Why is Gothic 2 so well loved? I'm working my way through Wizardry 8 now, might play this next.

I assume you're talking about the combat. It's only clunky in the beginning and it's supposed to be clunky, because your character has no idea how to handle a sword. When you train your fighting skills your attacks are more fluid, faster, and less clunky. And it's actually why Gothic's character progression is so good

Just put all your puts into strength and choose 1 or 2H weapons or just go dex. There are insane early game dex weapons, but I think strength weapons are better later game.

There's 1h, 2h, archer, crossbow, and mage builds

But you only put points in STR, DEX, and Mana, as well as training your sword skills and archery

There's also lots of other skills like pickpocket, sneaking, picking locks, forging weapons, alchemy, creating runes etc

You have to min max because unlike Morrowind for example you can't be good at everything, if you decide to go for 1h swords then you dont train 2h or magic at all because training becomes harder as you level up
