Not true.

The first half of the game is some of the best singleplayer FPS around, it just falls off a cliff once you meet the oracle. It's slower, but it was designed for a controller afterall.

The things that really stuck with me from Halo were the set pieces, the music, the sense of exploration and discovery and to a lesser extent the story. The gameplay was certainly just "okay" special but I still loved it because everything else was so good.

I think the fucking music score was great.

the problem with Halo/Halo's legacy is that besides that abortion of Halo 2 for Windows Live/Vista, the only PC release was HALO:CE -edition (not counting the 343-forge editor for windows 10).

Microsoft fucked up there, I kind of liked Halo for windows, it's engine was nice, though I wish the playercount had been higher for multiplayer games

agreed with your first point, but this is just bait.

games like the original Rainbow-Six, Ghost Recon, along with a few others in the "tactical"/"realistic" shooter genre did it much better,
COD was outclassed however by the later Red Orchestra mods for UT2k4, which basically were able to create situations similar to COD's scripted campaigns in a more organic multiplayer scenario.

Narrative wise I thought it was a good game that set up a lot of breathing room for excellent writers like Eric Nylund, plus it gave us quite a bit of excellent music.

Not on the same boat as the lot of you with the latter half of the game though, I don't mind back tracking through those levels. I enjoy the familiar space and seeing everything deteriorating into chaos around you, it's fun and makes it feel as if you're rushing to escape every situation.

Halo: ODST was the weakest narratively speaking out of 1, 2, 3 & even Reach.

The forced love story between Buck & Dare was fucking cringe worthy. They were watching Earth (their last stronghold / colony) being glassed and all they could think of was whether or not they were still dating.

Best part of the game was when you were by yourself with The Rookie.

this. So tired of faggots pretending its the best story when its basically a generic TBS original series, especially compared to the more dramatic trailer for it.

>>381623495
Hell, I wouldn't even say that Reach kept up that tone. The beginning of the game they were pretty casual about the Covenant knowing where Reach was, if we're talking book lore they'd have the entire regional fleet on point at the first sight of a Covenant presence.

Shit's no joke, they glass most human planets within hours of discovering them.
>>
>>381623313
Why I only love Halo 1-3's campaign.
>>
>>381623313
>The forced love story between Buck & Dare was fucking cringe worthy. They were watching Earth (their last stronghold / colony) being glassed and all they could think of was whether or not they were still dating.

I take it you've never been around codependent narcissists? Their entire identity and sense of self worth relies on precariously balancing all of their bullshit against eachother. So when the shit hits the fan and knocks one of the tent poles over, the entire thing comes crashing down, and they revel in it, despite making a huge fuss over it.

It was great writing for the characters that they were; the boot fit. If you're going to hire high budget actors, might as well rip into the sort of people they tend to play.
>>

I could believe spartans being stoic about encountering a covenant scouting party on reach as opposed to "ah fuck!" reaction. What I cant buy is any type of soldier making casual jokes and being flippant and gossiping about old relationships when earth is being invaded
>>
>>381623180

>>381623842
I haven't, so I can't say I'm familiar with the personality type. But you have to think contextually about their situation. This is Earth, their last planet that they have. If it falls, humanity is pretty much done for, for the long haul that is.

There are more impractical characters in the Halo lore that have gone jaw down from the situation they were in. I'm a faggot for saying this but it just breaks the emotional weight of it for me considering the ad campaign they were trying to run for it. Even the music was moody / depressing.

>>381624196
Really? The most expected reaction I'd say was from Jorge, he was pissed off that they had found the planet. Most Spartan IIs considered it their home given the fact they were raised / trained there with the rest of the Spartan IIs.

It's bad news for everyone if the Covenant have Reach in their nav data, that's their main Military HQ. Stoic is fine, but I mean tactically they were too casual in response.

>What I cant buy is any type of soldier making casual jokes and being flippant and gossiping about old relationships when earth is being invaded

>>381624449
>ad campaign
Dude never give any weight to any ad campaign. See Halo 2, or Halo 3's Believe for related examples. It's all bullshit fake hype.

ODST was supposed to be a $30 DLC and Microsoft forced Bungie to make it a $60 full release out of pure greed. It was just supposed to be a creative offshoot to fill the void of the cancelled Halo movie.

I agree that them getting upset is stupid and impractical, but honestly it's part of what made it so real. If you're talking emotions, it worked. People are flawed and selfish at the worse of times. If it's the end of the world, you'd feel hopeless enough to just air what you really thought of people. Wouldn't matter in the end.

He's that guy who voices Buck. He was a fairly popular TV actor back in the day who made his name on a Joss Whedon show. He now rides that pony to the bank playing quiptastic characters in games. That wisecracking robot man in the trailers for Destiny 2 is played by him.

