>As each new mechanic is introduced through gameplay, a little bit of text appears in the corner of the screen for a short while with the name of the mechanic and a reference number

Maybe I'm in the minority but I actually enjoyed that game for what it was. Yes the environments were bland and there were no OCs but they got Bowser's personality right, the paper versions of the characters were hilarious. Gameplay was solid and Paper Mario was just charming.
