It's alright if you want that nostalgic gen 2 experience but it shits the bed REALLY hard in some segments. The first cave and the magikarp part were awful, ruined any replay value for me.
The postgame gets a really bad difficulty spike that you can barely grind for too.

Tell me the last time you used Spearow line, Shuckle, Jumpluff line, Aipom, Stantler, Goldeen line or Lickitung in game.
All of them are either outclassed by very similar pokemon or only have utility in competitive like Shuckle. In exchange for that you get the split, more moves and more cross-gen evos and hell if you don't wanna get fucked by early game availability you can "Wonder Trade" stuff in Goldenrod and get similarily leveled Pokemon you wouldn't be able to get otherwise.
