I don't understand how it got 150 million. At the time it happened it wasn't on my radar at all.

There appears to be a huge crowd of space autists in existence. It's the only reason why a game like Eve Online could exist or why No Man's Sky got so much fucking hype over obvious nothing.
>>
why do people fund things that don't even have demos to let you try them.
>>
>>381856973
Because the Tim Schafur trash was hyped up by his lot of sjw libshit nu-male cuck video game bloggers aka "journalists" who never played anything in their lives outside of Halo but like to tout themselves as experts.
Meanwhile actual gamers didn't need to be constantly shilled and reminded by Fagtaku and Polygender that a new space sim is being made by the guy who pioneered space sims.

The potential of the idea is what makes people throw their money at it. "You can do anything!" is actually true just for a moment because anything is possible with an incomplete game, the development has the possibility of going anywhere.

That's why people buy into promises, the early versions of minecraft, Early Access games on steam, Kickstarter, No Man's Sky. An open-ended idea is what sells. A fully explained/fleshed-out idea does not.

Apparently they did this as a way to actually save money, and they only put Squadron 42 up for collateral, not Star Citizen.

Either way, I hope they underprovide and the denial army that supports them get BTFO. literally every for of opposition this game gets receives thousands of angry redditors and backers. There's something fishy going on at CIG.
>>

> literally every for of opposition this game gets receives thousands of angry redditors and backers.

what is /v/'s problem with not realizing that their views are one-sided
you know what you get whenever you post something about star citizen? a bunch of people who love it and a bunch of people who hate it because you all have stupid opinions
there's nothing fishy
humans are just fucking stupid, like you
>>
>>381859624

Here's what's going on, lemme break it down:

People on /v/ hate preorder baiting and kickstarter because it's contributing to the growing problem of massive companies spending 10x as much on marketing as they do on development and trying to bait people into buying the game before anyone's played it and before they can see gameplay footage/get an idea of whether it's good or in line with their desires. This is seen as a problem because it's becoming profitable to release barebones games that are barely alpha quality to the public to just barely avoid being charged with fraud after asking 60 bucks for it by saying on kickstarter "spend this much and you'll get early access when it's ready ;)"

Now the people who come from off site to defend this game to the hilt are here because they've been fleeced but don't want to admit it. Many of them have contributed up to or more than 500 dollars over the last few years. Many of the ship packs on sale cost literally 10,000 real world dollars, why do they cost that much? Because there are people who actually buy them. These people have thrown copious amounts of money at a pipe dream and every time you tell them they're not going to get their perfect space simulation, and even if they do, everyone's spent so much time playing the pre-release content that it's going to be DOA anyway they get extremely angry.

Chris Roberts would go down as being a bigger con artist than Todd and Molyneux. Maybe someone should've told him to calm his fucking feature creep down and just make the damn Wing Commander: Privateer game which he was being crowdfunded to do. Instead he was trying to weld together cutting-edge grafix and No Man's Sky and Elite: Dangerous and a generic spees murine FPS game where you would have to actually lead spees murines into fully-to-scale space ships to capture them and haul them to port to hock them for millions of space creds...jesus christ. It's like he was trying to make half a dozen games and pack them into a petabyte-sized game.

I like kickstarter as an idea, a way for game designers with good idea but no cash to get the money together to make a game from the people who would buy it.

I hate it in practice because there's no incentive to take the time to release a good, functional game. Why would they? They've already sold thousands on up of copies and made millions of dollars for a game that doesn't even exist yet. They could half-ass it, release a buggy barely finished product and not give two shits because they already made their money.

That said, the only games I've backed on Kickstart are Shovel Knight, Undertale, and Hollow Knight. Almost supported Yooka-Laylee, but dodged a fucking bullet on that one.
>>
>>381855753
how the fuck has no one filed a suit to just dismantle the whole fucking thing or at least give refunds? it's the biggest waste of money ever and nobody is going to get their digital fucking spaceships for tens of thousands of dollars. they were never going to. star citizen is a fucking scam

>>
>>381862109
That's the beauty of Kickstarter. Companies go bankrupt all the time. There's nothing illegal about that. As long as Roberts can funnel their money out of the company in a seemingly legitimate fashion, they are untouchable.
>>
>>381856973
>I don't understand how it got 150 million. At the time it happened it wasn't on my radar at all.

This. The only reason I donated to it was because I didn't think they'd get close to their actual goal and would actually need my money. Had I known they were going to make tons of money and lose focus I could have saved my $30 bucks and bought some beers.

>>
>>381862007
The whole feature creep thing is what really gets me. It's amazing that Star Citizen fans are so delusional that they think that Roberts can really hit all of their stretch goals as long as they throw enough money at him.
If they actually intended to make a proper game they would have said "Alright folks. No more stretch goals after [whatever] million. If you wish to keep donating, we appreciate it, but we can't promise anything else."
Instead they just hoover up all the cash and blow smoke up everyone's ass.
>>
>>381862148
>except for wanting to continue in the industry
It might just be me, but if I asked for $6mill to make a game and ended up with literally 25 times that amount, I'd probably just spend the bare minimum on making the game. Maybe 10 millions just to make it nice(and for nice, even numbers to satisfy my autism) and better than what was expected.

After that, just pay whatever I owe people, then just disappear off the face of the earth. Barring some massive fuck ups, I have $140 million or so. I would never have to work a day in my life ever again. I could just live off the interest and live more than comfortably. If you have that much money, working for a living is a sucker's play.

