Is WH40K supposed to be a criticism of religion? Space Marines are obviously inspired by religious fanatics from the dark ages who are obsessed with destroying witchcraft, blasphemy, etc.
>>
>>381780192
No, it is a setting to sell expensive miniatures, not a philosophical critique. Space Marines being obsessed with destroying witchcraft and blasphemy is excusable in a dark and horrific world where witches and daemons are actually real and seeking your eternal soul.
Is there a specific game you were hoping to talk about here?
>>
It's a post-modern critique of far right ideologies.
>>
>>381780192
No, it's a setting where a bunch of nerds in the 80's mixed their grimdark/medieval OC fantasy game with every single popular/cool sci-fi concept at the time, then let it evolve over ~40 odd years.
>>
>>381780192
It's a universe to sell expensive miniatures. That's it. If you're looking for some deep anti-religion themes you've come the wrong place.

>The god they pray to, the Emperor, regularly answers prayers
>The Emperor dedicates his existence to holding back the forces of Chaos and keeping the astronomicon lit while his physical shell rots on a golden throne.

Doesn't seem very anti-religion to me.

>dark ages
Will you historical illiterate retards stop using this in the wrong context.

Dark ages was pre-crusades and was called that because there weren't many written texts to go back to right after the fall of the roman empire. Churches in this time period didn't have that much power and didn't have many of the modern doctrines.

In the 11th century you get the crusades and increase in wealth plus more power to the church.

The witch burning was more in the renaissance than in the the middle ages you are thinking of.

It USED to be a parody of fascism but these days it's completely unironic.

basically >>381781257.
It's outright stated that if the Imperium wasn't a giant authoritarian monster then humanity would have been exterminated/enslaved.
>>
>>381781119
The god they pray to has no choice in the matter and was a committed atheist in life, the only reason his corpse adorns a throne and projects the Astronomicon is because his followers strapped him onto it while he was dying and forcefeed him the souls of thousands a day, to the point that it's more like shining a light through a prism than it is any conscious or deliberate action on his part

There's no real proof that faith in the Emperor is rewarded directly by him or if it's just some Warp fuckery that happens to tap into the part of the Warp where the Emperor's power is projected

Of all the other gods you've got two bickering football hooligans, four manifestations of mortal desires run rampant and a mostly dead pantheon of Ancient Greek style assholes

It was all originally a prank/parody/pastiche of sci-fi troupes cranked up to 11 and edgy and then people wanted to take it seriously, which is all well and good, but you can't really ever get rid of how it started.

>notProtoss
Don't say another Goddamn word. Up until now, I've been polite. If you say anything else - word one - I will kill myself. And when my tainted spirit finds its destination, I will topple the master of that dark place. From my black throne, I will lash together a machine of bone and blood, and fueled by my hatred for you this fear engine will bore a hole between this world and that one. When it begins, you will hear the sound of children screaming - as though from a great distance. A smoking orb of nothing will grow above your bed, and from it will emerge a thousand starving crows. As I slip through the widening maw in my new form, you will catch only a glimpse of my radiance before you are incinerated. Then as tears of bubbling pitch stream down my face, my dark work will begin. I will open one of my six mouths, and I will sing the song that ends the Earth.

It was originally criticism pointed towards the orwellian british society back when the game was first conceived. And it was not a unique form of criticism, W40K loans ideas heavily from 2000AD comics like Judge Dredd and most notably Nemesis The Warlock.

>>
>>381783630
The Tau, but I don't think they ripped off the Protoss from them. The tau codex was first released in 2002 or so, starcraft came out in 1998.
Bar the color scheme, they're not very similar.
>>
>>381783567
I mean, Terminator, Dune, Starship Troopers, 2000 AD, Elric...
>>
>>381783876
There are several tabletop simulators for free and people do play wargames online (Blood Bowl is the biggest one I think, see FUMBBL). But doing so will lack the miniature side of the hobby and the social gatherings. Also usually fucks 3D terrain rules up.
>>
>>381783450
>W40K loans ideas heavily from 2000AD comics like Judge Dredd

Didn't they also share vehicle designs with one another?
>>
>>381780192
No. Originally it was to be one giant sci-fi satire that took in stuff from a shitload of other settings. Space Marines even used to be space cops without the whole super soldier thing.

Then it changed and introduced a lot of things that were a thing before 4th ED changed it (Illiyan Nastase being a human-eldar hybrid within the Ultramarines, Squats being a playable faction, Chaos Eldar who were too OP, Chaos Genestealer Cults, Ork Genestealer Cults, Orkz looking like Nazis and more).

4th ED was the time when 40K's lore was still pretty good...and then later editions would see a drop in quality (see GK in Codex Daemonhunters and in 5th ED GK Codex...good thing it was fixed later).

