A pretty neat game from a graphical standpoint and some decent atmosphere. From a gameplay perspective, though, it's the absolute worst type of RNG bullshit inagibeable. The devs literally broke the game multiple times out of spite so that certain strategies and setups couldn't be relied on anymore. Honestly not worth it.

I was thinking of getting this, but the idea of getting fucked over for something out of your control and having to grind back to your previous point sounds tedious.
>>
>>381796830
I always go overboard with it.
I usually get 12 food and a 4 stack of food
8 torches
Having the light be really high can help you not get fucked over by RNGesus, so I always keep it radiant.
You can get by with less torches if you have a move that increases the light while in combat.
Also food heals so it's always nice to have along, plus you get money back for extra when you complete the quest.

Make sure to get the DLC. It adds to the experience.

Remember to take things slow. Its a super long RPG. Also you're going to lose quite a bit of people, maybe even restart more than a few times.

However that's part the learning curb. Is to figure out what works for you, what doesn't. There's no hand holding in the game beyond the tutorial.

You're limited on space, so you need take bare essentials to survive a dungeon. Healing diseases/afflictions & distressing eats up a lot of costs early on. Not to mention needing a few thousand gold just to go back into dungeons safely.

However once you got few reasonable groups. You can start doing farming runs.

Strap in son. The game isn't like your CoD or Halos. You're looking at a minimum 100+hr RPG, with DLC that adds on to that.

As for the not being able to take high level dudes in low level dungeons. Its balancing. You're suppose to recruit fresher faced heroes along the way.

Having a full roster is a must.

Literally all the damage bad rng in this game throwes at you can be minimized with proper planning and group comp. If you just run in with no real idea of what your groups strengths and weaknesses are and don't equip skills and trinkets to compliment them, you will get rekt. A lot of the grinding people complain about is their fault for not fucking reading what skills do and what resistances enemies have. The game isn't just about combat, it's also heavily about rng management.

This is why you suck at the game. Pretty much every skill save for a few basic attacks on support characters are useful in the right party comp. Swapping out skills based on what adventures you are using and going for a specific party dynamic will stop a lot of the bullshit.

XCOM is a fucking roguelike if you want to use proc gen and perma death as what makes the genre. Just look at this and Nethack. The game lacks quantized turns/tiles, there's no actual dungeon to explore just encounters relative to what the dungeon has to offer, no item ID system, it's not grind based, and you don't control a single character.

It's like calling Portal an FPS because it's in first person and has a portal 'gun'.
>>
>>381803302
It's possible, but different parties work best in different dungeons due to them having certain enemies and debuffs. For example, the crusader works best in the ruins because of his ability to do extra damage to undead enemies.

You're mixing up mechanics and genres. Mechanics don't define genres, the reasons why people play them do. So what DD doesn't have tiles and turns, so what it doesn't have an ID system, people play Nethack and DD for the same core reason, random encounters and permadeath. People don't play portal because it is first person, they play it because its a puzzler. You're proving my point.

Drown yourself in formaldehyde. People like you are why MMO, RPG, and Metroidvania are fucking worthless now to describe games.

The reason I brought up Portal is because there's people who think it's an fps and argue it in the same superficial way you're arguing for DD being a roguelike. You ignore the context of other aspects of the genre, especially a genre defined by its mechanical relation to the game that spawned it, and how they work with one another to form its core. Even outlier titles in the genre like Cataclysm have more in common with Rogue than DD.

People get wrecked once by RNG and remember it. People don't remember when the game is largely fair or tilts the game in their favor.
I think radiant mode helps a lot with that. Makes losing progress not so devastating

In some ways the game is built around dying.
You level up fast and higher level characters don't want to go into lower level dungeons. If you are good and lose no characters, you may end up with lower level bosses you need to kill and no characters that want to do it, so you need to dismiss leveled characters to get new unleveled ones.

I disagree. By itself it's a pretty boring and slow strat, you use ballad once, get a minor debuff and then fuck off to the back before you can really stack anything. Jester strats should really involve using his movement attacks to shift your line and put characters into advantageous positions, like say, man-at-arms if he's in the fourth slot: Finale can push him into the 3rd slot, where he can use retribution and then slide back to 4th position when the jester uses dagger. Jester teams are great at fighting shamblers because you don't have to spend empty actions to move. You can reshuffle your line and still get value from it.

I don't think I'm going to be able to beat this. The leveling is far too slow, and when you lose a level 5-6 character cause of the new Wulf event or Shriek event, there goes hours of prep time, upgrading and leveling.

To put it into frame, I got my first Wulf town raid event, go with my 6s thinking it will be like Shriek so I only pack food and torches not realizing the tons of rubble and champion fights along the way.

Lost 1 before the boss, then one more once I retreated and I've only beaten 1 of the champion bosses with another 4-5 left. I'd say I'm looking at about another 10+hrs of game time before I clear it. Not a fun prospect.
>>
Getting killed by RNG and having to relegate to broken combos for a chance
>>
>>381826171
Yeah bleed is the cherry on top, if you have other characters who can move as well, jester starts to do very well because bleed helps compensate for for his damage debuff after finale. And I mean, even in the ruins you still fight ghouls and bandits who are susceptible to bleed attacks, so you can still get value. He also has an usually high crit rate, so, that's something i like. I guess I'm just a jester fanboy, I like DOTs, movement attacks and crits.

