Yeah they're just making it up as they go along. Just like every other 2DEEP4U series. It just so happened that nothing in the game contradicted them so they decided to adopt a fan theory into canon.

That was around the time the Kirby anime, the F-Zero anime and the Animal Crossing movie got made.
Then again, we did have the Pikmin and Kid Icarus shorts since then, now that I think about it.
