This is a trilogy that progressively got worse with each new game.
>>
>>381713705
I don't know. It's probably not as good as 2, but I liked that it tried to do something different.

2 was an iterative sequel where I didn't like the things they iterated on. 3/4ths of the game is THAT level.

Funnily enough, the original Metroid trilogy got progressively better with each installment.

Glad to heard you had fun anon, now go beat Prime 2, it only gets better and harder from there specially if you play Hard Mode, expect to get rek more often than in Prime 1.
>>
>>381722192
I hate how devs hide difficulty modes behind finishing the game first, he has to play normal before he can hard
>>
>>381720793
I also beat it for the first time yesterday
Loved the 2d metroids and heard a lot of good things about prime, shit was fantastic
>>
>>381722296
On the Wii version, there's 3 difficulties. Normal and Hard are unlocked by default. Hypermode is unlocked by finishing the game.
>>
>>381722296
I through the Trilogy had it unlocked on the get go no?
>>
>>381721681
MP1 was mostly Nintendo's game and Retro developed it for them. Retro had more freedom for MP2 and 3 and those games weren't as good as the first one. By 3 they were already trying to make it into a halo game.

So yeah I'd say MP4 will be fine.
>>
>>381722686
Is hyper hard mode rebranded or an actual new and harder difficulty?
>>
>>381722686
>>381722710
hypermode is hard, hard is normal. they renamed them to normal (easy), veteran (normal), hypermode (hard, only unlocked when you beat the game)
>>
>>381722825
It's just hardmode from the GC version, AFAIK. Normal is the new difficulty, and Hard is the GC's normal.
>>
>>381722742
>2 wasn't as good as the first one

implying
>>
Is it me or does the first person in Prime feel awkward at times? I'm usually good at FPS stuff, but a lot of things in the Prime games seem really disorienting and that's made worse by the slow turning and narrow FOV.
I love 1 and 2 other than that, though.
>>
>>381713705
For some reason, while I didn't like it much back then, I played it again in the trilogy and I think 3 is actually pretty good.
It's just vastly different from the 2 first first games in terms of pacing : there is much more action and much less exploration. I think Retro tried to change a bit the formula and that's probably why I was upset when the game came out. But now, I don't know, I think it holds its ground really well, in the end all 3 are at least very good games.

Nintendo must definitely announce the trilogy HD remake for the Switch though. Playing Metroid Prime on a handheld device is like a dream.
>>
>>381721817
Its difficulty was bullshit. Dark World was both linear but because just being in there hurt you it never was fun being in there until you got the light suit. Which is about 2/3 into the fucking game. And unlike other Metroid games where you might just have to run through it once and get a suit to never worry about it again you are always thrown in there. 2 could have been great but it was just a slog to go through.

3 was awful because going to different planets and meeting the Federations never felt right for a Metroid game.

>>
>>381723209
It definitely feels weird at first (I was also used to "regular" FPS) but the way the game is designed with the lock system makes up for that type of controls. After some time, you'll get used to this control hopefully.

Anyway though, I feel like there was some weird stuff with perspective going on at times, but other than that I never really had any issues with it.

>>381723679
The controls are not very intuitive at first, so that can explain why you're struggling. But yeah, MP1 is not extremely hard but still a bit difficult at times.
>>
>>381722945

I don't like them in general either, but they're actually great in the Prime games. IMO, they're better than the GC version.
>>
>>381720793

I played through the Metroid series for the first time about 7-8 months ago, played Prime 1 and 2, then Super, Zero Mission, and Fusion, eventually got around to Prime 3 a few months ago. I honestly enjoyed the fuck out of all of them, both the 2d and 3d ones were great. Fusion was probably the weakest of the ones I played, it was fun, but I didn't like the linearity and level design of it. Prime 3 had a bit of a different atmosphere and exploration, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
>>
>>381725680
See it's odd because I've only played prime 3. But that was awhile ago when I tolerated motion controls. I just like being in a comfortable position when playing my vidya

>>381726205
They're kind of different. Prime 3 is a lot more linear and action focused/cinematic from what I remember. Prime 1 is more about exploring the world, and there's very little focus on story.
>>
>>381726205
>literally the only metroid game i've ever played
You got some catching up to do, anon. You should for sure try out Super and Prime 1 if you're interested in playing more of the series. They're both better than Prime 3, as good as that game was.

