I've been playing it on the hardest difficulty and I'm a handful of hours in but I have Thunderjaws on lock. I had fun the first time but the combat in this game is just bland as all fuck. Not to be overly derogatory but it's baby's first monster hunter with bad AI. Game needs a ton more gameplay options. I even like the settings and designs but man the combat is boring.

Disappointment implies that you expect something. I got exactly what I wanted and more, because it looked amazing and it was fun to play as a wildlife/nature photographer.
I'm honestly more disappointed in botw because I had really high hopes and heard a lot of praise and it didn't give me what I wanted, even if it gave other people exactly what they wanted.

To beat the corrupted pair you have two options: move on rocky cliffs near them, they won't be able to use burrow attacks on you, although they'll use rock spitting attacks. Second option: get Carja sling, the one with elemental ammo, put weaves with freeze bonus into it and keep rockbiters in frozen state. They become much slower and vulnerable to damage. And of course once you do that, first thing you do is break off their claws with tearblast arrows from war bow to stop underground attacks.

I think a lot of us would be in agreement that Horizon was a fantastic new IP that sets a great foundation but has a few overall flaws that could be greatly improved upon in the sequel. I honestly believe Guerilla Games should be targeting Horizon 2 as their premier next-gen PS5 title, given that Next-gen is probably 3-4 years away, and Horizon 2's dev time should warrant around that much in order to having a meaningfully improved sequel.

Things that Horizon gets right are the graphics, combat mechanics/systems, story/lore and overall presentation. Things that need improvement are:

World Design: I enjoyed Zelda and Horizon for different reasons, but there's no doubt that Horizon is an action game and Zelda is an exploration game. The world in Horizon is good by any objective measure, especially compared to most other open world titles, but I wouldn't consider it top-tier. Worlds I would consider top tier are Zelda and GTA, and for different reasons. But one main one is that around every step there is something interesting to do in those games. In Horizon, there are fun creatures to battle, but there's little reason beyond that to explore, and the locations simply do no have the density or unique recognizable areas like something in Zelda. In a game like Zelda, I can be clear across the map (which is huge), and notice something I already discovered. It's a bit hard to describe how magical the world design of Zelda is, but you look out across the distance and have only a hint of what that area may be, but as you get closer you realize not only how vast and varied each area is but how much there is to do in each area. There's a great sense of micro-macro scale and the areas are all extremely unique and distinctive.

One major issue with Horizon is that the world design has different areas, but there's nothing generally distinctive about them beyond their environment (mountain, jungle, desert). Zelda had amazing ruins all over the place with all sorts of things to discover, and you could see them from mid-range coming into view as you explored. Horizon is essentially just land, with nothing interesting to interact with beyond the robo dinos.
Charcters: Outside of Sylens, Ross, and Aloy, none of the NPCs are memorable or interesting. This is something that a lot of open world games suffer from, but in Horizon I think it's just as bland and uninteresting from a tribe perspective. I really did not get engaged into the other people of the world, there were a lot of towns but none of them particularly interesting. Compare this, again, to other top tier titles like Zelda where there are tons of unique and interesting NPCs scattered throughout that really managed to flesh out the world.

Story presentation: The story is very good overall, and the cutscenes are nicely done. However, I had a real problem with all of the lore being mostly confined to derivative and bland ruins with tons of audio and text logs. I really don't have time for that. Please present the meaningful points of the lore in the actual story and don't force me to go through all of these derivative areas over and over again to find the important bits.

Traversal: I think the engagement with the world could have been greatly improved if there was more traversal variety. Perhaps your ability to traverse the world gradually improves with new items you discover over time (metroidvania style). As it stands, the world is pretty, but static. There's very little reason for it to exist other than to fight.
Ruins/Tombs/Puzzles: The Cauldrons were nice, but I feel that they could have been a lot better. They were just a different environment to, again, fight robo-dinos. I feel that the Cauldrons should have been more of a requirement for the main quest, there should have been roughly 8-12 of them, and they should have involved more environmental variety, contained puzzle sequences, and unique boss encounters of enemies you don't see for the rest of the game.
Too much checklist game design [Ubisoft]: I feel that the bloat of the game just made it feel too familiar to other games and I simply do not enjoy any of this type of side quest content. Focus more on the key gameplay elements for the single player campaign, and have some varied side quest content that has more interesting gameplay diversity and more meaningful payoff for completing them.

On pure production scale(no corrupted or boss-tier), which type of machine gave you the most trouble?

Because for me it's Fire Bellowbacks, you get to fight them very early, when you haven't unlocked many abilities or bought weapons and weaves, their fire eats up your HP like nothing, and the spit attack has insane level of prediction, you pretty much can only dodge by running one direction and then dodging only after it was set to a trajectory. Fighting one in the cauldron was hundred times harder for me than fighting Thunderjaw.

I thought that Aloy was pretty cute. I don't know why some of you act like she was the ugliest character you have seen in recent history.

Besides, the armor that shows her navel looks fucking great on her.

She was cute enough, but her VA was garbage. Half the dialogues are either her mumbling, or quivering with tears. Worst part about picking any of the heart dialogue options was having to listen to her as if she's going to bawl her eyes out before she finishes a sentence. Thankfully most of the time heart options were just too compassionate for me, so I mostly used brain options.