Eventually you stop angsting over the heroes you recruit. Shortly after that veil of "omg permadeath everything is depressing" stops having an effect on the way you play, the game becomes less fun in turn.

With enough investment in infrastructure you can always come back from major losses, but eventually you may hit a snag or feel the game has become a slog as you keep re-preening your best heroes until they're all ready to go out again.

Point Blank Shot and Duelist Advance. Both hit really hard. Before I used it myself, I thought duelist advance was weak, since all other characters with a reposte ability hit like papper, but Duelist Advance hits as hard as a regular attack AND can reach all rows. Hellion can hit ANYWHERE. How do you manage to mess that up? Not only that since you have both a Hellion and Highwayman you can shift the Crusader to the back with the Hellions thrust attack and the Highwayman's duelists advance so he can lance anything in the back rows.

You want to stress him right away for the Rapturous buffs. The worse thing he can do under the affliction is whip one of your guys.

He is all about tanking damage and getting him to low hp to deal insane damage and healbomb people.

On top of his huge damage he inflicts a very heavy bleed which also debuff bleed resistence.

When he hits deathdoor he gets even more buffs and heals your party members.

He is very good and with a team to back him up he is even more powerfull. Jester and the Arbalest are his best buddies

Did you miss the part where I said it was my THIRD FUCKING QUEST.

All I have is a bunch of level 0-1 champs with no trained abilities. Hellion has a yawp, iron swan, bleedout and some other hack ability that can only hit the first two rows. Highwayman likewise has grapeshot, open vein, tracking shot and pistol shot.

I went in assuming this was an apprentice level quest where I wouldn't need to be level fucking three or some shit with trained heroes engineered into a good party load out.

It feels like an experienced player mechanic thrown literally at the start of the game.

>If your party can't reliably hit every row for good damage you haven't designed it well

Again, third quest, I'd only just unlocked the blacksmith and training hall before this. Don't even have enough artifacts to upgrade more than one or two building abilities, let alone the cash to completely equip and train some ragtag team of heroes I've thrown together.

I don't think having a miniboss which requires either characters that can hit most rows or characters with movement abilities in an apprentice level quest is a good fucking idea. I was still just getting into the ropes of things and playing around with party comps when this shit blindsided me.

ignore who you are talking to. he can only see what he has in his game, not what your situation is.

The best thing you can do is farm other levels until you have a full level 2 team with increased ranks in skills and armour.

Dealing with croc has many options, you don't need to hit all lines at once as he will always come forward. You can run a buff heavy team, or my personal favourite.
plague doctor-grave robber-Man at Arms-Man at Arms
Doctor and robber spam plague, while the two man at arms cast protect on doctor/robber and riposte. proctect/riposte duration is two turns so they are the only spells cast by the men at arms

Thanks mate, I'll give this a shot and hold out before jumping into the courtyard again.

Went in blind with a Vestal, Highwayman, Leper and Crusader, all at level 1.
I managed to beat the fucker with High and Crusader at death's door and bleeding and the Leper at 5 hp.
I moved to the next room, an hunger tile killed both the dudes at death door and the subsequent trap left my Leper at 0 hp and bleeding.
He finished the quest alone, after surviving 2 death blows.

How do torchlight trinkets work in the Courtyard? Is light always maxed or not? Don't know if Sun or Moon trinkets work.

So how does it work?
You retire and than come back later?
Do you need new invitations?

>More trinkets when the game throws more of them at you than you know what to do with
>Most trinkets are shit, some are good and others are so situational you need comparable trinkets, used on the right characters, forcing the right situations to get their benefits
>More stress so more time spent grinding to reduce stress

Yeah, nah. That shit is hella gay. The negatives out weigh the benefits by a lot.

Its fun, but its a major time commitment. There are also some serious autists in here that rage if you call the game out on any of its flaws. The game itself is very grindy, but with proper management you can improve your chances of success. You cannot however eliminate the chance of failure and you will lose people. Also never get comfortable with any team setup the developers likes to nerf anything that does well and remember most trinkets are useless. Some of the class ones are worthwhile. You can also edit the game files to allow your higher level guys to babysit your lower levels if you work the wage slave life and can't be asked to play 100+ hours for a game with limited story. Don't be surprised if you spend months without getting a certain class in the wagon. That being said the narration is boner inducing. Also, bring a lot of provisions.

Take a plauge doctor and graverobber and stack the grade. A dogmaster can protect them if you let s the doge (which can reach to the hardcap of 95%) combined with his heal he shoud simply evade a shitton of damage and stress. If you dont have a houndmaster. A MAA is the next best thing. Altough he can only attack him though rippose. Furthermore some anti paralize trinkets help

Bro that is literally what Radiant mode does. Cuts the time in half honestly. Up to lvl 4 can go to apprentice and 5/6 can go to veteran. Also you can reuse heroes for DD quests. You also get increased experience in general. It seriously cuts back on the grind massively to the point you realize just how much padding the base game is doing with grinding and restrictions.

Why should the Occultist attack in that fight if the damage debuff makes the ruble of ruin a joke.
