The serious answer though, you have to prepare a lot. Like, you don't take characters to Cove missions with perks like "Receives 20% more stress in Cove". You have to put in some thoughts and planning into every mission.

But honestly, the darkest dungeon was basically throwing away your characters on the first run to find what that dungeon is about and actually organise an appropriate team to beat it. In dungeon you'll find things you can interact with and use items on. Sometimes you get negative effects and sometimes you get positive effects.

Is it possible to win by grinding in this game or are you on a timer that can put you into a fail state if you haven't progressed fast enough? Like does each area get harder the more expeditions you complete?

On your first run, no, you can fail as many times as you want. Once you beat the game once, you can choose to start a new game + with higher difficulty and a time limit.
>>
>>381705050
you can take as long as you want unless you're playing in Stygian or Bloodmoon difficulty.
>>
>>381705050

They will always provided various difficulties for each area, depending on your party. So if you have newly recruited shitters, you can still bring them to the lowest difficulty dungeon of that area.

Stagecoach bruh. Early game should be seeing which adventurers succeed/get the good quirks and which ones you should bin. Protip: dont be afraid to dismiss characters early on. There will always be fresh faces to recruit.

Then a mix of the guild and blacksmith based on whether you need more damage or accuracy and healing. Sanitarium is a good choice now if you have the gold to blow on locking in or deleting quirks. Stress healing is the least of your worries.

The problem is, in the final dungeon, if you abandon it, you will lose ONE MORE mercenary randomly. At max upgrade, you can only recruit up to lv3, if I remember correctly, so you still have to train them back up again.

Also, there is this event that will periodically comes to you after you hit lvl6 with one of the characters. It's really annoying boss fight and if you don't beat them, you lose one of the town's upgrade.

Though you can always recruit a full team of shitters, bring them all in to suicide and it would considered as a week past and you won't lose any upgrade.

Organise your team properly.
Area-specific team might sounds a bit overwhelming at first so you don't really have to go that far. Just make sure you get a tank, dps and a healer.
>>
>>381707193
It's better to retreat if you feel like you're going to get ruined, as your team will come back with what's in their inventory. A total party wipeout results in the loss of all the gold and heirlooms you got so far, plus the trinkets your heroes had equipped. Better have 4 (or less, if you're unfortunate) superstressed heroes at home rather than losing some valuable artifacts.

Also, it's not a bad idea to upgrade the stage coach in order to always have 4 heroes ready for adventure. The recruit resolve upgrade is expensive but worth it.

Stress ranges from 0-200. At 100, you get negative debuff and you can't remove it until you get back in town and use one of the destress facility.

It's a bad idea to bring anyone with over 100 stress in because they will also cause stress damage to the rest of the team. Once they hit 200, they get heart attack and die.
>>
>>381708504
not outside of dungeons, but it can happen in dungeons given the right circumstances.

Mad characters(masochistic, depressed, hopeless, fearful, etc) may refuse heals, refuse to take turns, refuse to eat, attack someone else from your party, move forward to get attacked by enemies, berate other party members, and damage themselves.

No, you cannot win by grinding period. The only thing "leveling" up your characters does is increase their resistances. You have to pay for everything else and when you pay for everything else they will be up to par for the content they should be at. You cannot over level in Darkest Dungeon unless you are doing Radiant mode and bringing higher tier guys to lower level dungeons.

You can but gearing up your heroes and upgrading them cost quite a lot too. You could try to do a slumber party with 4 antiquarians to get some quick dosh. Look up the guide about it.
>>
>>381710976
You can. The lower the light level the better the loot, so if you're strapped for cash, just get a suicide squad of level 0s and send them into a place with no torches.

I couldn't get into this game. I really wanted to enjoy it cause the art style, rpg element, and the theme of the game is amazing. But the gameplay... was just lacking.
>>
>>381710993
No, it reduces the grind. You don't have to start from scratch if you get a bad wipe.
>>
How hard is modding? I assume it's not very difficult but i am concerned about packing it into a mod file or something to enable/disable at will. Want to unfuck trinkets and buff some skills i never use.
>>
>>381710976
Yes? And I acknowledged that once you outfitted your characters that:
>You have to pay for everything else and when you pay for everything else they will be up to par for the content they should be at.
So you cannot over do it since there are many restrictions to the game that don't allow you to say power up a single character and go into a dungeon solo.

