It added tons of extra combo possibilities and other options and even got implemented for the SF characters in Tekken and Smash, yet SFV dropped it.

Sorry, but it sounds like you don't know how Focus Attacks work at all. You don't have to do the entire animation, you don't have to commit to the attack, and while it does absorb a single hit that damage isn't permanent unless you get hit right after it.

focus cancel was a good mechanic but charging focus attacks were stupid. It just made the zoning/poking game more tedious and landing a focus attack was always a matter of your enemy fucking it up instead of you being skillful.

You do have to commit to the whole thing.

The only way to cancel focus is to dash forward or backwards, you can't cancel into super or ultra. You have to wait the whole thing out.
