Forced myself to finish it but there was just way too much dialogue. I wasn't expecting there to be barely any, but it just went over the top and I ended up skimming through it all after about half way through the game.

Can anyone recommend me a good CRPG that doesn't have as much talking and where your choices really matter and you can see the impact your stats/character creation choices are having? I also like interesting loot, most of it in pillars just felt like stat changes to me. I really like Fallout: NV if that's anything to go off.

To be honest I think barbarians are fucking brutal despite them being viewed as slightly underpowered. I've had a blast with them specially when you got two in your party. That's one of the last bounties in the game btw.

Hello my friends.

Currently playing Pillars for the first time. Just reached the end of Act 2 and done the Battle for Yenwood Field. Making my way through some of that Od Nua now.

Do I need to buy The White March? It's expensive as fuck and reviews seem mixed on it, but I read that it is NOT set post-game so I figure now would be a decent time to do it if I'm going to play it at all?

It's better than the main game in virtually every way, so it's worth it. And yes, you're in a decent enough place to start it.
As for the price, Paradox recently bumped up all their prices by like 50%. Check your trusted key shops.

Barbarians start out very slow, but nothing wipes out mass amount of enemies like Barb can outside of Vancian casters.

Not really. Dyrwood is quite a backwards country with a bad economy because of Waidwen's Legacy. It's a country just coming out of the medieval era where armor is still common and the most advanced firearms are matchlocks. Pallegina comments that Caed Nua is an old style fortress and that they aren't built like that anymore in the Vailian republics because it's pointless against cannons, also she wears a cuirassier style breastplate instead of full armor. The rest of the world is more technologically advanced than the Dyrwood and I can't wait to see it in PoE 2, you can see that the Orlan in the pic has a flintlock pistol, it will be a lot less medieval feeling setting than PoE 1. Sawyer did a shit load of research for the setting of Eora and it paid off, they made a familiar-ish fantasy setting in Dyrwood but they can go full Fable 2 style fantasy with firearms in Deadfire.
