I want a Lunch or Bulma. Not only because of waifu factor, but I want original characters with unique fighting styles.

What is the appeal of Dragonball? Never watched it as a kid, my entire exposure to it is from playing Xenoverse which I didn't like. I'm interested in this game because it's ArcSys, but am not hyped about the Dragonball aspect.

Your bias is clear and you cannot rationally argue why their designs are good, you're thinkin' with your willy instead of your brain. They have the same amount of thought they put into background characters, put into their designs. There's no convincing you but I'm not going to waste an opportunity to complain about my problems with the character designs in Super.

Color throughout this design is monotonous and not broken up well enough, they try with the lighter fur beard(? The profile on the right implies it's more of a chest tuft but the 3/4ths drawing makes it look like a beard) and bit on his body, but those end up looking unnatural. All visual interest is up top despite having a fighting style based all around kicks, you'd think they would take advantage of that with the design beyond just his up weirdo legs, but his entire bottom half, sans his gloves, is a single red mass. They could've remedied this with a different tail color, they could've colored his boots black like his gloves/cape or a third color to compliment the neutral black and red (Green, maybe?). There might be a reason for the poor color layout, maybe giving him any more colors would have given animators trouble, they can hardly keep things accurate at the breakneck pace they have to work to produce this shit.

And beyond the like of visual interest, his features aren't nearly as appealing as some of Toriyama's anthropomorphic designs, something he seems to enjoy enough to do it as much has he did with Dragon Ball/other personal works.

For comparison, a wolf from Toriyama's art book "The World". A character with as much ornate detail as this likely wouldn't pass in Super, but overall has a much more solid design, albeit with illustration in mind as opposed to animation. His features are consistent. His colors are broken up very well. His outfit tells you who he his, and what he does. This is a good design.

It's a shame that while a lot of character designs in Super borrow stock Toriyama character features, they don't implement them well.

That entire fight scene had terrible animation. It was often the same 2 key animation frames of Goku or Frieza launching at eachother being played back and firth, while an energy trail that's digitally animated is inserted with more frames in the background to give some cheap illusion that there's a lot of work being put in there. The stills look nice enough, but the _animation_ isn't there. Animation, by definition, is art in motion, and the motion just isn't there in super.

The reason why DBZ has the better animation is because of Toei's old god-like key animators. These guys drew the key animation frames which were then colored in by other cel colorists. The key animators on work in Super today don't have shit on the ones who worked in this industry in the past.

I like the latter a lot. I never really liked the idea of the Namekians being the sole creators of the dragon balls because it never fit with how these Dragons came to be. The Dragons are powerful enough that they can make someone immortal or revive people from the dead thus having powers more akin to that beyond the gods of creation and destruction. They obviously come from another realm it seems like and I do hope Super dives more into this as time goes on.