There is still a chance that La-Mulana 2 and Pathologic remake turn out to be good. If that's the case I will buy them, but only when they are finished and released will they get my money.

hey

this might be of interest to those who actually come on /v/ to discuss videogames

We have noticed the speculations created by a posting on the website of UK’s Company House with respect to Coutt’s security for our UK Tax Rebate advance, and we would like to provide you with the following insight to help prevent some of the misinformation we have seen.

Our UK companies are entitled to a Government Game tax credit rebate which we earn every month on the Squadron 42 development. These rebates are payable by the UK Government in the fall of the next following year when we file our tax returns. Foundry 42 and its parent company Cloud Imperium Games UK Ltd. have elected to partner with Coutts, a highly regarded, very selective, and specialized UK banking institution, to obtain a regular advance against this rebate, which will allow us to avoid converting unnecessarily other currencies into GBP. We obviously incur a significant part of our expenditures in GBP while our collections are mostly in USD and EUR. Given today's low interest rates versus the ongoing and uncertain currency fluctuations, this is simply a smart money management move, which we implemented upon recommendation of our financial advisors.

The collateral granted in connection with this discounting loan is absolutely standard and pertains to our UK operation only, which develops Squadron 42. As a careful review of the security will show and contrary to some irresponsible and misleading reports, the collateral specifically excludes “Star Citizen.” [...]

This should clarify the matter. Thank you.

I feel pretty bad for people who still have full faith in Star Citizen.

Chris Roberts really appears to be horrible at project management. Yeah, delays happen in software development but missing every single one of your milestones and failing to overcome foundational technical hurdles 5 years into a project is not a good sign.

The original Star Marine shitshow getting blamed on the contractor was one of the first warning signs.

I think they figured with the $150 million they could do a proper game development scheme with a legitimate corporate style office, salaried developers etc. But that can spiral out of control quickly.

Now there's obviously a ton of NEETs on here who have never actually been in an office before and therefore criticise the wrong things. For instance they have an expensive coffee maker. Any firm engaging in creative activity will have that and it's not a problem to spend money on.

This is literally damage control. What they are saying is they are getting a loan because GBP is cheaper now. That's absolutely insane.

It is also not standard banking procedure to give all your assets in a loan except you know, when you have no assets to begin with like Star Citizen.

Also stupid enough to say that this is only Squadron42 and the whole is not affected. If they forfeit that part of Star Citizen, do you Cult fans not realize the whole Star Citizen game will be affected? That loan even includes ALL ASSETS. Including your ships, logos and more.

Derek smart made battle cruiser 3000AD. Basically a 90s version of the modern SC/No mans sky/spore debacle. How is translating an existing game (Visual Novel no less) considered an achievement over developing something from scratch?
>>
>>381884098
>Go ask the autists playing. Both these games are shit at the moment.

Wait, are you saying star citizen has been released??
>>
>>381883604
These are the people that were sci-fi fans their entire life, living for nothing except the dream to travel the stars. They lived through the 60s and 70s dreaming of the white polished glass cities of tomorrow and now have to accept the fact that they will stay in their shitty woodden houses but with internet-phones. The money they spend is more to convince them that what they do is worth it, if not their entire existence would be a cruel joke.
>>
>>381884164
It's not an achievement but you have only yourself to blame for investing in a Kickstarter that you don't know will succeed.

Haven't seen that name in ages. He has shipped the large majority of his vidya projects despite their lack of high profile.
>>
Wait, this game still isn't finished? Holy shit.
>>
>>381884361
Exactly. And even if it succeeds there's still a chance of failure. Look at the Ouya and that laughable thing called the Coolest Cooler.
>>
>>381884164
Codex is actually unique since it adds a lot of new stuff to Integral Works and Integral Works wasn't yet translated. Same goes for Photon Melodies and Flowers which is translated from scratch.

>with the $150 million they could do a proper game development scheme
No, what they thought they could do was simply expand the project. Not once. Not twice. Not even three times. How many times was it? I actually lost count. While the scope of the project was already large, it became gigantic afterwards. Which I don't think they'd be able to complete it in 10 years if they paid on average every employee 50k and that's be very generous on how low they'd get paid. That's a different argument though

>90s version of the modern SC/No mans sky/spore debacle
It wasn't even that, the actual build Take2 pressed to CD was an unplayable alpha. I know since I mistakenly bought a copy from a computer fair for 8 bux before realizing my mistake. There was a largely reasonable looking manual and a game where most of the functions did nothing.

If you think modern day publishers are bad, the ones of the 90's were even skeezier and more incompetent than what we see today.

At least it did come out. And did receive some pretty ok content patches. Star Citizen keeps getting pushed back, keeps running out of money. Has lost most of their good devs that have walked out over time while Chris Roberts was seen having a more and more lavish lifestyle.

It would be mind boggling if he did have one. Like, he just ignored everything else for a fucking coffee maker.
Also I love it when companies do lifetime repairs.

>>
>>381881010
This game was announced in 2011. There was a rough alpha footage floating around that time. Revisionism is one weapon of the SC cultists. Even if you say 2012, it is still not 4.

>mmo development time is 7
MMOs, not empty space battle simulator have deep thorough planning even before someone write a line of code. It would take months just to flesh lore out and more months for storyline, design and more. Don''t compare those to Star Citizen with most work relegated to GIVING YOU MORE SHIPS TO BUY.

Star Citizen today is literally an arena shooter with hangar mode. SC cults don't know that there is a lot of these in fucking smartphones today and those are not buggy messes with really short development time compared to SC that is not even out yet.

Confirmed for no longer in development.
They're just getting whatever money is left out of it and bailing, leaving bank with 'project' that's absolutely nothing.
