They lucked out with 2 because it found its own new group of fans that was enough to keep it going even though they lost most of their original consumer base. They must of looked at that and let it get to their head because they changed the game even MORE and alienated fans of the first AND second games.

I'm willing to bet that Sega is sitting there and saying, "Look, this is what happens when you design exclusively for a single platform" in reference to how Bayo, Valk Chronicles and Vanquish are more or less pure profit by porting to the PC. I feel like this ends RTS development from Sega, which if you think about it, is the only competition in the genre for Blizzard.

Even with a 17.5% labor cost tax credit for making video games in the Relic location, it still got fucking burnt.

One day I'm going to actually run into someone who worked on this thing and will have lost their fucking job because this more or less ends Relic at its current staffing levels and ask them what the fuck happened. It will be an interesting story. They're just going to get stripped down to a porting company by Sega with a skeleton crew getting by off sweet tax credits until they just get shutdown because they found some random company in China who will port for even cheaper even taking tax credits into account.

People are fucking starved for a good RTS. Absolutely starved for one, and there's not one to be seen. Companies forget that RTS players by and large want fun campaigns not eSports. eSports arise when people who love the base game have a desire to git gud and test their mettle online, designing a game to be eSports first and an RTS second is killing RTS.

Because it's an ass backwards way to design a game. Most people, the vast majority, will not play at a high level, let alone eSport level. When you balance and design a game for 0.1% of players, the other 99.9% are going to find fault with the game.

I really enjoyed DoW 1 and 2, played them as single player games. I bought almost all the dlc they made for the games.

Bought DoW3 at launch after looking forward to it for months.

It looked ugly.
It wasn't fun to play.
They forced you to swap faction, you couldn't play as one.
The story was poop.
Pandering to social justice (minor complain in the grand scheme but still)
The campaign was awful.
The tutorial missions gave an insanely awful first impression.
The story cut-scenes were cheaply made and boring to look at.
Refunded it at the 90 min mark.

I watched a let's play to spoil the whole game after refunding it to make sure I wouldn't be tempted to buy it again at a later date.

There is pretty much nothing they can do to this game to make me buy it again, it's like battleborn. There is no way they can do enough work on it to make the bad things good (costs too much and would take too long) and it's left bad taste in peoples mouths at this point anyway.

As was said above, the sad part is that the publishers won't understand why the game did so bad.

DoW3 died because its a shit game from ground up. They removed every single crucial aspect from the previous titles in favor of pandering to a nonexistent esport crowd.

The most confusing thing about that is that this is Relic we're talking about, who in the past knew exactly how to nail the Warhammer feel like nobody else. Space Marine as a game was fairly repetitive and resoundingly average, but I enjoyed the hell out of it because as Astartes Simulator it was damn near perfect even down to the sound of Titus' footsteps.

Plus the whole deal with Dark Crusade Vs. Soulstorm. SS is mechanically better than DC in some significant ways, but because DC nailed the setting and SS bungled it horribly you tend to see people proclaiming DC as the best DoW game - purely on the strength of how well it captured the essence of the 40k universe with its characters and locations.

40k is 100% style over substance in everything it does, and that's what the people who buy 40k games are after. I want to play a Warhammer game with all the funkiness that entails; if I wanted some finely tuned gameplay masterpiece I'd go to a different series because I know it's damn near impossible to have both at the same time.

DoW 2 I didn't enjoy as much but it had a strong singleplayer campaign and I still thought it was pretty good.

DoW 3 I have 3 hours in and i bought it day one. For me what completely killed my will to play was when I realized how utterly worthless basic units were. When I watched a huge army of space marines just melt to an AoE ability I just stopped playing.

Sega does not operate as a single monolithic company, for better or worse.

Sega Europe are one of the biggest PC publishers and they're not going to abandon PC because of one failure. Remember, they own Football Manager, they own Endless Space and they own Total War.

They will probably push them to create something else other than Dawn of War.

(Also, DoW3 will probably sell way more copies once it's been discounted - PC games are less front-loaded and European/PC gamers are way more price-conscious than their console counterparts)

I just pirated it and it is so bland, rehashed and actively worse than both 1 and 2. They completely removed cover, except for in these fucking boxes, your 'Elites' can take on the same as half your full fucking force, the missions are bland, you HAVE to play as the other two races each fucking mission (I.e. mission 1 - Spesh muhreens, then Orks, then Space Elves, Marines again, etc) which kind of fucks with my flow. It feels like they tried to copy Warcraft 3 but failed in making the characters interesting and the story compelling.

It's just such a fucking shame, man. Even DoW II was great in my opinion, not as good as 1 was at the time but this is just shit.

It has no turrets, no generators and no mines and depending on which faction you play DoW3 has a few less options on top of that

I found the averageness to be the game's saving grace ironically. It came out when we were swarmed with over the shoulder cover based shooters so something that felt like it was a third person shooter straight out of 2003 but with prettier graphics was a nice change of pace.

Online was Eldar only because they had this nasty combo no faction could beat before the patches hit. And everyone used it.
You were either playing Eldar or listening to Gaybriel Anjelos' manly voice in that short-ass campaign.

DoW1 was a pretty shit game at release.

Could easily be far better than 1 with 1 or 2 expansion answering some issues like the lack of interesting upgrades in general or weapon choices (like flame and plasma for tacticals) and overall a lack of units due to most being elites.
Oh and good maps of course, they suck even for the game mode this game came with.

I won't bother though, i just can't enjoy RTS anymore, too much work i could just put in far more entertaining gendras like fighting games.
