I have tried plenty of times to get into fallout 1 and 2 but i just cant stand the gameplay.
Everything about it is just to random and i cant stand rng gameplay. I always hear people say you have so much freedom but you really dont and pretty much have to play the game a certain way with a specific build. Can someone explain to me the appeal of the first 2 fallout games.

>>
You can beat Fallout 2 with any build. And I mean literally any build. Git gud senpai.
>>
>>381610787
the appeal is for people that aren't retarded
>>
The first hour/2 was absolute hell for me. Then I picked up a gun and some ammo from a rat dungeon and things picked up fast
>>
The games are set up so casuals can get power armor early and never have to worry about dying
>>
New Vegas was my first Fallout ever and I absolutely loved it but I never could get into 1, 2 and 3 for some reason
>>
Fallout 3 isn't Cannon and new Vegas was the true sequel of 1 and 2
>>
>>381611358

No you dingus, it's Fallout Tactics that isn't canon.

Just because you don't like the game doesn't invalidate it's lore.
>>
>>381610873
Fallout 2 is kinda lame because your options are literally spear, throw spear, or punch throughout that entire first part. That being said, that's an optional quest and if you didn't slap up yourself some melee fighting ability or unarmed you shouldn't be doing it. the reward is healing items which you don't really need if you're not going to be fighting anything anyway.
>>
>>381610787
The world I guess? Fallout 1 was pretty heavy into the Mad-Max "the apocalypse happened not too long ago" vibe, which a lot of people fucking love.
People say you can beat the game doing damn near anything with any build, but they often fail to neglect that you're gonna need to have either played the game once or twice before to know the in and outs of it, or have the wiki and a guide open the first time around for tips and such, which lead to spoilers. If you don't do either and are playing completely blind with 0 Intelligence or Agility, chances are you'll have a bad time.
Honestly, if you can't enjoy the combat and the general story and world of the game ain't enough to keep you involved, just drop it.
The original Fallouts did not age well at all.

I actually enjoyed both 3 and New Vegas to an extent and played 1 and 2 after

1:
Good
>Very good soundtrack, dark ambient, I think
>Weapons feel powerful even if isometric
>Getting stronger weapons, armour feels rewarding
>Master and Unity are relatively well written for unjoinable protagonists
>Variety of dialogue options
>Challenging before you get better weapons
>Build is important
>Wide range of enemies
Bad
>AI is horrendous, jesus
>Companions are awful as an extension.
>Inventory management is a pain in the ass
>UI is also awful, have to tell the game when you want out of combat
>Too many glitches, I had to get third party programs just to get Hardened Power Armour after an NPC wouldn't speak to me for no reason
>A lot of empty or useless locations, little reason to return
>Very easy to completely invalidate older equipment
>Item weight isn't clearly indicated, you can spend ages trying to drop and pick up stuff to make room for something

I haven't completed Fallout 2 yet but Fallout 1 just feels like an inferior Baldur's Gate to me, still decent, but mechanically and content wise, inferior.
>>
>>381611358
How is 3 supposed to pick up directly where 2 left off if it takes place on the other side of the country. Seriously, people only hate 3 because they make comparisons with 4.
>>

The other great thing about Fo1 is how "easy" it makes it to be an evil character. Which is to say, the game presents a bunch of compelling opportunities for you to do bad things for the sake of your vault. Water Caravans charging you 2000 caps to supply V13? It'd be easier to work for Decker than to earn money the "honest" way.

In fallout 1 you need 10 agility or the game is crazy unfair. 10 perception helps to. There are like 5 sidequest and no way to level up other than just walking around killing people. After i got the waterchip i was level 8 and barely even killed the mutants at the watershed Vendors dont resupply, small guns is mandatory early game. I have 100 small guns and still miss hits, im level 16 and have power armor with a plasma rifle and even if i get far in a battle a super mutant can just randomly crit hit me and im dead instantly. Game is awful.
>>
>>381613747
Yes he did. His supermutants were sterile, and he didn't even know
>>
>>381613798
Make everyone a supermutant then. If there are no conflicts, there are no deaths. You get to live forever as immortal demigods.
>>
>>381613790
What perks/traits did you take? 10 AGI/PER isn't remotely mandatory unless you're a shitter. Most end-game combat is completely avoidable prior to a few Centaurs in the Cathedral.

