I would say it actually is the rise in internet fanart. There always has been some but it's gotten a LOT more widespread this past console generation and it's having a large impact on their image.

While not a negative in and of itself, it also means they feel the need to tone it down for western releases, hence the also recent increased awareness of censorship.

Not all of them have been, but the argument can go in circles too easily since anything (should say everything) of any degree can be perceived to be sexualized even if that's not their intended purpose. Along with that though not inherently bad in itself, fanart creates an idea in people exposed to a lot of the art, but not enough of the game itself. That's why some people will see some Nintendo females like the Mario women to be more sexual than they actually are. Two case examples of this happened here alone. The first example is where someone waifu'd Palutena from Kid Icarus and started to get mad at people when they described her actual character in the game versus what the fanart led him to believe she was like. He got torn apart every which way for that. Though not Nintendo, the second example is with Nier Automata and 2B. Even if you haven't played it, you may have seen a large plethora of 2B fanart focusing on her ass. Though it corresponds with how she is designed in the game, people got upset when they went out to buy and play Nier Automata based on the fanart, but learned that you don't play as 2B for the fair majority of the game. I don't think fanart is bad on its own, but it can cause people to think differently than how they should if they're not careful.