Editing your skill is braindead easy. Look up some guide and you can easily edit the text file to change the multiplier and such. But modding a character sprite is a pain in the ass, because of how they compressed the sprite into different sections, it's nearly impossible to make a proper custom sprite.

Not sure about editing trinkets though.

This game is great for the first 6 or so hours, when everything is fresh and new. You're really digging the narrator's voice and the atmosphere. The gameplay is tough, but fair.

But at some point, probably around the time you start doing the exact same dungeons but on a higher difficulty, you will realize that this game isn't all that great. The novelty of the narrator has worn off after hearing the same lines over and over again. The dungeons are exactly the same, as is the gameplay, and the grind is starting to wear thin. It's getting boring to use another cannonfodder-tier team to grind the required gold/heirlooms to upgrade your shit. It's getting stale just running past 90% of the curios unless you have that one specific item in your inventory that can cleanse it.

DD has the death's door system. It doesn't matter how hard an enemy hits you no single blow can kill you.
It'll just drop you to death's door and any further damage will roll a check against your death blow resist.
Most people can usually heal at least one damage to avoid death and restart the cycle.
It's really hard to get people killed when you consider you have death's door and retreat available.

that's a pretty good descriptor actually

there's even Hamlet-management that mimics FTL's spaceship management

it's fairly light but still pretty cool in that the game lets you dictate where to spend resources

You can interpret it as madness overtaking you, or as seeing things how they REALLY are. I ascribe to the second theory, where what everyone sees is just an illusion and limitation of the mind. In reality, humans are lumpy eldritch spawn as well they just lack the unbearable knowledge necessary to see it.

Well if muh expertise in shitty loose story explanations are anything to go from Its a very lovecraftian story, very bleak. Your ancestor was either a projection of the HoD to trick you in or truly believed to his last moment, before being turned into the HoD, that fighting actually solves anything. There is supposedly some kind of connection between strong people dying and the god itself being born and you and your characters were the sacrifices made. So what you've basically done is mass ritual sacrifice until your characters were lured right in, you the heritor flees back, insane/suicidal because literally nothing matters, sending a letter to the next of kin.

So I've hit a wall I didn't expect to hit. I have a full 28 roster, with a lot of level 5 characters. Except I out level'd the content, unknowingly. I have 3 bosses to defeat but only have oddly leveled people to do it with that would die against the bosses, since they aren't optimal.

I've tried to take down the bosses twice and each time almost leads to a team wipe. How do I get around having to beat "weaker" bosses when I only have 5 level appropriate characters? I mean shit, I'm being punished for having strong guys in my roster. Only other option I could see is getting rid of my level 5 guys, and hiring a boss beating level 3-4 team, but that would take more work and hours.

Isn't this kinda bullshit? First time I have ever encountered this problem in any video games. Ever.

TL;DR
>Roster too strong
>level 3-4 bosses demand level 3-4 characters but ones I have can't beat bosses

Senpai, if that isn't the highest bullshit ever, then I don't know what is. Is there a mod or something I could do other than get rid of characters and to create a level 3-4 team? I have 3 bosses to beat so they run the risk of leveling.

>>
>>381729973
You should have known by then that they cant go to lower level dungeons. You did to much grinding and I can't see why you would grind out high level characters without fighting the medium level bosses.

Your only option is to get new characters and level them up to beat those bosses to progress in the game. I'm sure you can edit the radiant mode rule where higher level characters can go to lower dungeons. ask in /vg/ if that's possible but most importantly your image is correct.
>>
>>381730454
You only have yourself to blame. I really don't see how you got that far without learning a very apparent piece of the game's ruleset. Stop grinding, ditch the heroes with the worst set of quirks and move on. Learn from your mistakes because you alone made them.

Both are hella strong

Antiquarian is all about boosting survivability, she got a all party dodge buff, a forcing guard that gives good protection, a back shuffling skill, a very usefull -acc debuff and a generic blight and attack.

She lets you stack more money, and she can find antiques which you can stack in huge ammounts and cost alot of money.

Flagellant is downright broken how much of a powerhouse he is; he cant get a virtue but always gets only one affliction which boost his damage. can heal to half hp if he wants or healbomb someone else. Of top of that when he gets low health he gets even more damage.

Also another neat bonus if how everytime he hits deathdoor he will heal the other party members and instead of debuffing him, deathdoor buff his resistence and damage.

