Brexit. The pound will be better off in a year's time once people stop shitting themselves in fear, ergo it's better to borrow now.

>>381810085
KOA was flatout funded by RI from the start. Not comparable.

>>381810224
All they pledged was the office + shit in it, which is standard.
>>
>>381810323
no, it isn't, but hey whatever keeps you donating
>>
>>381810085
They took a loan from Coutts, a very very rich private invite-only bank, as an advance on a tax rebate they'll get next year because they need GBP specifically and converting their warchest of USD and EUR to GBP is a financially risky move. Because Coutts isn't dumb they want collateral, in this case their assets except for Star Citizen

When they get the rebate they can pay off the loan and nothing will happen, and they're guaranteed to get the rebate unless somehow the entirety of the UK defaults.

>>
>>381810916
Exactly. The rebate will be in GBP as well as it comes from the UK government so they will be able to pay the loan with it without having to worry about currency fluctuation. Financially it's a much safer move than exchanging USD or EUR for GBP at the moment.

Some tax preparers do a similar thing for their clients where they pay the client a portion of the refund to have up front but instead the preparer takes the full actual refund whenever it gets issued later so the idea isn't without precedent.

I do not know how many employees they have, but if you're going to say that a 13k coffee machine is a valid expenditure, then give a number that implies it's making 10,000 cups a day, I'd like to know how many people its serving.

Exactly the point. The whole collateral deal isnt as much of a way to earn back the loan if not paid but more of a way to ensure that it is paid. Something doesnt have to have money value to be useful as collateral as it just has to be important to whoever is getting the loan.

The worth of the code they made is literally $0 to the bank as its not sell able and means nothing to them. Its worth an assload of money to CIG though.

Sure because other corporations care deeply about their clients and backers.

You want me to explain ? Chris Roberts had the mad dream that he will create a game that change the Space Sim. He made crazy promises but got a lot and success and now they're working on it and showing us weekly everything they do to give us a freaking amazing game.

So yeah, we put money in it and we hope it will become a reality. Maybe it will fail, maybe they will be tears, maybe some guys who put some hilarious amount of money in this will go on a crazy killing rampage but we have the hope it will works. What is your problem with that ? Do you want the gaming industry to not ever change ?
>>
>>381817038

>>381818639
Yeah or the other four studios.
>>
>>381817820
To expand more, with corporate clients, if you think they are ok you would go clean on short term advances like this. No guarantees needed.

If you really think there is a problem, you can request receivables as guarantees so everything they make will go to ammortizing the payments first and what is left goes to the company. This is how you work with problematic corporate clients and people in general (when payments are deducted from your account automatically when you receive your salary).

When you start to request real collateral like the studio for a tax rebate, you are basically telling that you do not believe the company will survive long enough for you to get paid or you are subordinated to other creditors on the receivables flow. The bank is basically telling that they looked at the company's finances and think they won't be around when the tax rebate is going to drip in their account.
>>
>highly regarded bank
Oh yeah. Nothing at all suspicious about taking out a loan, using all assets as collateral, with a bank that's been investigated for enabling money laundering multiple times.
>Loan for a rebate
That's an odd financial move. And wholly unnecessary, the paperwork, man hours and interest on the loan would cost more than any potential saving. And you can bet if this loan is as short term as they're implying the bank demanded a high interest rate.
Either there's something dodgy going on or they just got Payday loaned by this bank, in which case they're dumb as hell.
>>
>>381818561
>Sure because other corporations care deeply about their clients and backers.

They don't, but what do other companies doing or not doing matter?

>to give us a freaking amazing game.

Getting cash on hand now based on expected tax rebates in the future does make sense financially. However, getting a collateralized loan to raise more capital to fund the project that desperately needs more cash could also be a reasonable explanation. The best way to figure out which is which, is by figuring out the actual size of the loan? Does anyone know this?

>>381826794
I've been following Star Citizen for a long time now. I'm $1,000 deep in it and I don't regret it. I'll be honest with you: Even trying to answer that question is stupid.

This game's development has been a pitched battle of trying to turn raw cash flow into a triple A game studio and quality game while simultaneously attempting to force CryEngine to do what they want it to do. This has manifested in weird as fuck ways. For example, things that we never thought would be possible in the game engine are now quite possible like the Planet Tech some german software wizard worked up. Unfortunately all of this means the development schedule is a clusterfuck and nothing is ever on time, as best case scenario the game needs time to expand based on the new tech that gets put into it.

Then, on top of that, you've got the fact that the game's actual development is iterative and a final release date is as meaningless. Actual release will be a quiet footnote and legal technicality when it arrives, especially since Squadron 42 and Star Citizen are now considered separate titles.
>>
>>381829382
>he should have spent that money making a game

The thing you missing is that it's not what we can play with that matters, it what we will be able to play with when this will be finished.

Yeah it takes time, way more than we would have prefer, but could you prople stop acting like 12yo the night before christmas ? We're talking about a game where you could go from space to a mining station on a planet without a loading screen. It recquires new way of programing. They're working really hard on it and you're just here complaining how much of a scam it is because you don't have a clue how economy works (neither do I, I'll admit it).

If you don't want to spend money on a game that isn't ready, fine. It's a safer choice after all, but don't bash their work.

2. Pay out "investors" and "shareholders" (read: CR, Ortwin, Elms bros, etc) with loan money
3. Default on the loan, dumping the shit sack of steaming nothingness that is Star Citizen on a bank
4. Peace right the fuck out.

I mean, it's genius really. And not even close to the kind of fraud that bankers got away with in the 2008 financial crisis.

No it is a we don't want to convert money from USD/EUR to GBP as the conversion fees are higher than bank loan interest rates so let us get a loan at a low interest rate and put up the government rebate we are going to get as collateral and get money right away.

GBP currency is fluctuating quite a bit. They have no idea if it's going to go up or down one month to the next.

Foundry 42 the studio with the most employees operates in the UK because of the 25% tax rebate the UK government offers to game dev companies to operate there. This leaves them having to convert USD and EUR where the majority of the backers live to GBP to pay the bills there.

Because of GBP fluctuations and conversion fees, they decided to get a loan as the interest rate was cheaper than conversion fees they normally pay. When they get their rebate they pay that back to the bank.
