I personally enjoyed it and really liked the tropical theme and bowser jr.

What's with the whole Sunshine is bad meme I've been hearing lately? I remember that game being incredible. What are the main complaints people have?
>>
Maybe other games are just too stressful for you.
>>
>>381708287
The platforming levels are fantastic. Then you realize they're only one minigame and the 90% of the missions are playing the dentist, moving watermelons and literally cleaning shit.

It's Mario game that forgot entirely what the series was about.

Also doesn't help that /v/ has become increasingly distasteful of Nintendo ever since they were permanently btfo'd by Breath Of The Wild.

>>

What i like and don't like about most modern games is that they're made with the intention for you to play them consistently for a long time. I prefer the way they were made when i was a kid. Beat one, onto the next.

>>
>>381708829
3D World has platforming, which is kind of the whole point of Mario. I can't say the same for Sunshine.
>>
I think with modern games its a hit or miss a little more than it used to be. Especially if you look at games that EA puts out, pay to unlock the rest of the game, im currently playing Shatae half genie hero and its nice throw back to good platforming, but i do find my self burnt out on games at times until i stumble on a gem.
>>
Modern games are focused around competitive play and trying to make gaming into a job ie esports. Older games were pretty much only created for fun. Even halo 2 was just designed around having fun.
>>
>>381708983
It's honestly a shame that the best movement mechanics and overall control (aside 64's) are locked away in sunshine, since in most other ways it is rather inferior to the rest of the 3D titles. But, its highs are just plain higher than almost all the rest purely thanks to how it controls
>>
Op, checkout a game called blasphemous. It looks really fucking good for a 16bit indie game

A common problem is that modern designers are simply bad at their job. That or the producers are wilfully melting gamedesigns into a minimum risk product - essentially shrinking the game to something that won't really blow you away but will probably be liked by a good amount of people.

Pic related came out in 1985

It literally implemented features that Skyrim used for marketing almost 30 years (!) later. Namely NPC day/night cycles. And ontop of that, the implementation in Skyrim wasn't even much better.

So how is that fucking possible?

It's either designers or producers.

>What if most modern games are just bad?
That is only half the problem. It also has to do with all of us growing up. When you're a kid, life is carefree and you want to see cool and edgy shit. So you're attracted to all these repetitive shooters and "story" games that are 2deep4u.

But as you get older and step out into the real world, you realize its shit and all you want are your feelings of innocence and happiness back. This is why games like Mario and Pokemon still sell well, cause you can just sit down, block out the world and go to a place that is more positive than real life.

I don't know about you, but I don't want to come home from a grueling day of bosses yelling at everyone over stupid decisions and only making your life worse just to play a boring rehashed shooting game.

>>
By all accounts, sunshine should be objectively the worst 3d Mario:
>a good 40% of optional shines are trash
>even 10% of the required ones are shit: sand bird, red coin bloopers, red coins in general, chucksters, corona mountain
>game completely changes styles or takes away mechanics on a moment's notice
>saturation of level thematics
>Yoshi is unlocked by beating one specific mission that the game never tells you where to find
>Yoshi and fludd nozzles are pretty gimmicky, would have been better if you could keep them permenantly
>repeats level mechanics all the fucking time
>blue coins are a garbage mess, being mission-specific sometimes
>some 100 coin shines are mission specific
>camera is worse than sm64 somehow
Despite all this, its my favorite 3d Mario. It has some magic to it that only 64 comes close to. Galaxy and 2 are great, but for different reasons
>>
>>381712250
Because Ubi is a garbage developer that hates fun.
>>381713253
Dunno. Im still in disbelief that M+R exists.
>>
>>381713347

Pokemon emerald

if you think modern vidya is shit, why are you using sunshine as a comparison? lmao
besides having the best controls at that point, the majority of missions suck ass in that game compared to 64 and I hate 64 too
a lot of them are just copy pasta cancer like chasing shadow mario or red coins. They even reuse bossfights.
Not a single area in the game has mostly good missions. Every area fucking sucks to play unless you run the game in the backround just for music.

>>
>Sunshine isn't fun
I don't know about whether or not it was a good game since the last time I played it to completion was when I was a wee lad, but the game is undeniably fun to play and even watch.
>>
It's not modern games being bad, although there is a lot of mediocre garbage being released. The fact is that there has always been more mediocre garbage than actual good games in the industry, and in the moment people will often prefer the mediocre shit they're familiar with than the actual top-tier shit. The wheat and chaff is only filtered out through decades of retrospective analysis. That fact holds true for every single industry that has anything to do with entertainment. When people talk about the best console RPG's of all time you often hear them talk about Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6, but there's not a word to be said about the absolute dreck that sold quite well around the same time.

TL:DR Sunshine is a good game, you're just mistaken in assuming that it was only because of the time it was released.
>>
i was feeling similarly but got every half life game for almost nothing (£3 instead of £43), and i can honestly say that modern games haven't even come close to the level of enjoyment. gonna play the first 3 COD game campaigns next.

I think it stems from the fact a lot of the older talent are retired. Look at Bioware. Their older games, while not perfect, did a lot of cool shit and tried stuff. Their newest stuff is done by new people who grew up on MMOs and it shows.

If anyone says /v/ isn't a bunch of counter-culture hipster cunts, show them a thread about Super Mario Sunshine. One of the best, most unique, most innovative, well polished, and best controlled main series Mario games. They hate it because they're counter-culture hipster cunts.

It surpassed Super Mario 64 in polish, control fluidity, level design, and level variety. The one thing it's definitely not is a rehash of 64. Rehashes being something that /v/ vehemently hates.

It's not perfect. You're retarded to think any game is, will, or should be perfect. A handful of blue coins are obtusely hidden and a few of the levels straddle the line of difficult and obnoxious. You can enjoy a game and recognize its flaws, you retards. Most of those flaws aren't applicable if you're not a 100% completion nutter, anyway.
>>
>>381722737
I've thought Sunshine was the weakest of the 3D Marios ever since I played it on release, I enjoyed 64 more and then when Galaxy 1 and 2 came out I enjoyed those more

Sunshine is just really flawed despite having a unique concept and there's no getting away from those flaws

I'll take any Star from Tick Tock Clock over cleaning Sirena Beach, cleaning the eel's teeth in Noki Bay, getting thrown by Piantas in Pianta Village, endlessly ground pounding to get a Durian in Ricco Harbor, popping balloons in Pinna, moving a watermelon from a hill to a shack in Gelato or the dreadful boat level from Corona.

Tick Tock Clock also had actual platforming elements, something absent from much of Sunshine's missions.
