console wars shitposting instead of a legitimate criticism of a game in a series that has reach high levels of popularity for being availabile on portable platforms? Statuses like sleep or paralyze have obvious funky uses, but blast is just an invisible gauge that eventually does a chunk of damage. That is objectively untrue though. They added damage numbers, being able to move while healing and cancel out of the animation, a bigger emphasis on environmental hazards to damage the monster, the ability to change armor sets mid hunt, fast travel, and a whole bunch of other things in the name of streamlining the game and making it easier for newcomers.
