Let's take a review by Ebert on 2001 and see if we can think of a video game
>“2001: A Space Odyssey'' is in many respects a silent film. There are few conversations that could not be handled with title cards
>“2001: A Space Odyssey'' is not about a goal but about a quest, a need
>nor does it ask us to identify with Dave Bowman or any other character
I would say the Original Legend of Zelda

There was an alien race which liked to nurture intelligent sparks throughout the universe. They had a singularity in which they went from organic lifeforms to cybernetic ones, basically living space ships, and eventually evolved beyond the boundaries of a physical form and a limited lifespan.

None of this is explored in any of the movies. Kubrik even took a narrative line about aliens out of the movie in between an early screening and the final cut.
>>
>>381876089
>taking the meaning of the book and applying it to the movie
Kubrick's movie is not to be interpreted the same way the book is. While Kubrick and Clarke worked really closely to produce this, their visions were different. Clarke's vision is more about technology, Kubrick's is about growing out of our dependence on technology.
>>
>>381876393
The original screenplay Kubrik was working off of literally said that the monolith was left by aliens, and it made it all the way through production into film screenings.

>Kubrick's is about growing out of our dependence on technology
By sending an amalgamation of the most advanced technology the human race has available to it into outer space to investigate an anomoly? And the mission was a success despite all the bumps along the way?
>>
>>381876623
Have you forgotten about the scene in which Bowman literally destroys the most advanced tool humans ever developed?
Or when he returns to Earth as a newborn being deprived of technology?

Why is sci-fi so shit in videogames? Most of the time it has been done right was with more sci-fantasy stuff like Xenogears or Nier, but pure good sci-fi is so rare. Deus Ex is a good example, but Soma is just about the only recent one I can think of.

Someone on Youtube went over the movie frame by frame, scene by scene and realized that the layout made zero sense. A trip to the Kubrick Archives and look at the blueprints confirmed it.

Funny enough, it was brought to his attention by a modder who did the Overlook in Duke Nukem 3D and realized an exact recreation was nearly impossible due to the layout.

Metal Gear IV. It has some extraterrestrial and AI elements.
But, more importantly, Dark Souls, unironically. It has some themes about religion, human importance and a humanity centered vision, the fact that we as humans put all our hope in God. It's an antithesis. While Darks Souls is based on God, sunlight, and the hardness of escaping from the dark (Plato's cave), Space Odyssey is about evolution and the importance of the will power of humans. The fact that we are NOT guided by "The Gay Science".
I would say that there is no videogame like that movie, but Dark Souls is the exact opposite of it.

>>
>>381878303
Because he took the monolith thing literally. Dead Space had the Marker, and Xenosaga (and Gears) had Zohar. The Xeno games do have some similarities to 2001 and other Clarke books though.
>>
The movie starts off introducing the concept of the monolith, then introducing a new monolith, then at the end, the payoff for all the monolith bullshit was that it turned David Bowman into a giant space baby. Like that's supposed to have some meaning. The whole basis for the movie was all for nothing. There was no payoff. It's meaningless. The only good part was the bit en-route to Jupiter where HAL went crazy and killed everything, and even THAT made little sense. He had 0 reason to kill the hibernating crew. If he just killed Poole and Bowman that would have made perfect sense, but if he had the "greatest enthusiasm confidence in the mission", then why did he jeopardize it even slightly by killing the mission-relevant crew? It just doesn't add up. I know he could perform the mission without any crew, but that's still no basis to kill all of them. The sequel's explanation just exacerbated this by pointing out that the murder spree he went on was caused by a conflict between his desire to be honest with the crew and his obligation to keep the mission secret from Poole and Bowman. The other crew knew about the mission, and thus didn't need to be killed. And then on top of that, everything with HAL was completely tangential to what was going on with the monolith. They could have made it some cool shit where the monolith was targetting this new machine consciousness and uplifting it, just like it did with the monkeys in the beginning, but instead they just kill him.

I'd say Half Life
>First game with a meaningful story but no cutscenes
>First game where the gun slinging badass is a nerd
>Gman is one of the first NPCs in gaming who is neither friend nor foe
>Stellar graphics for the time, which are still serviceable 18 years later (after the development of HD in tv and games)
>AI thats not retarded and actually uses tactics like all attacking at once and flanking
>Variety of weapons all of which has a situation to be used, compared to other games where the gun you get 70% of the way through the game is the only one you use for the rest of the game
>Pioneer of the quiet soundtrack, ie 85% silence with music only coming on during important parts
>PACING. It takes about 10-15 minutes before things get fucked. You can see what normal life is like. Also downtime between fighting is very well handled. Puzzle / exploration segments never feel too long either.
>Reluctant protagonist, rare for the time (im assuming this one, maybe Gordon secretly loves killing marines and aliens)