40K lost itself.

Games Workshop also produced a Judge Dredd skirmish game complete with miniatures way back when - which means using Judge Dredd as a Commissar is 100% okay in GW stores by there own rules.
>>
>>381784614
Rogue Trader was a complete mess, 2nd Edition created the setting, 3rd Edition changed a lot of it and made it darker and more serious, 4th mostly carried the torch on without doing anything and 5th edition onwards was complete spergout time.

the setting is a uniquely British setting that sets its self apart from American future optimism like star trek and star wars.It uses historic medieval aesthetic to illustrate that things are not any better indeed worse in the future.
This dark mocking future is a common troup in British sci fi like judge Dredd, sadly Doctor who has forgotten this for its new tumblr audience

Isn't that the reason why Warcraft and Starcraft exist and take so much from their counterparts?
It would make sense that GW showed them art of their new race to add them into the Starcraft prototype.

They were, but their negotiations didn't come through, so blizzard decided to do their own fantasy thing and then their own space thing. As far as I know, those deals happened way before starcraft was even conceived, so it's very doubtful.

The Space Marines are living weapons whose certains emotions are imposed (rage to the enemies of the Emperor and brotherhood) or nulled (fear and libido) on them to make them more dangerous in battle. They are not longer humans and sometimes it is a cause of bad blood between them and the Imperial Guard or becoming corrupted by Chaos.

>>381780192
I don't know how to feel about 40k. I've read some books but ultimately the only conclusion I've come to is that everyone aside from the Imperial Guards are faggots of varying degrees and that in the one book I properly remember Stanhope and Carson are the shit.

Ultramarines are much more humanitarian than most Chapters - remember that Guilliman was a statesman first and a fighter second, and always prioritised getting a conquered world's infrastructure up and running before moving on to the next battle. He drilled this attitude into his men, and it's stayed for the last 10,000 years.

You can get pretty good models even for your kids at a reasonable price and the money scales with the details.

See, the problem is that you take the obviously ridiculous statement seriously somehow, as if you have some issues about proving your maturity or something.

40k is all about excess. This is why literally everyone can find something they enjoy in the setting. Facism is ultra facism, comedy is there and it's ultra comedy when it happens. Drama is ultra drama, etc etc. It's honestly one of the best sci fi settings out there.

Not really, it's not really a criticism of anything. Some people accuse the imperium of being fascistic but it's more of a tribalistic theocratic oligarchy since the emperor was put on the golden throne.

Different worlds can live however they want as long as they don't worship chaos, so there are ancap worlds, communist worlds primitivist world's, fortress worlds , etc.

40k doesn't really support any idealogy. Also Lorgar did nothing wrong.

After Russ and The Lion. Im certain traitors will get 4 God Alligned Primarchs + Lorgar, so it stands to reason Loyalists will have 5. Russ is doubtless returning because Space Wolves are top sellers and he has the rivalry with Magnus to milk, DA similarly sell well and Cypher came back for Gathering Storm. Sanguinius could return as reports say when the HH books reach the end battle some things will be retconned and as above BA sell well, I expect he'll be the last Loyalist released. For Dorn either him, Corax or Vulkan could return. Though they could have 6 and bring in Peturbo, in which case Dorn is a shoe in.

being a loyalist doesn't necessarily mean being a marine. you might just be a grunt who doesn't get to do any of that. even if you are a marine the only things you'll feel any more is "I hate Xenos Heretics and Mutants" and "I love the empire" They're super powered husks of their former selves

Plus the empire is pretty shit. Most citizens live in squalor on a hive, are forced to praise the emperor or die, there's no freedom of expression or speech, and while you won't be raped to death by an alien, you probably will by another human in the dark alley at the bottom of a spire on a hiveworld. Don't worry, your ass will keep the mutie pleasured for weeks to come.

Being a Tau is the best possible outcome in the 40k verse.

Space Marines actually aren't the ones going around spouting "BURN THE HERETIC" though, that's the Inquisition. Some Space Marines do, but not all or even most of them. A lot of Space Marines either personally met the Emperor or have met someone who has, so they know the Emperor didn't tell them to go around burning Aliens and anyone who gets labelled "heretic" by a bunch of crazy people on Terra.

That Space Marines are the ones doing this shit is just a misconception which became habit and stereotype, mainly by people who don't actually read the source material and probably who just played the video games and thus assume Space Marines going around shouting "HERETIC!" constantly.