Name one supermutant who has died of old age.
>>
You know those games that are carried by atmosphere, world building, setting, plot, lore, and general shit like that while only having mediocre gameplay? That's Fallout 1/2 in a nutshell.
>>
>>381614187
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence
>>
>>381614249
You made the claim supermutants can die of old age; the burden of proof rests on you. Since you have no evidence to back up your claims, I win.
>>
>>381614214
It reminds me of VTMB. I don't even consider the gameplay in that game if it requires any type of combat.
>>
Anyone else read that Fallout 1 novelization? I was 300 hundred words long, but it was a great read.

Ghouls live a long time and Marcus is still kicking in New Vegas so they likely have long lifespans thanks to FEV

>>381614350
That's... exactly the opposite of what happened. >>381613939 was the first post mentioning super mutant invincibility. It's likely your post. the burden of proof would be on >>381613939 to prove that they are immortal. As far as my memory of the lore is, They're very long lived.
>>
>>381614641
This. If they lived forever, the fact that they're sterile wouldn't have been such a big deal.
>>
>>381610787
>Nu-Vegas players

Yeah you're right.
>>
>>381614641
I said thar supermutants are immortal to time and that thanks to the Unity the inner conflict that is responsible for most humans death would be nullified because all mutants would be united in one nation. Thus, no wars to make mutants kill each other. Most creatures aren't strong enough to be a threat to them, so by taking away death by disease, old age and injuries, you have a race that will survive for thousands of years with the same members.
>>
>>381614820
The Master wanted to perpetuate the species. Rendering your new species completely sterile is a step backwards, but I think he overreacted. Mutants could have survived longer than most human civilizations on the same generation.
>>
>>381614875
But there's just no proof behind that logic. We don't know if their lifespans are into the thousands, or even just 200 years. We don't know the timetable in which mutants age. And we know there is a level of intelligence in some mutants, which could in theory cause a schism or split in ideology.
>>
>>381612001
People hate 3 because Bethesda can't into Fallout.
>>
>>381615085
All mutants we've seen are in their physical and mental prime, at least compared to when they first turned. There's no mental degradation like with the ghouls, except for the Nightkin but those are affected by an external factor to the FEV.
>>
>>381614875
Super Mutants don't really fight each other much like humans do. There's like a heirarchy with Nightkin at the top and retards at the bottom but they don't generally fight one another.
>>
>There are people who think VaultBoy is the Fallout mascot
Fucking Bethesda
>>
>>381615249
Forgot to add; FEV affected cells repair themselves as fast as they die out; that's immortality right there.
>>
>>381613790
>a super mutant can just randomly crit hit me and im dead instantly
probably the shittiest part of the game. 200+ damage out of nowhere.

wooow
>>
>>381611434
Are you retarded? Literraly in Klamath you can get a pipe rifle and a 10mm pistol. In the den if you kill flick you get multiple 44 magnums and a hunting rifle
>>
>>381615282
That's what I said. Mutants don't fight each other because of the Unity.
>>

>>

>>381615282
They could be like some species in that the aging process is rapid. Again, we just don't have the data. There's also the fact that most Mutants have the intelligence of a damp rag.

At least Fallout 1 and 2 allow you to have conversations like these, and allow you to realistically join the antagonist, unlike Fallout 3's glorious Villains, John Henry Edenbot, and Colonel Autumn, two characters who were less intelligently written than the Supermutants of that game

>>
>>381615497
She's crazy but she still let them walk away. Humans would have been dead
>>
>>381615497
This. Because the Nightkin see themselves as the superior race among the Mutants, shit would've eventually ended in war anyway. The Master's plan would be fundamentally flawed even if the Mutants weren't sterile.
>>
Fallout 1 and 2 are incredible RPGs. They have many problems but those are ultimately outwieghted by what the games do right.
I think Fallout 2 is the superior game though because the first game simply has too little content, while the second feels like a full-fledged RPG.

As for your problem with RNG, OP, even the manual itself states multiple times that you should save all the time, and that you should savescum.
Your weapon skill % is your base chance to hit %, so dump points in that to increase your chance to hit.
I would also advise that you avoid doing anything that involves combat until you gain a few levels at the beginning.
>>
>>381616096
A 10% of a full human life expectancy is much less than we've seen mutants age in the series, though. Lily had lived out most of her life when she was turned and still over 100 years later she's as efficient in battle as any other super mutant.

