You've obviously never used a 1440p phone, or just have shit eyesight. You don't need a magnifying glass to see the difference. You can hold the phone five feet away, and still see how sharp it looks, especially when watching videos. Text is incredibly sharp and reading is especially nice, too. The difference in battery life isn't that bad either, and you can just turn down the resolution to 720p if you know you'll be away from a charger for a while and aren't doing anything that will benefit from a better resolution.

At arm's length a normal 1080p phone is indistinguishable from a 1440p phone, the pixels are so tightly packed that your eyes just can't resolve the extra detail, you need to get really close to see it. I'll take the longer battery life any day.

The screen technology makes a much bigger difference to the image quality, a 1080p oled screen shits all over a 1440p LCD.
