First of all no it doesn't have that much reading if you can read fast and above a fifth grade level. Secondly when did reading become a bad thing?

It's alright, get the director's cut and Dragonfall DC as that's their best one. HK is also cool simply for the ghoulified samurai you can recruit.
Just make sure to look up the major used ettiquite skills so you don't get cucked out of dialogue options.

When they stopped forcing kids to read novels in school.

Pretty mediocre and has some definite flaws, but overall enjoyable enough.

The sequels correct most of them (especially Hong Kong with its engine upgrades) and are generally better in almost every way though.
