They're great fun in groups. They don't have a lot of weapons they can effectively defend themselves with, but they shine in parties with their air strikes and vehicles.
Also Wing Divers and Fencers get pretty damn terrifying. Wing Divers get some pretty great energy weapons and fencers can become kiting/herding machines with the javalin catapult/reflector.

Nah you can just jump online. Though I would suggest you only start with Normal level matches unless you know what you are doing. You just wont have the armor.

After playing EDF for the first time when 4.1 came out on PC, I'm half surprised that nobody else has tried to do a similar thing with a bigger budget

Higher difficulty unlocks weapon limit but you'll probably die without the armor (unless you're opdiver).

With fencer you'd really want to get as much armor as you can since they take the biggest beatings but also allowing you to superarmor through shit with specific weapons. You will also need to learn how to shield cancel boost or by using the easier alternative, the javelin cannon boost, to actually play the class. Find a vulcan hammer and master it and you'll be invincible to everything but air.

Only thing I disliked about the game is how some weapon types are completely useless on the later stage of hardest difficulties. Times that by 10 for the DLC stages.

That's the thing even, they may work best in chokepoints like underground tunnels but for example something that will totally outclass that is Blasthole Spear + Tower Shield.
Upsides to that over Miniguns is, you pierce which is fantastic in chokepoints (and generally everywhere due to how the AI works) you may not be moving anywhere but you are at least protected from the front and if it comes to you can dash the hell out of the way if needed.

Alright /v/, I need help figuring out the strat for 97 Inferno. We've managed to do an Inferno only run all the way to 97, but this shit is way too much. Highest hp we have is a ranger with 4k hp. We've managed to beat every mission with some flavor of balamb tanking or fencer kiting or rule of god cheese or gungir focus fire, but holy fuck this mission.

Air Raiders can be hella fun. I mean, you have one weapon slot dedicated to vehicles, that can be a tank, mecha, helicopter or a Jaeger. Your direct fire weapons are stickybomb launchers or a literal razor floss shotgun. And that doesn't include all the airstrkes and arty barrages you can call.

They're not as intuitive as Ranger or Wing Diver, but they're fun.

Air raiders are solid solo as well if you push past the poor early weapon options, my AR m8 had an easier time with ambush tunnel missions than I did as a fencer just due to turrets and forcefields

That launcher is a safe bet but only as long as you have the attention off you. When the civilians go and there's nothing between you and the ayys, it's time to juke and jive with a melee weapon

For the melee weapon it's best to discount the jackhammer (short range for the level) and the second attack of the spear (too long an animation), that leaves you with the non-piercing spear variants with a decent range. You could go shield instead of javelin launcher but you're better going full FAST than bothering to deflect things when they're coming from every angle

Does anyone else make up a backstory for why they wear the colors they wear like me? I like to wear the colors of fruit and vegetables; currently I am donning the Tomato Knight for the fencer. I hope in EDF5 we will be able to summon NPCS like we could summon a vechile or airstrike and it would be nice if my own unit could wear my colors or I could change certain parts of my armor to reflect I am the commander just like the NPCS commanders wear a red part.

My Fencer is dressed like a character from Overlord, my Ranger is dressed like a Squad leader, my Wing Diver is a hot pink because "Follow my ass as if you can have it" and I didn't really doll up my Air Raider.

But if I'm not wrong, part of the theme of EDF5 is that since it's First Contact all over again, they're recruiting civvies into the EDF and they're going to emphasise that by having things like Fencers in construction wear and so on.
