My dream would be a progression server, similar to some of what soe/daybreak has done with EQ (they've experimented with different progression methods) that eventually went into new content.
My dream within a dream related to that would be progression vanilla then new stuff, or vanilla->tbc then new stuff. I'd even be ok with going up to wrath. It really doesn't matter tho as none of those things are going to happen.
I could see official legacy servers happening eventually (possibly sooner than we think) as sub are so low right now, I'd also anticipate it being tied into some sort of package with a new xpac release. But I don't see anything that would justify them actually going back and re-tuning or adding new vanilla style content after naxx even tho that would be fun as fuck.

I feel like it's a given at some point but also a given that it would be done with least effort required.

Private servers are generally okay. They tend to have a lot of rough edges (occasional broken quests, etc), but the core game is generally functional. 99% of them collapse under their own weight within 6 months, or get too big for their own good and Blizzard shuts them down.

I'd say it's worth it to at least give private servers a shot though if you have never experienced Vanilla. It was a wild ride.

My friends and I made a point to have enough so that we could queue for a bg at 39, level up, train skills, and buy our mounts before the bg popped so we could ride around as 40s in a 39 bg. You didn't play when the game was new.
On my realm, ONE person had a confirmed mount for like two weeks before the second person got one. That first guy was an UD Warrior that sat in Org on that mount for hours just showing off.

When the game was young and they were adding new servers constantly, I always leapt to roll on a new realm and nobody ever got their mount quickly. Many people made 60 before getting their normal mount.

Because EVERYONE was saving for their mounts. There were no buyers on the market. Everyone was trying to sell so they could save up enough for their mounts. Only after some top-end guilds had their shit sorted did they start accumulating tons of gold from their dungeon runs and begin playing the market.

wrath private servers are really high quality. i can recommend dalaran-wow, played there for a few months last year after the TBC server died. really well coded overall, pretty much everything is like it was back in the day on blizzard servers. i cleared the first three raid tiers there, had very much fun in ulduar especially. quit because the people i played with quit and i wasnt really interested in the then-current raid (trial of the crusader) anyway.

I played the rare Destrolock Tailor.

Between Seduce, Netherweave Net, and Fear juggling, I got to freecast Incinerates and SBs all day. It pissed off melee stun specs so bad because they couldn't actually land any hits to trigger their RNG stuns.

I'd macro seduce them, run to midrange, nuke em down while netting them, counting my DR CD in my head, then Shadowfury into another Seduce after Immolate fell off, or Fear/Death Coil.

The spec was seriously underrated and wholly superior to SL/SL imo.

Forgot to mention, the VWer talents and resummoning were for Sacrifice. While questing or if you were expecting to fight a Rogue, you could Sac your Void even while stunned, negating ALL of his opening damage, then instantly resummon a second VWer to Sac or a Succy to Seduce with. Usually went with the VWer and used DC+Fear+Shadowfury to blow the fuckers up. Because they'd usually Vanish or Blind and try to reset anyhow. Might as well have a VWer ready to soak the next opener.

Warlocks actually needed that free mount. We paid more than any other class in the game per level up, because we had a shitton of spells to upgrade and each and every demon had spells to upgrade. Even economizing and buying only the absolutely necessary upgrades (if you were lucky enough to know what those were) would leave you far too poor to buy a mount. Warlock was THE most expensive class, aside from perhaps warriors simply because they died a lot during leveling and had to pay mail/plate repairs.

Yes. You really had to pick and choose what you wanted, even as a tailor/enchanter I was constantly running out of gold just from updating my main spells and the super important ones for my main demons.

And then my friend found the pattern for beastslaying +2, and I made a small fortune selling that red glowing weapon enchant. It was a simpler time, when all folks wanted was a glowing sword. The reason Vashjir didnt work for alot of people is because of the narrow FOV. Up on the surface, you don't need to look up and down, you see quite alot around your character and there is no seaweed around which you have to navigate your camera. What is enough for flat ground surface just isn't good enough for navigating in a 3D plane without looking around all the time.
