That would break too many systems such as: messages, blood stains, other player blood stains,and invasions to some extent. They weren't trying to convey a "hardcore" experience with demon's souls or dark souls. Demon's souls was just regarded as incredibly hard so Namco used that as their ad campaign for dark souls. They've been on the record that they just wanted to make a game they liked to play. It wasn't until DSII and III did their design change to intentionally be some sort gamer killer.

It can take hours to get up to where the dragon is on your first playthrough. By that time, you'll have forgotten the fact that you ever saw it. All they had to do was have the dragon start on the other side of the bridge, and it'd be fine.

I always hear that excuse but there's a few problems with it. fior starters, the games force you to go through the exact areas over and over with huge gaps between checkpoints, unlike a normal game that's spaced reasonably, so as not to waste the players time proving and reproving what they've already demonstrated they're capable of overcoming with ease. it clashes basically and doesn't really fit with that design philosophy they're going for.

The space between checkpoints are not that far. I don't even know what to say to that. Each one has about five minutes or so of expert playing inbetween. If you are new, you start wondering why there isn't a bonfire behind every enemy you kill and it winds up feeling like an hour. If it's frustrating "reproving" then you have to be doing the content extremely quickly. Otherwise it may have been because you were careful and slow which means you haven't really mastered the area yet.

It does break systems but I didn't think I needed to explain it:
The blood stains are supposed to be hints of how other players died. If enemies were random they wouldn't work. Getting your souls back from the last place you died is supposed to give you motivation to at least made it as far as you had before. If you could be killed by an ambush that wasn't there before, it wouldn't make as much sense and would instead just be an arbitrary award for getting through more or less content depending on the RNG. Messages worked pretty well before the game became meme status and they were useful ways to warn of traps that you might not have been perceptive enough to see. It doesn't work if everything is random. Invaders are usually at a disadvantage other than the fact that they can use enemies to their advantage. This would make them overwhelmingly good or weak in different scenarios depending entirely on how the enemies are spawned.

I think you're underestimating how truly 100% terrible people are at video games.

Fuck, most people don't even understand the most basic kind of things in first person shooters; which is the easiest genre there is. Point gun at enemy, press 1 button to shoot, kill. And they can barely do it, they just barely scrap by.

The amount of people that think dark souls is "so hard iimpossible XD" far exceeds the number of gamers who are actually competent at all genres and don't find the Souls-style of games to be all that challenging. They're harder games than most for sure, but they're just that. Games.

Five minutes of doing boring shit is a lot. Say a boss takes you a few tries to beat, that's something close to 20 minutes wasted doing the same mindless fights you've already mastered ages ago. Meanwhile the boss fights themselves are usually just a couple minutes long. There's a reason everyone rushes past the levels ignoring all enemies. But even if you do that it can be incredibly tedious, especially when elevators are involved.
