What momentum? it's not even selling particularly well, it's well behind Wii in Japan in the same timeframe, Nintendo probably had a hit on their hands, it's easily the best machine of the generation since it has some actual value inherently over say a PC something no other systems has, but Nintendo's inability to manufacture to keep up with demand will inevitably kill the system, especially moving into christmas. Also Nintendo will probably think that maybe third parties will support their system and give them some gaps to fill, which they won't which will cause gaps, then it will fade fast, end of life sales, better than WiiU, less than Gamecube, best first party lineup of the generation with ease.

It's not so much momentum as the Wii U sucking so hard Nintendo used the gale force to power another launch.

Kind of like how Overwatch is merely an OK class based shooter but people still flocked to it because they wanted a proper successor to TF2 really, really badly.

The Switch is clearly focusing on multiplayer, which makes sense considering Nintendo's fusing their handheld and home console lines, but it needs more strong single player experience. At any rate, no smash no buy.
