It's because there's no real guaranteed way to get the back pin or the front pin to spin to the opposite side; they'll hit each other and it'll fuck up your attempt to have the pins cross the lanes.

There's just enough space outside either pin for the ball to hit the pin into the other pin. If you spin it (say, counterclockwise) and hit the 10 pin, you will knock the pin downward and it will bounce to the left. This is your best chance at the 7-10.
The rarer and more luck dependant solution is to just hope that one pin bounces off the back wall just right to come back hit the other.

note that in a greek church split, there are multiple pins on either side of the split
my guess is that professional bowlers, even with their ability, are incapable of hitting either side of the split hard enough for a pin to spin/ricochet across the gap between the pins and deliver enough momentum to knock over all the pins on the other side that did not get hit by a bowling ball

2 problems with that. Your off hand typically doesn't have the same muscle memory and training as your dominant hand. Most bowling leagues don't let you bowl with your off hand; you generally have to designate which hand you'll use. This is because a lot of pick ups are much easier if the ball is coming from a different arc. Oddly enough, there is no rule against simply spinning the ball in the other direction but most people find that harder than using your off hand and it puts every bone in your wrist through hell

I said near impossible. It is possible but so improbable it never happens. No pro bowl or really any bowler will actually try to pick that up unless it means win or lose.

I have been bowling in leagues for a decade now. I've seen dozens of 300s. In that I have seen a single person pick it up and it was total blind luck.
