This again...

Just beat the first game today. I like the Earthbound aesthetics but it doesn't have that much appeal and the monsters are too hard to catch.

Because you are not catching them, you are becoming friends with them. Friends don't come so easily.
I became friends with all the youkai except the stupid streetpass one (it stops you from streetpassing yourself repeatedly), it only gets bad if you are very unlucky at spawning and befriending a rare one that has no reliable spawn point.

I had a tattletell for the entire game and I couldn't reliably catch monsters with the slap + the best food.

Eh, that level of tedium is what turned me off. My team stayed more or less static for the whole game because of how good AOE soultimates are.