Duncan will guide you.
>>
>>381802556
That seems complex, but here's how it works:

Primer Chaos Black
The green is painted on all over, like drybrush, a couple layers
The Pepto Bismol color goes over the ooky parts the same way
Bone is generally thin coats built up, lighter colors especially (this guy airbrushed the tips dark brown)

Black on the bolter, gunmetal on the bolter

Then wash it with Agrax or Badab to look really worn, washes do so much work and you can never splash enough on there to do harm

Spess Mehreens are an excellent way to learn how to do these techniques, Chaos is more interesting visually but not that much more challenging once you get the basics down.

Living saints like Celestine are pretty damn indicative of the Emperor's power being real. You can argue semantics over whether or not being the most powerful psyker in the universe qualifies him as a god or not, but at that point you can say that none of the chaos or eldar gods are "real" ones either.

He's an enormous presence in the warp with a patron race, he's 40ks version of Sigmar being are mortal that ascended, which is common in classical mythology as well

Because following the path of the dark gods, striving for immortal daemonhood, and making a stronghold in the warp before the overwhelming Tyranid forces arrive is a bad idea? Not to mention thinking yourself the "good guys"

Face it loyalist, the warriors of chaos fighting from the eye of terror know your Emperor better than the very imperium that worships him, and even the revival of Gulliman has only revealed that your failing empire is a parody of the Emperor's vision of it.

it's just banter

Aw man, got some fond memories of Necromunda. I had two gangs, Goliath (later converted into a Genestealer cult for custom Tyranid scenarios) and Escher because of their design, they had some fucking cool models. I converted a Callidus Assassin for the leader of the Escher gang, fun times.
Then the friend who played tabletop games with me moved away and I sold every model I had to make rent for a month. Fucking life

only on the surface level
if you go deeper its a strong endorsement of authoritarian systems of government when faced with existential threat. Fro example, cowardly and effete planetary nobles sitting on the rubble-heap of neoliberalism's massive hive cities require judge, jury and executioner in the form of arbites, inquisitors and space marines to excise, with ruthless application of force, daemonhosts who would destroy entire subsectors if allowed to roam free

in this specific sense it is also an endorsement of the spiritual defence against 'powers and principalities' religion offers, because instead of vague spiritual threats these things frequently kill billions

I wouldn't say it's an outright endorsement of authoritarianism. The Imperium is oppressive out of a desperate need to keep everyone dedicated to survival in a universe filled with genocidal aliens. But outside of that, it's always made clear the it's not really a nice place to live.

>>381810417
>why the FUCK did Emps hold back against Horus and get his ass crippled in the first place?
Honestly I'd bet the Emperor was becoming more and more fond of the primarchs over time, but just had turbo autism due to being timelessly immortal and seeing people die all the time, so the critical point when he finally got all mushy was when he realized one of his "sons" had grown up to be just as big and powerful as he was.
>>
>>381810417
>Space marines don't cry about daddy issues, why do the Primarchs care so much?
Because
A: Space Marines are literally indoctrinated from prepubescence, primarchs were not
B: The space marines always had captains and chapter masters who were like fathers to them, Primarchs sometimes had "fathers" but they either died or became traitors
C: The primarchs genuinely thought the Emperor loved them, he just had s shitty way of showing it. Imagine growing up thinking your dad loved you, and then finding out he thought nothing more of you than a burst condom

Fun Fact: the original Space Marines were generally depicted as convicts, thugs, and other undesirables having some discipline whipped into them, given power armour, guns, and combat drugs then sent into battle.
>>
>>381801430

Is this from the Dark Imperium set or a new novel?
>>
>>381780192
It's not a criticism, it's the nature of the setting.
40K is the setting where religious fanaticism, expectation of absolute moral virtue, and fascism are not just justifiable but mandatory. The Emperor tried to promote atheism to starve the Chaos Gods of power but that didn't work, in part because you don't have to actually worship them, just have feelings that align with their nature. The next best thing is to devote all of humanity's religious fervor toward him and purge heretics on sight, which is what the Imperium tries to do.

Also the Medieval period wasn't like what you think it's like but whatever.

No it's supposed to be a strategy game. When you look at the text related to Warhammer do you seee a bunch of stat tables and rule about combat or treaties on religion?

God you're fucking stupid. Let me put it to this way. Let's say you wanted to say something about religion.

Which of these sounds more appealing
*Write a some text publish it online, possible a print version
*Create an intricate table top game and make some of the minitures have crusader motifs

microscopic tears
essentially, each tear has the diameter of a few micrometers
consider the volume of a sphere is 4/3 pi r^3 if the average human tear is about 5 milimeters across, the tear has a volume of 5.24x 10^9 microtears
so basically, it takes about 5 billion or so guardsmen to die for a single human sized tear to be formed.
if the microscopic tears had a diameter of 50 micrometers, that number drops to about 4 x 10^6 people per human sized tear

going by the basis of WW2 being the death of 60 million people, the emperor would've shed 15 tears
