Spamming Extella manouver over and over wasn't fun and the movesets could have done with more options.

I feel part of the reason I liked it was simply because I never got to play CCC so this was the bootleg alternative.

Apparently, there will be at least one sequel so hopefully they fix some of the issues in that.

It's an RPG and not a very good one. It's half VN and the gameplay is basically rock paper scissors. You fight with enemies one on one and choose six consecutive actions between Attack which beats Break which beats guard and that beats attack. The problem is that you only know a handful of moves your enemy will do ans the rest you have to guess, the more you fight that enemy the more moves you will know. You also have skills that beat normal actions and stats to upgrade for your character. At the end of one in game week you fight the boss for who you have to gather info to know their moves.

I really liked the story but you're going to get a bit lost in the beggining if you know nothing about the Fate series. But it was my first Fate story and I was fine.

The gameplay is really the worst part, in the beggining you have to choose your servant and if you choose Caster who's hard mode your first time you're going to have a bad time due to her low physical attack and defense.

There is far less air combat in this one. Combos don't auto-string, so you have to be good with facing the right direction and not being hit in the back/by archers.

You have a lot of different areas to run between, rather than a straight line of rooms to plow through, so you have some tough decisions to make at times.

Combat is trivialized with the Extella Maneuver, although if you ignore that, you have a wide variety between characters with some having a lot of options and some being rather one-note. There isn't the problem of super armor that Senran has; enemies only have super armor if they enter their "super mode" during battle or are otherwise in super mode. (You have a super mode you can go into, as well.)

Not as lewd as Senran, obviously. The big thing about Extella is the story drama, not the clothes ripping. Although some characters do have some risque outfits. (No clothing customization, though.)

There is a lot less running around in comparison. Areas are connected by quick-move passages, so you're running from one hotspot to another. On the other hand, you can't "ambush" enemies as they move between areas either; they either are in their original area or they teleport to the next one.

As mentioned above, the Extella Maneuver trivializes combat decisions, but you have some nice variety in characters otherwise. Nothing as wacky as Summoning Gate or the Fairy Goddess, but still nice options. More focused on the story drama, so you'd probably want to be ready for that to enjoy it fully. Hyrule Warriors definitely had more content with those map packs.

Half the game is basically a VN. Sure, you walk around school and talk with characters, but it functionally behaves like a VN in how it progresses: get a bunch of dialogue from a character, go to a place, get a bunch more dialogue, etc. You do have the option to just talk with random NPCs (who generally have little to say) and if you want to screw yourself, you can sometimes cut it short by just going to the dungeon, but not many options.

Dungeons are a fairly typical dungeon crawl, although you are free to run around and (attempt to) dodge enemies. No random dungeons; they're the same each visit. Combat is rock-paper-scissors with selecting six attacks at a time. The biggest thing here is that each enemy has a set number of specific attack routines, even bosses. The more you fight them, the more of their moveset gets revealed, although if you are familiar with the fight you can typically use a "safe" attack routine or even predict which attack set they are going to use. I do actually like it, very much a "get stronger with more knowledge" that the series is all about, but obviously it is not something that everyone likes.

Extella is a part of the Extra subseries of Fate which is mostly separate from any of the animated works. Archer is a prominent character in the Extra series and most of his depth comes from the original FSN works, his main story being adapted in the most recent anime Unlimited Blade Works. a few other FSN servants show up in Extella but you should still be fine.

The basic premise is fine. You will be pretty confused if you don't understand that Fate is about the spirits of past heroes being summoned as servants, but past that nothing is required. Fate/Extra is its own separate reality in that sense. Very literally, since what is happening in game and even the setting are completely different from the rest of Fate.

Fate/Extella is a continuation of Fate, and does sort of assume you've played Fate/Extra and even CCC. However, those aren't required, and the game does take the time to paraphrase what already happened to bring you up to date. (Note that only one of the routes from Extra, namely Red Saber, is considered "canon". And there is some variation from what happened in Extra, although they explain exactly what that is.)
