Two things you're probably missing:
Anticipating enemy attacks from here you either dodge or parry.
Making sure you are always on a advantageous positioning meaning you're not either surrounded or enemies are behind you. Also try to remember to replenish energy by zandatsu and most importantly Stop mashing that attack button and parry holy shit