This is objectively wrong, the difference between them is like comparing Dark Souls to Dark Souls II Prime 1 and Dark Souls are the only 3D games that have god tier interconnected world design and it's a shame they dropped it for the subsequent games.

If you add normal maps to the textures, you can use the tessellation and displacement to do stuff like this. Unfortunately, the textures are generally too small to make it look good. But, in theory, this could be amazing.

>>381731286
Most likely. I'm not an expert on it, but basically, Dolphin's displacement works based on the amount of detail in the normal maps. So if you have a small texture, there's not a lot of detail for them to work with, and you wind up with the vague lumpyness shown in the webm. Larger textures would probably allow it to make much more defined details out of the maps.

displacement.jpg
793KB, 2560x1440px
>>381731837
I should clarify that that's the original snow texture, just with a specular map added in the second image. Here's another example. Top left has per vertex lighting, top right has per pixel lighting, bottom left is just with a specular map, bottom right is with that and a tiny bit of displacement, though you can see it still doesn't manage to look very good with how small the textures are.

I'll fuck off now because this is only tangentially Metroid related. But if anyone has the talent, I wish someone would make some high res texture replacements for these games.

I dont know if I would call that a bad boss battle, though. Difficult, yes. Maybe a bit of RNG fuckery on whether you got hit by the boost ball is arguable. It was very satisfying managing to get him down, though.

One thing I really appreciated was Prime's willingness to experiment with puzzle-bosses. Spider guardian and P-Bomb guardian were very clever, I thought.

Actually I never read that one before and it puts it in a different light than what I had previously read. This one implies that he just could only see the flaws in his work and was sick of looking at it. That's fair.

I've heard other devs make similar complaints. They can't enjoy a game after spending years assembling and testing every bit of it.

Nah, it's actually quite dull and easily the weakest of the three. I replayed it a few months ago after replaying the other two with months of space between them and ended up with a bittersweet taste.
The attempt of plot with all the corrupted bounty hunters, the computer that wouldn't shut her stupid mouth up, the excess of gimmick shit like having to shake enemies instead of shooting them to death... Those are things that made the experience worse to me.

In fact I feel like Corruption is actually closer to Other M than to the other to Primes.

From what I understand, the astounding effects on Samus' arm cannon couldn't be ported over to the Wii version for some reason. I want to try to motion controls, but the first time I charged up an ice beam and the arm cannon didn't freeze over, I think my heart would break. I missed out on the N64/PS era, so that was the first 3D game that I ever owned. I have those graphics burnt into my soul.

If they managed to turn a disaster company like Retro around I'm not really worried about what they'll do with this new team. The best things of the Prime trilogy were thanks to Nintendo and Tanabe anyway, not the people at Retro who already left to have zero success elsewhere.

Because of how areas are loaded. When you shoot a door it triggers the next area to load. Certain tunnels are used solely as well designed loading screens for the bigger areas that require more processing power. It's the reason why the door to the Artifact Temple in 1 takes forever to load.

Well I don't have much else to post about it anyway. Unless someone talented makes high-res versions of Prime's textures, that's pretty much as far as I can go with that. Otherwise, if we want to talk about prettying up Prime with Dolphin, the only other things we can do are increase the resolution, add AA, and use gratuitous amounts of shaders.

Love the HUD but I think the dof, especially on the arm cannon, is a downgrade. It looks like a modern indie game now though so that's neato.

Yeah, the DOF is partially what I meant by "gratuitous" shaders. It's more of a neat little oddity than anything I'd actually play with, but I imagine it could lend itself to taking some nice scenic screenshots.

It can also be pushed really fucking far.

I was talking more about the shader effects on the life display. The HUD easily lends itself to enhancing the atmosphere of the prime games.

Do you have a shader setup that you would actually play the game with? I think bumping the resolution is the least you could do without it being intrusive to the original experience.

