There's no way to defend it. In Persona 4 it was really easy to tell who you were casting healing and buff spells on because their portrait would light up. Now with the larger personas that are visible as long as the menu is open and crowded ambushes you have to be extremely careful to make sure you're aiming at the person you think you are.
