Start the character in a HUB world, let them pick stages, after you beat a stage you find a piece of armor, like a chestplate, some boots, gloves, etc. Each of those changes up your punches, kicks, and gives you some kinda passive effect, once you get get the last piece, the helmet, the armor changes you into some kinda beast-themed armor set, think Kamen Rider. Each level portal would have a symbol above it telling you what helmet you get if you enter it with the rest of the armor pieces.

Different beasts would have different abilities, so there'd like, be a scorpion form that gives you an extra set of arms and changes your punches into ATATATATATATATATATATATAT shit and you can fire a scorpion stinger to hookshot dudes.
The wolf would come back with the ability to throw fireballs and RIDER KICK and shit.

Having the game set up like this would mean you could replay it a few times and get different forms depending on the order you beat levels. After beating the game with each form once you get the ability to go through the game with a Gilius Thunderhead form, compete with axe and dwarf shoulder tackle.

For gameplay, rip off Maximo with flavors of DMC.
Limited transformations that can be freely accessed once unlocked, if you fill up a gauge.
Have it set in Ancient Rome, keep the style of the original in tact.
Make the tone campy and silly, but it takes itself seriously. No supporting character should be jokey or light, they take their world and its problems very seriously.
Make the Centurion a noble warrior, and a pretty serious guy. Over the course of the game he becomes increasingly unhinged and unhinged, making him more fun as the game progresses
In the end, turn him into a statue. At some point, that statue's right hand breaks off. That the statue eventually ends up in some cheesy resort in Miami, 1977. The statue turns back into a man, and that man has a breakdown seeing the strange world he's landed in, there's the sequel hook. In the next game, the evils of Ancient Roman mythology are returning to the world. Give The Centurion a robotic gauntlet that transforms into different mechanical contraptions for his different transformations. Make it groovy.
