Hey /b/ so i was wondering if buying a cheap 20 dollar vr was worth it, take pic related for example
I have videos that i can play on my phone using the vr. I dont need the gyro function just video alone. I bought a cardbox vr before but it didnt feel immersive and was very uncomfortable.I was wondering if i were to just use a vr like this just to view videos would it give me arround the same experiense as say the oculus rift? Note that again i dont need any gyro type of functions simply viewing experience. And what are the differences between the cheap and expensive vr when watching a porn vid or some gayming vid
>>
I want a headset so I can use it as a monitor so I can do away with monitors completely, don't really care about the vr aspect
I just wanna play fighting games on it

All 'mobile vr' is the same, none of it is worth your time. Just playing stereo video in an untracked HMD is shit you will use to fap once and then probably literally bin the HMD. It is not the 'personal 3D theater' experience you are imagining. You DO need head tracking, and not just gyro rotational tracking but full positional tracking.

There are going to be like a half-dozen of the new 'standalone' inside-out tracking HMDs which will be in the $200-400 range, in the next 12 months, and Valve has 'SteamVR 2.0' stuff to announce within the next few months as well.

B-but anon i dont give a shit about head tracking. I just want to fap to my pern. So tell me what is the actual difference between 600 and 20 when watching a video that does not require tracking?

wait for the next gen. none of the gen 1s are quite at the level of adequate 'monitor replacement', yet, in display quality or ergonomics. virtual monitor applications are like having a 1024x768 virtual screen that you have to stay within a few feet of. next-gen will have much improved resolutions (4k per eye instead of CV1s 1200p) which will probably bump that up to proper 1920x1080 virtual screens. and all the next-gen is going to be completely natively wireless from day one, which is enormous even if you only ever use them seated. being tethered SUCKS.

it isn't a matter of 'the next step up is worth taking', it's that the lowest level is just not worth wasting your time on at all. you say you've tried cardboard - it is the exact same as that. all mobile VR, except for some of the very state-of-the-art stuff in the newest google phones, is exactly the same, from $5 cardboard to $130 gearVR. what makes it anything more is positional tracking.

SO THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN VIEWING EXPERIENCE OR VIDEO QUALITY. MEANING IF I WANT TO WATCH A PERNO VIDEO IT DOES NOT MATTER IF I HAVE A 3202382393283490 DOLLAR VR OR A 20 DOLLAR VR . SO PLEASE TELL ME WHY IS IT NOT WORHT IT? WHY WOULD I BUY A 600 VR JUST SO I CAN WATCH VIDEOS WHERE I WONT EVEN USE HEADTRACKING!?!??!?!?!?
>>
>>381644772
i'm not saying to buy a real VR system to watch shitty stereo vids. i'm saying that watching those shitty static stereo vids in an HMD is an equally awful experience regardless of what HMD you use.
>>
>>381645120
Anon clearly your talkign to someone who doesnt know alot about vr so please make some more sense. Are you trying to say watching stereo vids in a 600 buck vr would give you a better experience assuming you cannot use head tracking or gyro?. if so why?Does a expensive vr support better video quality or.. idk what is the reason anon i should not buy a crappy 20 buck fap view so i can see some titties close up and instead buy a 600 dollar vr to watch that same fucking video that does NOT support head tracking
>>
>>381645374
>watching those shitty static stereo vids in an HMD is an equally awful experience regardless of what HMD you use

go ahead and knock yourself out with a cheap inert plastic shell 'mobile VR' HMD, if you really need to see for yourself. again - if you've tried them on cardboard, you know what to expect. it will be very much the same experience on anything else.

I have DK2 and I tried Samsung VR in a store. Phone VR is fucking terrible compared to actual PC VR, don't do it.
