Literally the worst plot in the entire series, with a MC cast so wooden and lifeless that there's absolutely nothing to be done with any of them. Lyn was created at the end of production only to be a tutorial character for Western audiences, so it's understandable the plot forgets she exists, but Eliwood and Hector being absolutely static characters is pathetic. Nevermind Ninian who spends half the game either unconsious or amnesiac, that 2/3 of the chapters are meaningless filler battles or that the story constantly shoves "I could kill you... BUT I WON'T!" nonsense down your throat.

An epic and engaging story for the ages.

If you've played 7 you'll see it's worse.

Birthright's plot was largely harmless and Revelation's was kind'a meh. Conquests was bad, but it wasn't bad in the same ways 7's was bad.

Conquests was ambitious and stupid, it had way too much crap it tried to jam into a story and not enough time or space to do it. If it had legitimately spent the time fleshing out the characters, their motivations and causes, it could have worked, but instead everything's waved away or put down to convenience.

7's plot could be written on a fucking jam cracker, it's full of plotholes, it's ridiculous in it's stupidity and the villains are so unbelievably cartoonish it's embarrassing.

Honestly, I get this feeling they're gonna try to be radically different this time and get rid of the grid format completely. They might even try to incorporate dungeon crawling again and try to expand on that. They'll probably try to take advantage of HD graphics to make really fancy looking character models and devise a new gameplay system that lets you see them up close most of the time instead of only seeing them from a zoomed out overhead view. Likewise, they're going to try and emphasize characters more, but in Nu-IS fashion, this is going to be more between battle stuff like everything My Castle had and more. And instead of portraits, they'll just have close ups of the 3D models speak, and have the camera focuses straight on towards their face if they're speaking with the Avatar unit (because that's obviously sticking)

I know this is a whole lot of assumption, but it's the kind of mindset I can see them going with for a new console Fire Emblem. Only time will tell if they do go for such a direction, and if said direction will be at all good.

This type of logic is downright stupid. I mean, for starters you paint dumbass shit like "The magic triangle" as some intrinsic FE thing when it was present in what, 2 games? It was never fun and never added anything, you might as well complain about them getting rid of Fatigue for 6, or how they got rid of Battle Saves in 12, or how they finally, finally, FINALLY got rid of Fog of War.

Fates Conquest was, from a purely gameplay perspective the best in the entire series. It had the best mechanics, some of the best maps and was one of the most challenging games in the entire lot. Corrin, Robin and Kris aren't like Joker from Persona, or other nameless, faceless self insert characters. They had their own characters, their own personalities and decisions, they're far more akin to someone like Cloud or Squal from Final Fantasy, you can name them, but they fit their own role in the plot. Hell, the reason everyone complains about Corrin is because they didn't like his personality.

Having the ability to name a character and change his class is fun, it means you don't have to play as just a generic Sword Lord like almost every other game in the series, it can still have the titular Lord character (like it did with Chrom) but you can be a Mage, a General, a Pegasus Knight, whatever you want, that's fun.

These are different sides that people appreciate the Fire Emblem series for, so when Fates comes and does one of these things much better, but another of these things much worse, there's obviously going to be a hard split in who prefers Fates over Awakening and who prefers Awakening over Fates. Likewise, Echoes manages to fall short in the aspects Fates accelled at, while significantly improving on the aspects both Fates and Awakening handled poorly. It's just this war of different tastes trying to call their own preferences superior over the others like how Sonic has different fandoms all trying to kill each other.

And yes I like my FE games to have any depth to them, any variety of win conditions, rather than the same fucking seize or defeat all enemies shit we get every game now. Shadow Dragon was even worse in this respect, you basically have to play these games on Hard or higher difficulty to get any challenge.

Robin was not a bad character, pretty bland but far from the worst lord. You're really going to defend Corrin though? Now that is an actual fucking shit character. Self-insert Mary Sue. Everyone loves him and he/she's a complete pussy. I won't pretend Fates was the worst game ever made but its story was absolute shit.

It's pretty sad to have to compare to Cloud Strife, I mean yeah Cloud was kind of generic but he had an arc, he had a far better personality than Corrin. Robin I'd say is a much worse character too if you're comparing to just FF7 Cloud, but that is at all arguable. Corrin a shit.
