If you're having trouble hitting things, sure. In fact, I'm fairly sure the extra damage you'll get for more accuracy (especially with a lot of attacks) would outweigh the extra base damage you get from a regular lightsaber, so feel free.

You really don't need that much extra training to just point the blade away from you and block whatever attacks are coming your way, especially if you have formal weapon training beforehand. Now that I think of it, the two male Sith lords in KOTOR 2 are probably the most powerful Sith portrayed so far.

Sion is literally unkillable unless you convince him he wants to die, because he can just reassemble his body parts and keep them moving through sheer willpower fuelled by his sith angst.

Nihilus is literally a walking black hole of souls that eats entire planets just to take the edge off his hunger, the only reason anyone nearby him is even close to "alive" is because he wants them to be. The only reason he dies at all is because the exile's own gimmick perfectly (and uniquely) counters his. Against anyone else he'd be unstoppable. Even his spaceship is a zombie.

Honestly the length of the blade vs the length of the hilt make these probably less effective than a sword. It'd be really awkward to block with those since you can't actually block anywhere near your forearm with the same arm, you'd have to use the other hand to do it.

All those soldiers Vader was facing were just hillbillies with guns. The soldiers that killed the jedi were highly trained marksman clones of the best bounty hunter in the galaxy. Also, during order 66 the clones caught the jedi completely unawares. A lot of jedi died to shots from behind without ever igniting their lightsaber.
