Dead Rising 1 in hindsight had the perfect ending, Frank escaped from Willamette with the truth, with the government partially admitting fault. Eventually though the incident was soon forgotten and Frank's 15 minutes of fame blew over. That's not to say I dont appreciate the other games but thats because they stand on their own, except for 4.

tv and movies do the same shit. if you're going to invest a ton of fucking cash producing something, it just makes sense to continue a popular IP to reduce risk. even if TLOU2 is utter garbage and gets a 14 on metacritic before release, people are still gonna buy it. the reverse is also true, where you can take a shot on a new IP and it can be amazing and get rave reviews but it might just fail to get noticed by the general gaming public and the people who put up the cash to make the game don't make any profit.

The world being fucked and the cordyceps were just a vehicle for the actual plot, which was of course Joel getting Elly to the Fireflies and his eventual road to self-forgiveness.