Something particularly interesting though is that there's a fog shader as well as light scattering, so you can disable the game's native fog and re-add fog that allows for a somewhat better view distance while keeping the same feeling. You can even make it whatever color you want.

>>381749596
Some scene tonemapping, very minor bloom, less dense fog. That's about it. Just to improve the colors a little bit.

Looks so weird being able to see the sky in tallon overworld
>>
>>381751332
It's weird that they actually decided to model the sky in Tallon overworld. Every other area just has a skybox that follows you. Tallon has an actual flat layer of polygons above every room with the sky texture. I'd guess that they did it that way because the sky's texture is animated, while every other skybox is completely static.

GameSpot: "Do you think we'll ever see a 2D Metroid on Switch?"

Sakamoto: "We are always, always thinking about ways that we can excite the fans of the series and come up with stuff that they will want to see and play, and we love that challenge, but there's nothing we can discuss in terms of Switch at this point. Yeah, we'll discuss it. (laughs)"

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2017-metroids-producer-talks-mercurysteams-cont/1100-6450980/

I'm starting to really believe that Metroid Dread will be on the 3DS.
>>
>>381754353
May be Nintendo wants him to stay on the 3ds to avoid another Other M fiasco
>>
>>381755045
I'm fine with that, I hope they add GBA to the 3DS VC that way I can have Metroid 1-5 plus Zero Mission and Samus Returns.
>>
>>381717321
So then why are you all excited for 4?
>>
>>381750687
While I like that there's more details to see now that the fog is gone, I think it personally ruins a bit of the atmosphere of the tallon overworld. The original landing site really gives off this opening in the middle of a super dense and mysterious jungle feel with the overly dense fog. The desaturated colors also help this out.

It's a damn shame the fog covers the otherwise great looking skybox though. A true HD remaster of the prime games where these shaders can be implemented on a scene by scene basis would be great to see.

I'm replaying Metroid Prime and it's not nearly as good as i remember. It may just be because I've marathoned the 2D Metroids a few days earlier but Samus feels really sluggish and the platforming feels awkward. Metroid is my favourite series and the reason is because Samus's movement is smooth and the maps are designed in such a way that you can get to any area in the map very quickly. In Prime, the exploring just feels sluggish and since the game isn't optimised for speed like the 2D games, it takes ages to get anywhere. I've only just gotten the space jump so it may get better, but i remember Prime 1 being my favourite out of the three so I'm dreading replaying the other two.

>All of them were good though

Yeah.

People need to take off their MP1 goggles, honestly. Or replay 2 and 3.
>>
>>381719492
Samus actually controls a lot better in Metroid II.
>>
>>381760636
That isn't the contrarian opinion.
>>
>>381760968
I've played the first two more than I can count. Prime 1 definitely has more lasting appeal.
>>
>>381760806

I thought the ammo system was a neat feature at the time, but now I just see it as unnecessary due to the fact that ammunition is so readily available in the game. All it does is merely simulate scarcity, instead of actually being a source of scarcity. Though I guess it did prevent annihilator beam from being completely broken in the final fight, at least for me.

Stacking felt unnecessary as well. Should have just been like Prime 1.

>>381760968

I feel the same way. In fact I must admit that I like 2 just slightly above, but ever so slightly that they're almost equal.
>>
>>381760976

People are always putting 1 above 2, and then there's the occasional person putting 2 above 1. Very rarely do I see anyone saying they're equal. At least on /v/ it feels contrarian because everyone here is always fighting over what is better.
>>
>>381761238
I suppose there's not much in it, and whichever you prefer could change depending on what you're looking for at the moment.
Prime 2 improves where Prime 1 was weak and vice versa.
>>
>>381761285

Yeah, you're right. Depending on my mood, I choose one or the other. I tend to treat Prime 2 like a more 2spooky Metroid, and when I'm in the mood for something horror themed it's always my go-to game in the trilogy (Dark Aether was spooky as shit in my opinion). When I'm looking for a more pure experience, a Super Metroid in 3D, I go for Prime.

The beginning area in Prime 2 where you keep finding dead Federation troopers and reading the logs is one of the most tense parts in any game I have played, the fact that there is pretty much no enemy's around just makes it worse.
