You can have over a dozen SSR servants as a F2P as long as you're patient. The game hands out 4* welfare servants during some events as well.

A lot of people are F2P while beating everything. the issue isn't being F2P, the issue is staying F2P when a servant you really want suddenly comes out, or when they introduce paid gatchas that will guarantee a SSR servant.

No. There are weak parts, but people over exaggerate they are bad because they look at their prior VN experience through nostalgia glasses. They forget how fucking shit some scenes of Tsukihime, KT, FHA or FSN were until they finally got to the good parts. Do you have reading comprehension problems? It doesn't matter if "Shirou was a character". The VN itself isn't exactly a masterpiece and is a dragging, boring mess with pacing problems. Every route, even UBW. I didn't give a shit about what they had for dinner or how he cooked Saber's meals or all the monotonous crap of FSN abysmal and glacial pacing. Good ideas, interesting characters, but the execution needed to improve. Tsukihime is terrible in pacing too because it's rushed as fuck, so the characters feel completely one-dimensional stock characters and Shiki had barely a personality.