>>381625241
Call of Duty Infinite Warfare
>>
>>381625032
Yes, also I believe they dedicated significant money to trying to get the Mac version of Halo to work as well. The reason it wasn't working was because it was way too ambitious and a shitload of assets and stuff got scrapped. There's no official figure that I can find on the budget, and many people think the big figure that floats around was mostly marketing money and had nothing to do with the actual game's budget.
>>
How come its so hard for 343 to fill in the void made by Bungie? They seem to think that no matter what they do if it still has spartans in it, its Halo
>>
>>381624915
Aw shit, Anon. I'll even put them in chronological order for you.

The Fall Of Reach, The Flood (Halo One novelized with some Covenant perspective, pretty great), and First Strike. I've yet to read the rest of what he's written, I've heard Ghost Of Onyx is pretty good.

>>381624935
Fair enough. Never knew it was originally meant as DLC, have a source on that? Don't need it but I'd like to read more about it. On the same boat with this guy. >>381625296

Yeah, but what ruins it is that it's badly written characters. So while it may be realistic, I just don't care about the characters and rather I care more about the larger scale events that are happening. Buck could have been in the city while it was being glassed and I could have cared less.

>>381625338
Damn, a voice actor really has that much influence with the industry?

>>381625552
This is how I know you're trolling, or just haven't played those games. They're extremely different aside from the fact that you shoot people.

>MARTY O’DONNELL
>The plan for the expansion pack was to put it out cheaply in the spring of 2009, as we’d finished it the winter before, and to under-promise but over-deliver. People would think, wow, for a $30 expansion pack, this is almost as good as a full-fledged release. We had Halo 3 in the title so everybody knew it was an expansion pack, and for an entire year of talking about it to the press we’d say, “Yeah, this is a campaign expansion,” and tell them to expect some extra fun in the Halo 3 engine.
>They looked at their 2009 Christmas release schedule for the Xbox and they came back and told us it had to be our major Halo release for the 2009 Christmas season. We were on our knees, begging them not to do that. Now we were over-promising, with the threat of under-delivering. It was the opposite of what we wanted. It’d be a gem at $30. But as a major release, it was going to get dinged. And it was.
>>
>>381625581
I read the halo books, anon. i like them a lot and was just wondering if you'd read anything Nylund has written aside from his Halo stuff.

PS- Nathan Fillion doesn't really influence the industry, he's just been typecast into playing the same character in every game he's in, and that character is annoying. He's the game equivalent of "Fuck it let's just put Chris Pratt in it" except he's got about 10% of the charm.
>>
>>381625573

>There was no way we would be able to build everything for the story, which worried us. We were up against a very hard deadline. So I floated the idea of reusing some of the environments—and we shamelessly reused at least three or four, played through backwards and modified a little bit. But we really needed to do it

>PAUL BERTONE
>And the designers worked really hard to make each area unique. Take the two Pillar of Autumn levels, in the air and after it’s crashed. The artists worked their asses off to make that look and feel different in almost no time. It was like, you're going to have like three weeks to take that initial geometry, crack it open a little bit, make it look like the fight is done, like a whole side of the ship got blown out. >halo is supposed to be an arena shooter

Have you actually played a Halo game?
>>
Halo is my favorite game behind Mario 64 and donkey kong country. It's not that the game was super amazing, but it's the fact it gave me a social life. My circle of friends stayed up God knows how many nights playing halo. I still get goosebumps thinking about waiting for the weekend and deciding whose house would we stay at and have a lan party.

Go ahead and mock me. Halo wasn't my first fps, goldeneye was, but halo introduced me into the social aspect of games. I'll be 29 in July. Using the "baby's first fps" meme no longer applies here. The game is 16 years old. If you're using that to somehow brag then you need to get off 4chan because you're probably in your mid 30s at least. Hell, I need to get off but here I am sadly. Admit it, /v/, only a shit posting contrarian would crap on Halo now...or you're way too old to be on this board.

People BORN the year Halo came out will be 18 in less than 3 years time

How d'ya feel?

Don't worry bud, I had the same experience.

Met a lot of people through Bungie, including a few of Bungie's guys themselves.

Didn't get on with all of them, and don't talk to most now, but the game and its community took me from being a wimpy shit that wouldn't dare pick up a phone to someone willing to fly overseas solo to PAX to meet online friends.

26 in July, and miss the golden Halo days frequently.

>Thinking shooters need to be stupid fast like quake and unreal
I want this meme to die already. Halo may be down syndrome shit but speed like quake is pure autism

>Halo campaign
>good

It is just recycling the same fucking hallways over and over again, and most missions involve backtracking. It was fucking horrible, it was the reason I stopped buying games at full price because the demo was the only good part.

The 8-year-old squeakers screaming into the microphone during Halo 3 are likely posting in this very thread right now.

It's like something from a japanese dev now

Every 3D game that is 15+ years old feels slow now. If you played it at release you wouldn't think it was nearly as much of a problem.