Nightkin saw themselves as superior because the Master had them in higher regard for their deadliness in combat. They valued the Master's opinions greatly, and if he ordered them to stand down on a war they'd obey without complains. Besides, after all humanity is converted specialized military units would be a thing of the past.

This describes every RPG ever. The whole point is that you're making a character, not a walkthrough machine. Gifted obviously exists as a crutch for a kind of people who get stuck in Temple of Trials
>>
>>381616428
There's no way to tell if they're completely immortal since the bombs only dropped 200 years before. By human standards they're basically immortal but get shot on sight by groups like the NCR and BoS so they usually die earlier.

Not taking gifted is not gimping yourself. Gifted is practically cheating in a system where it's about perks with negative sides.

I don't see how it's that big of a deal? Crits go both ways so it's not like some cheap npc tactic. If anything the most effective builds consist of abusing the criticals by aiming for the eye. I can totally get why it can be irritating since they are random and can largely turn the tide of a battle but that's exactly the point of critical hits. You can make criticals worthless how they are in Skyrim but in that case why even have them at all?

Tabitha had delusions of grandeur and did not tell Marcus to fuck off. Was a little insubordinate towards Marcus and clearly rallying the Gen 2 mutants around her, so Marcus decided to pick up with all the Gen 1s and a few Gen 2s, plus a couple of nightkin, and buggered off to make Jacobstown because he certainly wasn't up for mutie-on-mutie violence.

Dude just wants to live in peace. Tabitha was far too unhinged to let that dream come true, so he left.

you need to be like level 20 to spawn 13+ raiders

by that time you can just play a "how many raiders can I explode with one minigun burst" minigame

pro-tip abuse the shit out of the steal skill, your game loop should look like this:

>Save
>>Steal
if steal succeeds
>>>Save again.
if steal fails
>>>Load.
repeat.
>>
>>381624273
>Picks a fight with 13 people
>expects to win
bruh you're way too spoiled, these games trusted you to know when to fight and when to run like a bitch.

I'm surprised with the amount of shit you can find for free in 2. Only stole the Duntons' spiked knuckles, but there's rooms full of barter fodder like the Buckner's gecko room. It's nice for the extra EXP, keeping Metzger's boys from sharing a round of psycho, and grabbing Bozars at NCR but I'm going to try and do this run with minimal thievery, just to tone down on the savescumming and a change of pace.

>play fallout 1 again
>have played it in the past but gave up part of the way through about 10 times now, so i know how to build a cheesy character
>by level 5 i have 95% of hitting the eyes of almost everything at close range
>25000 caps by level 6
>beat the quest at the boneyard to kill the regulators
>suddenly FUCKING EVERYTHING starts glitching out
>dogmeat wont move, dialogue starts skipping around and is presented in the wrong order, game flat out crashes at certain sections no matter what i do
>decide to install the latest version of Fallout Fixt, but my save games are incompatible and still bugged
>10 hours of progress just thrown into the trash

What the fuck man, I don't even feel like playing the damn game anymore. I was already playing with an older version of Fallout Fixt too, this shouldn't have happened.

Is this a common occurrence? Seems funny that everyone is complaining about randomly dying to a crit during combat, I guess you can randomly lose all your progress in the game for no reason too. You die in the game, you die in real life.

It's a DnD thing. All those first RPGs were pretty much digital board games and after some time everything was dumb down for normies.

He was in fallout tactics you sperg. Whether you like Bethesda or not, Vault boy is actually a good choice for a mascot that matches the atmosphere of the game, is visually pleasing, and culturally iconic.

>I always hear people say you have so much freedom but you really dont and pretty much have to play the game a certain way with a specific build.

Of course there's always going to be an optimal build in an RPG you retard. That doesn't mean others build don't work, you're just going to have a harder time, which is realistic since you can't expect to hit something when you've dumped everything into INT and CHA. More wacky characters should be kept for second playthroughs when you know the game better and actually know what you're doing.

I thought you needed certain builds too but then some anon managed to go from start to finish with a 1 AGI build simply so that he can have threads where everyone can see his shitty build, tell him of course his build is why he's getting shat on, followed by him complaining that "What kind of great RPG doesn't let you use every kind of build possible?" which led him to inadvertently proving Fallout 2 as one of those great RPGs.
