I've been on the fence about Witcher III. It's on sale (goes on sale a lot actually) and I have heard that the combat is still shit.

I played Witcher I for a couple hours and was totally put off by the combat, I just couldn't swallow it. I'll end up youtubing the cutscenes like most people have. I have Witcher II but haven't played it yet, if I do grab III i'll be sure to play II first.

Is the gameplay and combat etc really as shitty as people say it is on III? I Figured they would've fixed it by the third installment?

Witcher 1 had great gameplay, considering what Aurora Engine could achieve. They squeezed everything they could out of it.
It had perfect balance of preparation, alchemy etc. You could prepare yourself before the fight, put oils on and drink potions, and you could do same during combat, but it had animation so you put yourself in danger.

It just needed some polishing.

Witcher 2 was just way too ambitious. They wanted to make huge game when they almost went broke then because of failed Witcher 1 console port. It was heavily consolized and cut, and whole gameplay is just a shadow of what it was supposed to be. The potion and Witcher roleplay is nonexistent. I never wanted to do contracts in W2 etc. Preparation takes just way too long and always long ass animation.

W3 is where all the "open world" meme and casualization happened. Fight is just button mashing and spamming potions and food, since there is no animation. Game was also cut, and there are articles that say about great part of gameplay mechanics being removed. Like, they had a system that was a mix of VATS and that slow-mo slashing from Metal Gear Rising, where you had to aim and proper parts of a monster to trigger additional effects. Damaging Griffin's wings would prevent it from flying during the fight, attacking both hearts of certain vampires guaranteed instakill etc.

However W3 was scrapped half in the development. Consoles were too weak for graphics and all went to shit. They had to make game from scratch in 2 years, even less probably. It was a total miracle that Witcher 3 happened. They even planned to release game in two parts instead (which IMO would be better option) but decided they wanted a full title instead.

CD Projekt RED are capable of making great gameplay, however development of their games is one of the most painful things i've witnessed in gaming industry. I really hope they will get their shit together for Cyberpunk.

You know this is funny because the other day at about 70 hours in I realized that this is the exact tactic I'd been using for every single enemy in the game so far. They all do the same thing, you hit them twice or so, they back step, and then they'll counter attack. Often times you don't even have to move and their counter attack will miss you, because they designed the enemy attack patterns around dealing with people mashing light attack the entire game.

Honestly at this point the combat would be better if the enemies just died in one hit so you could get it over with.

They don't have competent designers. This should be evident, I don't get how you can't figure this out on your own.

The better question would be why they didn't hire better designers even after 2 games worth of feedback going their way about how their mechanics are dogshit. No one with experience and talent was available? The garbage lead designers they have are good friends with the management? Are they trying to keep these positions strictly for polish people and there isn't any talent to be found there?

Yup, because it's "just a game" nobody actually studies the mechanics of the game they play. Checkers has far more depth than witcher 3 but people only look at games on an extremely surface level, which is why witcher 3 gets all these goty awards. It's the definition of artificial fun.
