Final fantasy tactics advance 2.
I'd say Tactics original but getting anywhere with that fucking god awful job point grinding is a nightmare and the fact enemies scale with you can fuck straight off.
I've never been a fan of final fantasy games. I played 7, 10, 10-2, 15 and every ivalice related game including Vagrant Story (which I shamelessly dropped because I didn't like the combat).
Final Fantasy just isn't good. Every single other JRPG I've played has always been better than any FF game.

I started replaying the earlier ones, since it's been fucking years since I've played them. I'm up to 6 right now.

The Steam versions are an enigma.

On one hand, yes, the map tiles and character sprites are butt-ugly.

But on the other hand, the enemy and boss sprites look fantastic.

Best versions are a bit arguable, they each have their ups and down, and some people don't like the 3d remakes (notably me, for FF3 I prefer the NES version, and for FF4 the PSP complete edition).

But whatever you do, avoid the PS1 versions. And if going with GBA+emulation, get music fix patches.

For 5 I only played the snes version with fantranslation (before the GBA version existed). But I believe GBA+patch is best version. Same for 6, but I find the bad original translation hilarious so I always prefer the snes one.

My tastes change faster than I can play these games, so it's hard to pick a "best". My top picks are 6, 7, 9, and 11.

Seems pretty cut and dry, right? Not.
In Japanese she says she just liked him and that they never dated. Then later on in the game you talk to Zack's parents and find out he sent a letter home talking about his girlfriend, which means either Aeris lied to you or Zack exaggerated. Either way you interpret it, it's a detail completely missing from the English version.
You can make a mistranslation easy to understand, it doesn't mean you're understanding what was originally written.