He can tank all he wants thanks to his 83% deathblow resistence

Not yet I would hold off if I were you. There is controversy with the amount of blood vials being distributed throughout missions. Not enough; so players are losing a lot of heroes to the crimson curse as the blood vials keep them alive. Some people have even wiped despite bringing a copious amount of vials on the crimson court missions.

Furthermore, they put in an annoying amount of grind just to get to the expansion content. Although this issue probably won't go away.

The lower-rarity ones aren't really all that good but the class specific rare ones help specialize your characters. Like the abom has a rare trinket that reduces the stress he generates to everyone at the cost of reduced max health. Useful if you want him to smash through everything in the dungeon without worrying too much about stress(You'll also be spending less turns destressing with a jester/HM), not so much at tanking bosses as your sole-frontline meatshield

Darkest dungeon is probably the best example of why a game's style is just as important as its substance. If darkest dungeon had a less cool style, no narrator, bad music, nobody would touch it because it's a terrible grind fest. But because it has that appealing aesthetic layer, it makes the game a lot more enjoyable.

It would be too easy if you can heal when he summons the eggs.

A good team is the Leper and the Occultist, debuff his damage into nothing while your other guys kill the eggs.

Flagellant, he is pretty good against the Baron.

A highwayman or MaA are great too thanks to the riposte

>>People actually think this game is hard
>>People think it's all rng
>>People think vestal's single target heal is better then aoe heal
>>People don't bring along stress management character in every group
>>People don't experiment with group comps
>>People don't use buffs
>> People don't burn down the back two then keep the tanks alive to draw out the fight in order to heal and relive stress
>>People underestimate stuns even though they are basically heals that non healers can do
>>People forget to unequip trinkets and reequip for each embark
>>People waste money and resources on stress relief in town instead of getting it free in dungeons
>>People think shorter trips are easier even though camping reduces massive amounts of stress
>>People don't throw away adventurers if they have too many afflictions
>>People don't get rid of the worst afflictions and don't lock in the best ones
>>People don't use the jester (seriously the crit one shots everything double jester is no joke)

Even on Stygian mode you can get out of dungeons with <10 stress on every character if you know what you are doing, and since you don't have to spend money on stress relief, you are rolling in cash. Current Stygian run I'm on I'm almost done at 60 weeks with two deaths. This game is not hard if you know how to play.

the actual dungeons are incredibly simplistic and all battles involve doing the the same skill rotation over and over again as decided by your comp. Doesn't help the majority of encounters require the same "take out backline stressers quickly, take out frontline tanks slowly so you can heal" strategy.

if you're not doubling up on roles, throw a highwayman, and if you feel the need for a healer, an occultist or a flagellant is the closest to a mobile healer than exists
>>
>>381745472
Exactly. I read these threads and wonder if these people even read the abilities that the characters have. The game makes it very easy to come up with good team comps. I recently got through a Stygian run with 4 deaths.

And then they call it "grindy". Absolutely false. If you understand basic inventory management and even take a few risks (Which isn't that big of a risk if you brought a competent party) you'll walk out of dungeons with more gold and antiques than you know what to do with.

The lesson to take away from all this is: /v/ clearly doesn't play games. It's the only way people can be this awful at the game, is that they've never played a turn-based game before it. That or they can't handle more than a few mechanics at once. Pitiful.

>>381748160
the only way i consider it grindy is the fact that you cant really gain both gold and antiques at the same time reliably, without sacrificing the other

you often throw away money at the expense of safety, either keeping extra provisions, or throwing away one for the other

its not grindy in the sense of grinding for better gear or items (iv gotten gear iv wanted long before getting anywhere near "done" with the town), but you often sacrifice progression in one direction, with progression in another
>>
>>381748363
if three people are healed the bear minimum of an aoe, it'll inevitably heal more than a single target

It's a dungeon crawler. This genre is literally defined by grinding

Anyone complaining that grinding exists or saying it doesn't exist is an idiot.

It's like argueing whether a racing game involves moving fast. One dumbass says "You don't have to move too fast, just cut corners!" Another dumb ass says he wants to win without moving fast and the game is bad because he can't.

the Ancestor didn't fuck anything up. He only fucked up the area around the Manor.

The Heart of the World would wake up regardless of his actions. He wanted to speed it up and did the "save the manor" bullshit to lure you in and make you sacrifice people to it(indirectly), but I guess in the end it was actually helpful since you clear some of the shit he did and continue the unending cycle of keeping inevitable doom at bay.
