This. Debt is actually good provided it is controlled, especially the consumer credit side of things (do what Singapore does and restrict credit cards to people who earn in excess of about $55k).

The problem with the modern economy isn't the concept of debt per se, it's the fact so much of it is foreign-owned (i.e. America no longer exports capital) and the fact so much of modern business funding comes from the equities markets as opposed to the banking system.

I think the reason is specifically that the Star Citizen folks didn't mean it as a scam, they're just incompetent.

If they wanted to scam people they'd have released a bare bone version of the game and run with the money.

Instead I'm pretty sure they just thought "wow, we have so much money! We're going to make the best game ever!", they got overambitious and started burning millions of dollars every month and in the end they're not even 50% done and there's no money left.
