Fad? You mean japan's marketing tactic of using sparkly semi erotic bishoujou characters to sell mediocre games to its market well beyond what would otherwise be thwireless allotted share? Wait for the generational change overy in a few more years time to see what happens. Just because this tactic worked wonders on the lost generation of NEETS borne around 1998-2002 isn't necessarily going to work on the next probably much smaller one with different influences and experiences. If Japan births another generation of NEETs which would be a trick since the current one didn't even have many kids then it's problems will be much bigger than its shit media sector

I just wish that "fad" came with good gameplay and interesting stories. Sadly not the case with neo Gust

>sparkly semi-erotic bishoujo characters as a successful primary selling point was born when late 90s kids came of fapping age

Japan doesn't give a shit about those things and hasn't for a while. All you need to sell a game in that market anymore is some popular character designer to draw a bunch of cute girls in skimpy fetish clothing and possibly some popular brands. Ironic Weeb people on twitter help export this approach as viable abroad more now too if not to the comical extent Japan is beholden to bishoujou characters. It's not like they have anybody capable of writing a strong game scenario these days anyway. When I consider Persona 5s whole Youth Stronk narrative (a kick Japanese otaku oriented stuff has been on for years now) a highlight just because it feels like somebody tried to have some interesting and coherent themes and developments it says a lot.
